Didn't mean to make the DT reference above....I have played bass for some
time now and I began to play on a fretless two years ago. I find it much
more pleasing. I am not a fan of lines in the fretboard. I guess since
my first was without lines I am quite partial. I think the lines get in
the way and slow down my playing. That's my 2 cents. Thanks guys.

Agreed. But the only appreciation I ever had for Schoenberg was when I
analyzed his stuff and discovered all of the nice mathematical
relationships in there. When I listened to it (as an example,
"Variations for Orchestra") I didn't get a feeling of musical
satisfaction that I get from Stravinsky and his ilk :)

Maybe there's a clue there as to why many people seem to dislike "Anna
Lee." They prefer dissonance to consonance. While the Baroque composers
aren't my favorites, they did achieve perfection within the confines of
what they were "allowed" to do. Mozart - he breathed new life into the
Italian opera scene, which had become just as stale and formulaic as
country music (or is it "Rural Contemporary"?) has become today, and
that's just one aspect of his enormous output during his short life.

I'll admit, I didn't have much of an appreciation for Mozart, Bach,
etc., before I studied music history for a year under Howard Goldstein
here at Auburn. Now, though, he and Beethoven rank right up there with
Stravinsky, Ravel, Mussorgsky, and R. Strauss in my mind.

The composer that, to me, was farthest ahead of his time, though, was
Carlo Gesualdo. He lived from 1561 to 1613, and his music contained some
vertical harmonic elements that weren't commonplace for 250 years.
Definitely worth checking out to anyone that likes their dissonance but
    doesn't like Renaissance music.

On another note, I got a tape of the 1/2/98 Hartford DT show today. When
I saw them in Atlanta, they opened the show with Lines in the Sand, but
they played it about 20 beats per minute too slowly. On this tape,
though, the tempo is full on and kicking ass. Did anyone else notice
tempo problems on the latest tour?

Take care all, and RIP Harry Caray,

Okay I have heard from a very good source that DT will be in Australia
around April/May. Apparently DT's Aussie record label Warners have
confirmed that the tour is happening, though no exact dates are

This is ALL I know at the moment, as soon as I know more you will too.

am i the only one that thinks the production/mix is absolutely horrid on this
song? the vocals are way too quiet (especially the backing vox), the bass is
non-existent... and Cherone sounds like he has the enunciation (sp?) of a

Man, that sucks -- and Harry passed away the same day the baseball
teams report to spring training camp full-squad. *sigh*

Harry's son Skip is a longtime announcer for the Braves here, and
-his- son, Harry's grandson, does TV announcing for the Bravos. I'm
saddened for the whole family; although not an unexpected loss, it's
still tragic. Quite talented, too; there's no question at all that
part of the Braves' success has been their outstanding announcing
    crew.

/me sings "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" -- and I'll be at a few
    Braves Games this year, too.

SPINNING YEARS is quite impressive. I've got some of the material
like DoE, already, but I'll still be listening for quite a while.
Lots to explore. Now I need better computer speakers. :)

You can influence the "mwah"-factor also by the amount of pressure excercised by your fingertips, also try experimenting using the bony top as against the more fleshy side of the fingertip.

    >The only problem is, ebony and composite fingerboards are only found in >top-of the line basses. The only cheap fretless that I've seen that had what >seemed to be an ebony fingerboard (you never know, I've *seen* rosewood >fingerboards been painted black to fool people, this is more common than >we'd think) was a Yamaha. It sounded pretty good, so that would be my choice

A good ebony fingerboard is dead black and has such a dense grain structure that you hardly are able to see it. Note that I am speaking of Gaboon Ebony (Dalbergia Melanoxylon) from Africa here. There also is Maccassar Ebony (Diospyros Celebica), also called striped ebony for obvious reasons ;-), from Oceania and South East Asia, which also is an excellent choice.

    >if I was on a budget (here in Tampa, FL it was costing less than 300 bux). >Another good option could be a Carvin - you can order a bolt-on 4-string >fretless for 469 dollars, and a neck-thru fretless for 579 dollars (in the >US). Plus, all those nice options they have sure would make >my price tab go up a bit.

Carvin also has a few showrooms...

BTW, I have to add to my last post that in the meantime they use different standard woods (alder instead of poplar, but you also can have mahogany or koa -- the blossoming tonal characteristics of which probably is a nice choice for a fretless :-) not to speak of its gorgeous look... :-)) and a massive Hipshot bridge instead of the lighter Wilkinson.

    >As for Yamaha, I do think that since they opened up their so-called >"state-of-the-art facility" in Taiwan, they've been putting out some really >good stuff, including some guitars that you buy for under 300 bux and sound >as good or better than some 1000 dollar american-made guitars. > >Oh, check out Dean basses too. I've played some here at a music store and >they're cheap (around 300-400 dollars) and sound and play NICE. The fretless >had a rosewood fingerboard but I liked it anyway.

Rosewood can be an excellent choice b/c of its less linear freqency response -- if this is what you like. If you go w/ Pau Ferro you also have less of the rosewood-typical treble roll-off.

I received an extortion threat from the following person:

mookie222@writeme.com (that's right, the pussy hides behind an anon e-mail address)

    9912 E. Magnolia Mesa, AZ 85206

He/she/it basically demanded free copies of everything I've ever made, or they will contact the authorities, including making sure the authorities found out all the names and addresses of my customers (though I already take steps to prevent this) and made it clear that the extortion threat applied to anything I make from now on in. Furthermore, it demanded a "public apology" on the Jam for my having delays in shipments. Basically they're just jerking off here, but it shows you the character of this joker.

I'm likely to pay it a personal visit in the near future, since I have extensive maps of the City of Mesa and I know EXACTLY where this dwelling is (locals: take US 60 east and exit at Crismon Road -this is way out east, east of Power Rd even- and take a left, so that you're heading north. Go north past Southern, Broadway, Main/Apache Trail, and University, and make a left on Magnolia. If you hit Adobe or Brown, you've gone too far. Crismon Rd itself is 10000 East, so 9912 east isn't too far down the road. It ain't the better part of town.)

I'm not condoning illegal retribution, but anything that might happen to this guy as a result of loyalty from my friends here on the Jam, be it a harmless emailbombing or something more inconvenient, would just be a wonderful exercise in poetic justice.

The authorities are already involved in the matter, especially since two members of Prism/Crystalline happen to be Mesa police motor officers. Ah, nepotism. :) And just so this moron knows, I DO have video surveillance on my dwelling 24/7 (always have, paranoia dont ya know) so steer clear of anything below the belt.

I might let Olaf get away with his demands, since he's in Germany and I don't want an international problem, but make no mistake, this sort of thing will NOT go unpunished, and I welcome any help to see to it that this principle is enforced in full.

My suspicion is that this is a kid. Should that suspicion be founded, my 17-year-old brother in law (Joey, the bodybuilder) will be called upon to set affairs right.

I just realised that a comment I made before was slightly incorrect. I said that the intro and ending riff of LFAGA (WDADU) was very similar to a riff in LTL. I've just found that it's even more similar to the end of Scarred (Awake). I think the LFAGA riff has the same time signature as the LTL riff and starts on the same chord, but progresses through sounding much more like the Scarred ending. Just a thought anyway.

As for the fretless issue, I've got a great idea - make a fretless electric by ripping the frets off an autographed JPM100... ;-)

    Hi!

More about the festival "Le Printemps de Bourges" which will take place april 15th to 19th in Bourges, France, 150 km south of Paris: It's a music festival which takes place every year and consists of a lot of concerts and events in different halls (the biggest ones hold 6500, 3600 and 2400 people), last year there were more than 80,000 visitors! The concert of interest for us (besides the big Techno night, of course) is on friday the 27th and features the following bands:

Royal Hunt Vanden Plas Angra Dream Theater

    Not bad, don't you think? :-) :-) :-)

Probably/hopefully I'll be there, and maybe I'll also be at the concert of The Gathering in Paris one day later and the DT show one day before in Strasbourg. :-)

The official schedule of the festival will be announced on march 10th, so then we will know more about the exact location, tickets etc...

Anybody else planning to attend the festival?

    Take care,
