    >There is a Lie single, right? Where can I get it?

You've got to find somebody who owns it and duel them (to the death,
obviously) for posession of the single.

And since I'm still sans "Lie" myself, I figure I'll take this opportunity
to issue a public challenge to any and all of you lucky bastards out there
who happened to get your hands on said item. It's all about you and me,
Ytsejam, this weekend on pay-per-view, where ultimate victory will be
determined in who walks out, well, on who walks out! No biting or
    eye-gouging, though. I'll tell.

Okay....*clears throat* Bruce....um, hate to point this out but there' s
a reason why Yes is just playing the same old songs. They need the
money. People aren't gonna come out and see them if they know they're
playing new shit. When Rush gets up there, they want to play the new
stuff PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY'VE PLAYED THE OLD STUFF A BAZILLION TIMES
AND IT'S GETTING BORING TO THEM. Sorry about the shouting but it seem s
kind of obvious....DT continues to play Ytsejam....but they fuck with
it. (Right now, they're playing it at warp speed.) After a while,
they'll eventually get so sick of it if they play it at all it'll be
like an acoustic version and they'll write some lyrics for James....An d
as far as I know, the labels don't tell the bands what to play live.
They've got more important things to do (such as decide which garage
band is most likely to be able to sell eighty trillion records). I
    might
be wrong about that, but as long as the band makes money, I don't thin k
    the labels give two shits.

P.S Rush probably has a large portion of their stuff memorized as it
    is,
just by virtue of having played it so often....laziness has nothing to
    do with it.

I don't know (I think that they should use ADAT or something
better), but I was very surprised to know that Satriani prefers analog
media to digital media. Maybe it's because he must be a purist that wants
to hear all those very, very, very, VERY high harmonics (if he listens up
    to those high frequencies).

"Flying in a Blue Dream" has the following in the liner notes:
"This album was recorded & mixed with the Dolby SR Noise Reduction
    system".

BTW, Dolby SR is the professional version of Dolby S, which
reduces high-frequency hiss/noise by 24dB (wow!), for you people
interested in numbers. Are decks with Dolby S common in the States?? I
plan to get one here, but they cost me a lot, and my budget is not that
big right now (in fact, it is very low).

Well,I don't agree.I've got a girlfriend, who's not really into DT,but she really likes Erotomania...She also likes those "usual DT favorites for girls":Surrounded,Space-dye Vest and Hollow Years. Also many of my friends, who have nothing to do with music like Erotomania...So I don't think it really matters if it's instrumental,or if it's "Show-off"...

My sentiments exactly. Reminds me of a time I told a friend of mine I was going to see a Melissa Etheridge concert and he was like "ewww you're going to see HER??" and I said "yeah, she's a great musician" and he said "but she's gay!".

Like that just totally changed how much I like her music. NOT. Makes you wonder what some people are looking for in a band...

But hey, >that was two or three months ago, who knows?

I was at this show and think I can clear this up a little.

Toward the start of the show, the place was so filled with cigarrette smoke that James was obviously having to breathe in while trying to sing, that he made a joke by saying: "Hey, anyone got a cigarrette?" and someone in the crowd thought he was serious so they threw him one, and he joked back: "wow this guy thinks Im serious man! what are these like .10 cents each now? (laughs) I don't smoke man, here you can have it back..."

BUT, LATER ON in the show James announced that someone was up for an instrumental spot and said "while I go in the back and smoke a joint".

There ya have it, he gets stoned. Big fucking deal. When you go out to eat, whether it be a restaurant or drive-thru, you dont ask "hey, does that guy with his fingers all over my sandwich smoke pot??" The odds are he does, and he probably just got done picking his nose too.

It's not like James is going to infect you with an unwanted contact-buzz from listening to his amazing vocals on the CD! Give me a foookin break peoples!!!!!!! Just shut the fuck up and listen to the music....er...I mean, just enjoy the songs and stop worrying about James' personal recreation. It's not fucking hurting you....definitely not as bad as whatever you ate at the drive thru today is.

To me, one has sold out when their style changes to suit the flavor of the month. Stone Temple Pilots went from Alice in Chains, to Pearl Jam, to Soundgarden, to whatever the hell they are now... I consider that selling out. Metallica saw that thrash does not equal cash, and so threw their integrity out the window (argue with me if you think I could give a shit). Now, while I hold no love for Eniff Z' Nuff, and recognize that they aren't even prog (I don't know how the topic came up), I want to ask those of you who call them a sell out: Why aren't they rolling in the cash? Why did their sound never really change? How did they sell out, if they started up in one style (be it popular at the time or not) and still, to this day have neither progressed or regressed (subjective terms, but you understand)? You can't sell out if you can't sell. That's just the way it works, dude.

Wow. And this means we should expect a price drop soon, or does this mean you're basically no different than any other bootleg company, except that you tell us how much cash you're making? Nothing personal... just business.

    Hi all

Ah, yes, Tangerine Dream, now there was a band to get stoned to. Just a few Jams ago, somebody recommended starting with the older stuff - I can only second this opinion - makes all this Yanni/Enya noise sound like 'goose farts on a foggy morning' (copyright Leo Kottke). Some of the more ungrateful people on this list are moaning that Dream Theater tend to play basically the same set every night ("goddamit man, I've seen them 17 times on this tour and they've only played 14 different sets") - well, Tangerine Dream would have been a suitable band for these people back in the 70s. I must have seen them live 10 times, and not once did they ever play anything off their albums, and not once did I ever recognize anything they played - this is because they used to improvise everything from start to finish. Weird concerts altogether: just three guys sat before huge Moogs and banks of sequencers, a light show that consisted of three ultraviolet strip lights and hours of amazing music. Check out the live album 'Ricochet' to get a feel of what this was like. And this was back in the days when you had to queue up overnight outside the venues to get tickets - no whinging about Ticketmaster then, just a good solid dose of hypothermia.

On the subject of moaning, what's all this stuff about Mr. LaBrie and smoking? Do I detect genuine concern, or (more probable) just good old selfishness along the lines of "if his voice goes, there will be no more Dream Theater albums for me to enjoy". And don't forget: as long as you don't inhale, you can still get to be president of the United States (or possibly prime minister of Canada, in James' case).

Perhaps the 'album of the year' contest might have been a little more interesting if "Falling Into Infinity" had been excluded - I mean, it wasn't really a surprise, was it?

    Was Marcel Marceau mime-encoded?

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) (http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/2321) Currently playing: Steeley Dan - Pretzel Logic

I think the most Images and Words-sounding disk I've heard is Mayadome-Paranormal Activity. This thing fucking rocks! The vocalist is aweful (that however is NOT like I&W) but the music is dead on. Especially the keyboards and drums. If you haven't picked this up, and you like I&W, I'd do it. If anyone is interested in MP3s from it, let me know. I'll put a couple on a web site.
