The Artist Formerly Known as Bafu Vai wished:
    > I can only hope to one day look like such a dangerous badass.
Well you can start by growing out your hair.
    >Has anyone on this list ever seen him live?
Yes. Years ago. I was up front and couldn't hear the vocals at all,
but that's not exactly what you go to an Yngwie show for.
The dude had like 1,000 picks all over, stuck all down the mike stand
and in the cracks in the amps. Every five minutes a roadie would come
tape more on the mic stand. Funny, though I didn't get one. The guy in
    front
of me got like 10 and couldn't part with one. Bastard.

    >Hey! That radio guy already has LTE! What the crap?! I'll
    roshambo you for it!!
"So I kicked him squarely in the nuts and he cried like Nancy Kerrigan."

    >Question of the day: Does Dr. Mosh ever post anything
    positive or remotely
happy to anyone? Does he just need a beanie baby and
    a hug?
He's a real nice guy in person.

Yeah, I saw him about a year ago. He is definitely getting bigger and bigger. Or is it heavier and heavier. No that's Pantera. I never miss Yngwie live. He is still an amazing performer. I don't care if he cuts his hair and looks like Rush Limbaugh on the next tour. You think he is fast on album. He fucking shreds beyond shreds live! And is all very tasteful (I'm sure others were argue, but here's a big fucking I don't care what you think in advance). I didn't care too much for Facing the Animal. I liked Seventh Sign the most of his recent albums. But like I said, I don't care what he looks like. I am a fan of music. And as far as Mike dying his hair and La Brie cutting his, thanks for the info. I like to keep informed. But I sure ain't gonna lose respect for them because of what they decide to do in their personal life. I've been known to dye my hair quite frequently, and I cut my ass length hair about 2 years ago. I miss the attentions from females because of it, but that's it. It doesn't mute my guitar strings when I lean forward. It doesn't get in my eyes. It isn't wet all day after I take a shower. Short hair is great. True long hair looks cooler, but other than that it sucks!

Okay, back on real issues. I would like to thank all the jammers out their that constantly talk about prog bands and where samples are on the web. Keep it going. I don't know where to begin on my CD orders. Spock's Beard and Superior are clearly my two new favorites. Spock's Beard kind of reminds me of Genesis a la Dancing on a Volcano! I love that song. Keep up the discussions. They are very helpful to observe.

    Bafu asked:

    >...such a dangerous badass. Love the shadows on the scalloped neck. > But I swearthe cover photo was compressed to make him look thinner. > Has anyone on this list ever seen him live?

I saw him a the Marquee (as in LATM) in London in 1994 ( now a trendy bar, incidentally) and he definately wasn't on the Slimfast Plan if you catch my drift.

It was quite good, and he surprised be with some extremely tasteful soloing that was much more emotional that the standard Yngwie solo that just goes up and down.

Mind you, I'm not a Malmsteen expert, so I may be either not doing him enough credit, or giving him too much, who knows?

He burned a guitar, and smashed it up at the end of the show, and there was a huge fight over it. In the confusion I ended up with half the neck.

    Well that's my Yngwie story,

from rocky: >is my favorite. i dont think its really that much less progressive either, i >just think its less of a guitar album.

i would say that it's less progressive overall than anything else they've done, but i'd agree that it's also much less a guitar album than their other albums. the balance on the album is probably its greatest achievement, and for me its greatest attraction.

from roger: > I heard the first 3 songs from King Crimson's "Red" album and >didn't really like what I heard: way too heavy, I think (but maybe I >didn't give the songs enough spins to get into it?). I always heard that >they are one of the most influential bands from the progressive scene and >I'm curious.

please, for your own sake, don't give up on crimson. listen to "discipline"--it's a lot less "heavy," it's not really abrasive at all, and this is probably one of the all-time instrumentally jaw-dropping albums. this era--along with "beat" and "three of a perfect pair"--is my personal fave, and i think you'll like it a lot more too, given your reaction to "red."

from damon: >In order to >truly settle this, we need to hear something concrete of how Rudess >managed the existing material at the time.

well, from what i understand, he actually sight-read most of the music, given the short-term notice of the gig. i still have trouble comprehending that. tough to base judgment on that either way--i saw a few gigs when derek was first in the band, and he choked more than a few times. obviously, he's much more familiar with the material now.

this is a fun debate, because we had kevin, we have derek, and hell, all three are brilliant, each in their own ways....

    Amen to that.

    >The TRB6P? Sheesh, maybe this exactly was the reason why they had two of >these... :-\ I always had been curious as I had liked a piezo bridge, too...

Actually it wasn't the TRB6P. It was the neck-thru 6-string that they've had for a while. Those basses play great, and they don't really sound bad, they just have this unorganic quality to the sound, almost like a composite. But it sure feels good in your hands. The only TRB6 JP they ever had at this store was bought by yours truly ;)

    >Maybe Sean Malone will have some inutition in this matter, too? :-) > >Which basses would he recommend otherwise?

Sean loves his Kubicki Factor, and likes Ibanez basses (the nice, hand-made ones, mind you - Like Gary Willis' :D).

As for Alder basses, he hasn't seen them either. (btw - Sean, like Gary Willis, John Patitucci, Dave La Rue, Geddy Lee and others, plays a bolt-on ;D).

I read an interview with Jordan once asked about the DT thing. He says he was approached for tours by the Dixie Dregs and DT in the same week! Consequentially, he had to learn all this material for two bands in a few days time. However, since he's such a monster sight-reader, he played at least part of the DT show while reading all the parts on stage! Concerning if he's a better match for DT than Derek...maybe, maybe not. I'm not sure he would be too happy with them. If you listen to the Rudess/Morgenstein project it's just so damn keyboard heavy, probably too much so for most DT fans. So if Jordan were in DT it would either mean Jordan would hold back or DT would become more of a keyboard type band.

I've seen him live many times. The first time I saw him was the best show I've ever seen. It was right after he left Alcatrazz. Most of us hadn't heard his solo material yet. He kicked major ass. The opening band was Talas, and this unknown bass player named Billy Sheehan also kicked major booty.

I saw Yngwie this past summer. Yes he's gained weight, and his hair's so thin you can see his shiny scalp. Next time he comes around, I'll bet he's wearing a hat or a new Marv Albert/Diamond Dave hairdo.

To the guy who just got Visions, congratulations! You just discovered one of the best bands in the world! You wanted reviews on the other 4 albums, actually it's 6 others and one coming in a coupe of weeks here goes: (short reviews)

Episode - This is definitely the next cd you should buy. A lot of people consider this to be their best, I personally vote for visions. It is faster in most parts than Visions, but just as catchy. If you liked Forever Free, and Legions you will love this album.

Fourth Dimension - This album is the first with Timo Kotipelto and takes a little more of a listen than Episode or Visions. I find about 6 strong points - Against The Wind, Galaxy, Distant Skies, We Hold The Key (Awesome!!), Twilight Symphony, and there is one other strong song which escapes me now. I definitely recommend this to any fan of Visions or Episode, even though the entire disc is not as good.

Twilight Time & - These 3 are with Timo Tolkki singing. He is very monotonic in style and not Dreamspace & exciting to listen to. The songs still have descent music but are just not as Fright Night well thought out. I don't personally care for these 3 discs but if you must have them like I did, check out TT first, then Dreamspace, then FN (If you can find it, I think it's out of print).

They also have 3 singles, Father Time, Black Diamond, and Will The Sun Rise?. WTSR is the only one I recommend because it has 6 live bonus tracks on it.

They have best of album that has no unreleased tracks and I think on March 24th their Live double cd is coming out with a new studio disc in September.

If you want to hear what Timo Tolkki's voice sounds like check out my web site, I have an MP3 of one of those songs on it. Hope that helps.
