First of all, I'd like to apologize for my incoherent phrasing in the above quote ("If a band..."). *I* don't even think it makes sense stated that way.
But, to address the analogy (and I really don't think it's a particularly *good* analogy) - the statement you make is truer than you realize. If a doctor loves performing heart surgery (or dealing with the heart in general), then after his general internist training, he will train to become a cardiologist. And cardiologists do *not* perform carpal tunnel surgery - orthopedic surgeons do. The doctor would simply refer the patient to a more qualified physician. (I work in the MIS department of a health clinic. Go ahead, try me. :))
The point I was trying to make was that when a group of musicians get together, then whatever creation flows naturally from the integration of those individuals is going to be the best possible music they can create, no matter what kind of music it ends up being. As soon as they allow that creation to be affected by outside (non-musical) influences, the result is something that is less than the best. It may still be great music, but not the *best* music they can create.

If you want sick ELP, then get either "tarkus" (1971) or "brain salad surgery" (1973). Both are very proggy. "Trilogy" is also a very good album. These are considered by many to be the best ELP albums.

There used to be a station on 107.1 that would come in around here (NYC area in NJ), but I'm not sure if it's the same one. They played rock (before they got sold and now play bona fide crap). That (if it got sold away from the crap people and is even viable as the same station) would be coming from Lawn Guylind, but I can't be sure. There's also a station that comes in around 106.9 / 107 ish in Connecticut and area, and I still had it, though fuzzy, into northern NY state. They played some quality rock music from a whole range of eras, but last I was able to tune into it, no DT. Don't know if that helps.

That's part of the problem... they're buying DT's creations, not your own. I have a problem with boots being sold for above manufacturing costs (and since this problem has come to my attention, I have not purchased a bootleg cd). That's my own problem. But when you're making a killing on the bootlegs, then I become at least somewhat outraged, and you're going to deal with it, when you make this shit public. I just wish you'd quit this charade of "I'm doing everyone a favor" and show the fact that this is nothing more than a business, no more caring or friendly, no more concerned with the bands wishes or intents, and no more concerned with who is getting fucked, than any other business. As far as I'm concerned, Mike Bahr has been a pretty cool guy. Prism Records (and the businessman Bahr) is another story altogether. If you find this distasteful, that's fine... but if you can't take criticism, then you're going to be the one who's crying.

enough with kevin already! i'm as big a fan of dt as anybody, but please, remember it was kevin who left the band and it wan't for money, it was that he was heading in a different direction musically then the rest of the band. i saw mike portnoy in person right after the release of "change of seasons", mike said that kevin's leaving was his idea and he left on good terms with the rest of the band, but then he moved to new mexico and shaved his head, or in other words started his new life without the band. i love the music dt made with kevin, but i also love the music with derik. derik is a great player so why can't this debate be laid to rest ? if we need to debate sometihing why don't we debate why the record label won't leave dt alone about "being commercial", one of the reasons i like "a change of seasons" is because it's "not" commercial.

We want music that sounds like I&W so we can still have great DT-like progressive metal after DT completely sells out and KJLB loses his voice from all the pot he smokes. :) It's like having your pot and smoking it, too...or something like that.
Seriously (who, me?), I think this is an interesting thread. The best DT clone I've heard thus far is Hydrotoxin from Germany. I've read that Arkhe sounds virtually identical, complete with a LaBrie-soundalike vocalist (I don't know how much pot he smokes). I haven't obtained Arkhe yet, but Hydrotoxin is a definitely kick-ass prog metal outfit. The guitarist is excellent and sounds like a Vai/Satriani/Petrucci hybrid. The vocals are generally very good but a bit hard to swallow when the singer tries to imitate that growly 6:00 scratch; it just doesn't work. Other than that, it's great, especially the first two tracks.
All this discussion about pot has given me the munchies...time to go raid the fridge. Have fun, all.
