Ah, the Ibanez EX, also known as the Driftwood Series. :) Actually, I owned one of these for a while, and the sound wasn't all that bad, and the playability was alright. The tremolo on it sucked, though. But for only $299, I wasn't going to complain.
I played an Ibanez PGM the other day, the Paul Gilbert model with the inverted headstock and the painted F-holes. I *will* own that guitar. What a sweet-playing instrument. *sigh*

Um, no, Korg. :) Batten has serious chops. Pick up her album "Above Below and Beyond" and prepare to be shocked. "Giant Steps," "Tar-Zenz Day Off," "Jazz Police," "Whammy Damage" (wow what a shredfest that one is) -- all of them are fantastic songs. She even gives the Great Kat a run for her money with a blurring rendition of "Flight of the Bumblebee."

The track I heard sounded about as much like Michael Jackson as Chris Collins sounds like a good singer. It was very un-poppy, to the point of abstraction. All instrumental too...

To give you some explanation this album sounds like instrumental SATRIANI rock, but crazier and more complex. I mean, some parts is like if you'd like to express the general feeling of headache, thunderstorms and chaos at the same time. But for those who understand this - it is great. >>

Yes I am lucky enough to have one. I love it by the way. On to the questions: I like the neck alot, it's very similar to the standard RG but a little wider, like a mm or 2. I haven't heard anything about the P4 but my P2 listed for $1599 and I got it for $899. Actually he doesn't use a universe he uses a 7-string version of the Petrucci model, which I haven't heard anything about them making one but if they do I'll be the first in line. Jennifer Batten was a GIT student turned GIT instructor, who has developed her own style of 8 finger tapping. She uses the string nuters, though, which I sort of feel is cheating... :) But her chops are incredible, and she knows what she's doing. She's got 2 solo cds, one CD called Doc Tahri or something like that (which is really bad... I can get you the lineup if anyone wants it, but I don't recommend this cd) and has toured with MJ for some time now. She is a shredder to be reckoned with.
Young Guitar...
The dude who was discussing Young Guitar in here failed to note one very important problem, when listing off all of the great stuff in YG magazine. It is almost entirely in Japanese. The pictures are cool, the tab is cool, but the magazine wil piss you off because you can't read it. Also, while I don't believe that Calvin is trying to scam anyone in any way shape of form, I really can't imagine how anyone in the US could get a subscription to YG for $36 a year. They cost $9 at Tower Records... I don't know if you can get that drastic of a price cut by ordering 20 copies. But good luck, if you can. I think the mag is definitely worth $36 for a subscription, if only because of the lessons and tab. You just go psycho when they interview some of your favorite guitarists and you have no idea what's being said.

If you're talking about "Facing The Animal", the answer is absolutely. I'm not too familiar with his older stuff yet, but this album is outstanding. Very different from anything I've heard over the last couple of years. I've heard some people say they think he's lost a step or two over the years, but after listening to this album, I find it hard to believe. The album rocks like aunt Matilda on speeders from the get go. First track, "Braveheart", sets the stage for the whole thing. Crazy insane fusion of metal and gaelic folk music. Has to be heard to be believed. Also, I don't know much about his old vocalist, but this new guy, Mats Leven, is very good. Reminds me a little of the guys who used to be the vocalist for Lynch Mob (George has put the band back together, too. In case anyone's interested.) Title track has a nice build up to a climax in it, and incredible solo in it. He also mixes in the classical influences in pretty frequently. BTW, I'm doing an interview with the man tomorrow, so if anybody has a last minute question to suggest, feel free to hurl it at me via e-mail.

I don't know that that would create an accurate comparison. Sort of like the people on the list who were insisting that Derek sucked back on the Awake tour, before he had integrated himself into the band and the "sound".
