i couldnt agree more with everything you said. kev used to be my favorite DT
member, and when i heard he left i was devestated. i couldnt imagine someone
actually replacing him. then i saw the awake tour, i was like, this guy wont
be able to play 6:00, but he did, and his own keyboard solos amazed me, i
loved the jazz influence, and by the end of the show, i was hoping they were
gonna keep him. and so they did. i believe that derek adds more groove to the
music, and just brought DT to the next level of their musical talents. and i
tell you, both times i saw the FII tour, and he opened the show with LITS i
freaked, it was the best i ever thought DT sounded. i've been a fan since
early I&W, and i never thoght i would like DT any better than I&W but now FII
is my favorite. i dont think its really that much less progressive either, i
just think its less of a guitar album.
welp, thats my thoughts

Well, I'm really missing all those 13465610983409603254842457 messages a day that I used to get from this list. So, I think that I'll try to contribute to it with some polemical posts. :-)
This first one won't be polemical, but hey, you won't loose anything for waiting. :-)
A question: what does the band Univers Zero sound like?? I tried very hard to find some MP3 files of their songs and couldn't really find *anything*. I heard that they are "symphonic progressive rock" and I must say that this intriguing description got my attention...
On the topic of CDs recommendations, I'd like to thank everybody who helped me with Camel and Renaissance CDs. I'll be buying some CDs by these bands and after they arrive, I'll send reviews to the list.
I heard the first 3 songs from King Crimson's "Red" album and didn't really like what I heard: way too heavy, I think (but maybe I didn't give the songs enough spins to get into it?). I always heard that they are one of the most influential bands from the progressive scene and I'm curious.

Jam,
I just got Stratobarius' Visions. I really like this band! It uses unbelieveable vocal chords which I just love (and wish James LB would do more of!). If anyone has any reviews on their other 4 albums, please post or e-mail... Some very cool stuff....
PS. OH, I also got my X-mas CD. What a really great gift! I love listening to how the music progressed, (and Mike and Derek are so funny!!!!!!)

Anyone interested in an original DT boot "Lords of Sound"?? This is an original Kiss the Stone boot (KTS 282/283) not a replica or CD-R. These are getting harder to find.
This is a 2cd boot of a Milwaukee gig on the Images and Words Tour from '93. Track listing is as follows: cd1 cd2 Metropolis pt.1 To Live Forever/Drum Solo Under a Glass Moon Status Seeker A Fortune in Lies Another Day Wait for Sleep Pull Me Under Surrounded Eve Take the Time Learning to Live
I'm going to offer this one up for bids until March 2nd. Minimum bid is $50.00
Drop me a note if you are interested. Thanks.

Tyhis would bring up an interesting point. Is there any recording of Dream theater and Jordan Rudess? Those first couple awake shows? In order to truly settle this, we need to hear something concrete of how Rudess managed the existing material at the time.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but I have this CD (the original 2CD set, from KTS). It is good, but not worth more than $50 (it lacks treble and, IMO, this is the 2nd worst problem a recording can have).
> Glenn
I'm sorry, but I wouldn't like to see 'jammers pay more than $25 for each disc of this 2CD set.

That was a very interesting show, too. It was just a 45 minute set at a festival at the LA Forum in mid '94 (09/09/94). On the tape I have of it most of the songs are played significantly faster than normal. Voices and TTT, in particular, seem quite fast. It isn't the tape, either, as James' voice and all instruments are in proper tune. I find that kinda strange - wouldn't a keyboardist that doesn't have as much experience w/ the tunes prefer a bit slower tempo? Or at least the normal tempo of the song? Regardless, he was as good as anyone playing those songs. Very impressive for a one night stand...

I sincerely apologize, but I've had to withdraw the offer of the Chicago '97 DT show from my availability list. Well, seeing as how you guys used the German translator on the Mirror page, I used the Blonde translator on the John Myung interview. Here's parts of what it came up with.
MB: Talking like, you know, about word of mouth, there’s been a lot of bands that totally have come out over the years that totally have tried to copy what you are doing, and almost ride on your coat tails, but they’ve never been able to capture the type of following that you have. What is totally it that you feel sets Dream Theater apart from everyone else? Like, I am so sure! What do you think makes shoppers so loyal to you?
OH MY GOD! Tad asked me out!!! I was like so nervous that I spilled my New Coke all over the place. I am so sure! I must have looked like a total nerd! Like, the music that like we create it’s… you know, when I’m playing up on stage, I look over and I see Derek, I see John, I see Stud Puppy , and it’s like I feel a certain magic happening when like we all come together and create and play music. It’s one of the greatest experiences to have. To totally have that chemistry Anyway... So I think it’s the chemistry of who like we are as shoppers creating the music. Like, gag me with a spoon! And that’s ultimately what comes out in the sound and the music. Like, gag me with a spoon! And it’s all like, you know, about the music, right? Like, I am so sure! It’s all like, you know, about shoppers listening. Listening and liking what they hear and then going out and pursuing it further. Buying the album, and getting to know it, and listening to it, and living with it Anyway... So I think it’s the chemistry that we have as players together with each other. It’s synergistic, you know Like, the sum is totally greater than the parts. Like, duh! You get into a situation where one plus one equals three, and not one point five Like, when like we get together, it’s a real bitchin' chemistry. Like, I totally just remembered, I have go to the mall later because me and Lisa and Heather and Heather's sister Sherry (who is such a total drag), we're like gonna go shopping, you know?
MB: What do you think is totally probably the most popular misconception that shoppers totally have like, you know, about Dream Theater?
Like, I'm sure! Can you believe that Lisa actually thinks that she can date Kevin?!? She like called up last night and asked what I thought he would like think of her. Yeah, right, like you can tell a friend that he think she's a totally slag or something.
Just go to http://www.80s.com/Entertainment/ValleyURL/ to use the translator. heheh. This rules. --KorgX3

It is a crime, in theory to offer an exact transcription of someone's music, without their permission, but since the transcription simply CAN'T be exact in tablature, and since it's not for sale, it would be difficult to prosecute, if there are legal grounds from which to do so. Further, if you offer a tab as "Your own interpretation of Song X" I think that may also afford you a loophole. It may depend on how precise the transcription is, though. As far as point #4, if that's illegal, then the MLA is offering a university endorsed book of how to commit a crime. You can quote any text, anywhere, and at any time, provided you site your sources.
