    Ah. Another flecktones convert. i've been a fan of the tones for a couple of years now, and i have to say that they are incredible musicians. Vic's pretty well-known in bass circles, for obvious reasons. i believe that when it comes to playing, he's on another level. The albums, including his solo work, tell part of the story, but seeing him live is something altogether different. i've seen him solo twice and with the tones about 8 times, and he never ceases to amaze. Bela's a banjo god, and the tones' mixture of jazzgrass, funk, blues, and whatever has really made traditional bluegrass more accessible. The sax/horn player was Jeff Coffin, who's been touring with them for about a year. He's a monster. And don't forget about Future Man, no doubt the most underrated Flecktone but just as vital as the rest of them. Whom else do you know who playes a Synthaxe Drumitar? Bela and the tones have played and recorded with some of the best traditional bluegrass and modern musicians out there, including Tony Trischka, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Tony Rice, David Grisman, Sam Bush, Chick Corea, Hornsby, and probably dozens of others i don't know about. Many musicians on this list are probably familiar with the Flecktones. Anyone who isn't should really check them out. They're not prog (they're not even rock), but they're amazing nonetheless. Their chops, musicality, and improvisational ability will make you sit up straight and believe it. And, they're coming to Johns Hopkins tomorrow night!!

    Well, Carvin has it available as an option and they don't say it's not available for 6-strings, so I guess there IS a 6-string version out there.

    I personally think that too much maple ruins the sound a little. Maple might be fine for neck-thru 4s and small 5s, but on a large 6-string like the Carvin it sounds "boring" as you put it. Same thing with the Yamaha 6-string neck-thrus I played (and a store here in Tampa had 2 of those used!!!). The sound tends to be a little too "plastic" rather than organic - maple just isn't a resonating wood. But on the other hand, it's hard to spend a grand just to be the guinea pig and the first to try one of those alder basses :P I have no idea what they'll sound like, but I'm SO curious :-)

    I think some basses and amp configurations are meant to be played with a pick. I don't use a pick and I'm an ex-guitar player, but I think it's a very personal choice. I sure don't think Chris Squire is any less of a bass player because he uses a pick often.

    i was reading on "under a cyber moon" (the official DT website, as far as i'm concerned) how magical the songwriting chemistry was between jordan rudess, john p, and mike. i also recollect how rudess toured with DT briefly following kevin's departure, and how he was considered as a replacement before (from what i gather, anyway) he elected to work with the dixie dregs. now, as i said in the subject, this is purely speculative, but i wonder if there was any hint of regret on JP or MP's part, seeing how incredible rudess worked with them on the songwriting process. i mean, they already experienced how incredible he is live, both playing with them and later opening for them with the rudess/morgenstein project, so this was the final dimension of experiencing what it would be like to work with him as a bandmate.

    i call this pure speculation, because derek truly is brilliant, and a truly special player. where kevin had a more classical approach, derek's is, as has been frequently discussed, more jazz-oriented. jordan's style, in this repect, is much closer to kevin's. having worked with derek on DT's jazziest effort to date (FII), and now working with rudess, it makes me wonder if maybe the guys have some slight regrets about working with derek, as opposed to another player who would write more in kevin's style.

    again, speculation. i know that every interview supports everyone's happiness with derek, and i know that what i'm talking about exists only in the heads of JP and MP. still, it does make me curious.

    I just talked to Sean Malone, and what he told me is that he uses regular nickel roundwounds for his fretless (DR for those interested). What he did though, was that he had a luthier put on a coating on top of his fingerboard for protection. He has an ebony fingerboard and polyester was used - for rosewood, polyurethane should be used (just because one material sticks better than the other). The result did affect the sound, however - it took away from the "wood" sound and made it sound a bit more like a synthetic neck. It added brightness to the sound, which in Sean's case was exactly what he wanted, and he's got, in my oppinion, one of the best fretless sounds out there, so I think it worked :-) It still retained some of the wood character, however, which is also cool. Plus, wood necks can be adjusted, so I do think that this is the best of both worlds.

    Concerning this issue: I downloaded some Empty Tremor songs on the Prog or Die site, and it took just a few minutes because the archives were zipped. Now, i dont know if this affects the sound quality (the samples sound good anyway), but i think that the other sites that offer mp3 s should (if they can) zip the songs. I mean, the LiTS demo is like 7.2 Megs, and the download time is like an hour minimum, it would be cool if songs this long were zipped, so you could download the in just 3 minutes or so. Anyway, this is just a suggestion.....
