That's another reason ebony and composites are better :-) try putting a lot
of pressure on rosewood and, over time, the wood will give. I'm sure you
know that, I'm just commenting for whoever else might be interested :-)

How do you compare the Hipshot with the 2-Tek? Do you think it's worth the
extra 150 bux they ask to have the 2-Tek installed?

I was thinking about getting a Carvin neck-through alder bass (all-alder)
and a fretless ebony fingerboard. Do you have any idea what that would sound
like? :-) I think it still should have enough hi-end because of the ebony.
Alder should provide nice mids and tight lows.

If anybody has bought any Carvin basses, I'd appreciate some input on what
woods were selected and what they sound like...

    Christian.

Brain Salad Surgery is definitely the best ELP album. Next in quality is
Tarkus, the title track which is quite good. Some other songs on there as
well, along with the standard ELP filler-material. After that, the quality
drops off quite sharply, but if you want to try more I'd go with ELP,
Trilogy, and/or Pictures at an Exhibition.

BSS is probably the best album overall. However, if you really like it
(particlarly Karn Evil 9), then I recommend a few of their albums in the
    following order:
    1) Pictures at an Exhibition--a very good live recording of a 33min
rendition of Mussorgsky's classical piece (as arranged and adapted by
ELP--they added some music, and some lyrics). Kick ass stuff.
    2) Trilogy--which includes the amAZing title track, the equally kick ass
instrumental "Hoedown" (by Aaron Copland, which you will most likely
    recongnize) and "The Endless Enigma".
    3) Tarkus--which includes the kick-ass 20min title track and a few other
    good tunes.
    4) <self-titled ELP>--which has two great full-band instrumentals, the
ballad "Lucky Man" (like "Still...", or "From the Beginning" on Trilogy),
and another classical adaptation called "Knife Edge" (very good), the 12min
"Take a Pebble", and Emerson organ & piano instrumental (kinda like KE9 2nd
    Impression).

It's a toss up: I'd say (1) and (2) are on a par, and the same with (3) and
(4). You can find this stuff remastered on Rhino records for (usually)
not-too-much money. ELP's other stuff (Works, Love Beach, etc) aren't really
worth owning. All the best tracks can be found on the ELP boxed set, but I
found the new studio version of Pictures to be inferior (not to mention
shorter) to the original, and a couple worthwhile songs ARE missing,
although you do get the two good tracks from Works 1, "Pirates" and "Fanfare
    for the Common Man", but...

You bought one of their best albums in Brain salad Surgery, try Tarkus trilogy, or ELP or Pictures at an Exhibition next. If you want a live album, try Welcome back my friends ... Other than that, you could try the box set.

    from bernardo: >Mike Ines-bass guitar

i know mike inez has worked with ozzy before, but does this mean that alice in chains is definitely done for? i mean, he was the new bassist in AiC, so i take this to mean that they are not writing & recording, nor do they have plans to in the foreseeable future. anyone else know anything more concrete?

well, if you didn't like the vocals in LiTS, then avoid this disc (though i like it quite a bit). this is the only one where doug handles all of the lead vox, so that soulful powerful voice is pretty much everywhere on this one.

from trevor: >Believe it or not, I had never heard any ELP until today when I came >accross Brain Salad Surgery at the used shop. I gave it a spin and

everytime ELP comes up, i will make it a point to say that brain salad surgery, trilogy, and tarkus are three albums well worth the investment. be careful with other stuff--i would say that love beach (i think that's the name) has got to be one of the worst albums ever by a band that once was great.

    Hey,

Two items of good news. First, Nicole and I just received our Xmas CD. Yeah, I was one of those who sent my check to the NYC address last November. The CD and all the fanclub stuff is pretty cool. Oh, and I don't think I've seen it conjectured here, but I think the two non-DT members in the studio picture are Doug Pinnick (shaved his mohawk!) and Kevin Shirley.

Second, a track off of FII is finally getting airplay in Houston, TX! KACC (Alvin Community College radio) 89.7 FM is playing You Not Me. I've heard it on there several times in the past two weeks. This is the first time any song off of FII has been played by any Houston area station. The major rock outlet in town completely ignores DT. Anyway, I'm gonna be requesting YNM at this college station to hopefully get it into regular rotation. In case anyone else local wants to request them too, their number is 281-388-4772.

2 - TAB of When Dream and Day Unite (less the song The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun) These is a Japanese Tab book with Drums, Bass, Guitar, Keyboard, and vocal melody transcribed. In a word - complete. Now you only have to worry if the drummer can read music, as opposed to figure out these songs. I also have TAB of IAW (less Learning to Live) and Awake (less The Mirror) in the same complete band format. I don't know why the Japanese versions always manage to leave out one song, but I would rather tell you upfront than have you set up a trade for one of these and find out the only song you really cared about was Learning to Live and it isn't included. But - I've never seen another Tab book this complete.

    Hey Gang -

Well, I received a couple of replies requesting that I transcribed the write- up that Columbia House did up for the Metal Selection of the Month, FII. Here y'all go:

Virtuosity is nothing to be embarassed by. Even though the rise of grunge and alternative put the spotlight back on feeling and attitude, nothing can beat an instrument well-played. In the '70s bands like Yes and Rush funneled furious chops into a powerful vision that still stands up today. Dream Theater carries that torch, making epic, progressive metal with more hooks than a coatroom and some of the most impressive physical dexterity you'll ever hear.

This is a band that knows how to be surgically accurate yet rock like a hurricane. James LaBrie's vocals find a middle ground between the growl of current heroes like Alice In Chains' Layne Staley and the melodic punch of Steve Perry of Journey. And John Petrucci is one of the few guitarists able to deliver big, heavy riffs and spidery, complicated solos in equal measures. If you're an aspiring player, he'll keep you up at night wondering "How'd he do that?"

Dream Theater's latest masterwork, "Falling Into Infinity", continues in the experimental vein of their earlier releases, marrying pop impact - check out "You Not Me" - to mammoth, multi-part arrangements that hold the attention and demand repeat listening. Producer Kevin Shirley (Silverchair, Aerosmith) has added some sonic heft without diluting the Dream Theater script - make it big, loud and perfect.

Despite all you've read and heard, large-scale rock and roll is far from dead. You'll find it living, breathing and spitting fire inside a darkened Dream Theater.

Well, there it is. I hope at least some of you have enjoyed it. Pretty kick- ass review from a "mainstream" organization, eh?

    Oh yeah, Mike Bahr wrote:

    > This leads me to believe these people have done this before (to other > companies perhaps... so Ryan and John of Scarred and Xanadu records, be > careful!!), and I may just have to let the authorities deal with it. He

I dunno. Go to Mosh's page. There're some there. That's where I was finally able to see what Speak to Me and Cover My Eyes were like. I love Speak to Me. Kinda makes me wish I'd bought the Japanese version. (sigh) Go figure they don't put it out as a B-Side. Hopefully that might come later. Cover My Eyes was heavier than I thought, which is fine by me. I like the lyrics. :)

FG's not too full of everything like PAW is. The tab for Alien Water Kiss is very interesting. heheh. But the keyboard parts for Fire Garden Suite are a nice addition. :) Does your guitarist do this?
