I keep seeing people on the Jam talking about Marillion, Fates W.,
Savatage, Symphony X, Spocks Beard, Incubus, etc.... I'm wondering which
is the closest to DT <if that's possible>. I've been studying
progressive music <mainly from a drummer's view, as I play..er..try to
play em> since about 1976 or so. When I first heard DT (PMU I believe)=20
I think I ruined a perfectly good pair of underwear! I immediatly bought
every CD I could find by them and since, have bought everyone that comes
out ON it's release date. This is the Question :
What's the closest CD to I&W ? ....meaning which CD by which band is
close to equal to the technical abilities displayed by ALL members of DT
on I&W ?? ----I realize that this is an opinion I'm asking and i hope
that I don't create tons-o-flame wars....if it does...GROW UP !
Opinions are like A=A7=A7holes -- Everybody's got one, and we ALL think t=

Maybe Metropolis is too much for a person that isn't exposed to progressive music yet, right?

I really think that WFS should be followed by LtL (and while LtL is long, it is not as "show-off" as Metropolis, because it has no "sick" instrumental section) and girls think it is nice. :-)

Ugh! YNM?? Are you sure?

I think that Erotomania suffers from the same problem that Metropolis suffers, don't you agree? I also think that when a person is not yet familiar with progressive bands, they are usually not used to instrumental tracks (you know, people that "need" some voice in their songs).

Just from looking at what people have been posting about Awake, a lot of it was not on the positive side, you know? And I am biased, since it is my favorite album from DT. It was the first album I got to listen to extensively (my cuz, who introduced me to the band, only played me segments of I&W and WDADU); it was the first I owned.

You almost make me see furry chinchillas with hand-grenades. But seriously, they are quite a pain in the ass, and take up a hell of a lot of space ... although they are funny when just randomly "quoted" (no pun intended) and then responded to (yeah, well, your mother eats ... raw rabbits!)

At the Columbus show before one of the Jams, James joked to the audience that he was going to "go back and smoke". One of teh audience members threw him a cig. and he started laughing and mentioning that the guy didn't get the joke. He distinctly said that he didn't smoke. But hey, that was two or three months ago, who knows?

Just because somebody saw him smoking once --- big deal. That doesn't mean that he's a big-time pothead or anything. I'm guessing all the members of DT are smart enough to be semi-responsible with themselves (by this, I mean that i'd be very surprised if any DT members have major drug problems).
My best guess..... - Joe D.

**** My guess is this, that somebody saw him do this AFTER the show, because DT could never do this before the show. They would be too screwed up to hit any of the important shit. They wouldn't be able to feel their hands enough! : ) Later, J

Yeah well, good. That means I hate the new Metallica stuff. And now selling out has been moved to this purely theoretical, esoteric plane. What about selling out all the fans who loved the "old stuff"? (I am here also thinking of Metallica, as the closest example). Ditching them for greater commercial success, and so forth. What about that?

It's interesting you put it like that - "embarassed about." I've had this same feeling about the vocals in DT, but it's not usually his actual voice I've got the problem with - tho' often I fast forward through parts of bootlegs when my friends are in the room b/c of the occasional (or sometimes frequent) cracks/breaks/etc. I find myself mostly skipping songs, however, b/c of their lyrical content. "Burning My Soul," the best example, is characterized by cliches and lines that appear to have just been thrown in there b/c they rhymed with the cliches. "Twisting, turning - losing all sense of yearning - living and learning...." You've got the very overused "twisting/turning" and "living/learning" dichotomies and the "yearning" line that happens to rhyme. Then's there's the occasional totally assinine line, "I say it's green and then you tell me it's red..." "Just Let Me Breathe" is another example. This song is a case where the point is well taken, but, IMO, poorly delivered. It comes off like "Get in the Ring" by Guns n' Roses - very sophomoric lyrics that any angry teenager could have written. Some people will always read far into these things, speaking of deep meaning that everyone's missing, etc, but I think they're diluted. :) Just commenting...
Disclaimer: I greatly enjoy the majority of DTs lyrics, but there are certain exceptions, usually written by Portnoy, that really make me wince when I hear them. They're too common and, again IMO, not up to par with a band the calibre of DT.

Yes! Last week my "Live in Tokyo" video came! I must say that all you Jammer's should pick this VHS tape up, it's a winner! Aside from the live stuff (UaGM, WFS, Surrounded, YJ, To Live Forever, A Fortune in Lies, TTT, PMU), it also has the PMU, TTT, and AD videos! Oh...it has "home video"-type segments of the band!
And yesterday: My LaTM came, as did my HY single, and The Silent Man single! LaTM is AWESOME! And I love "The Way It Used To Be", off the HY disc. Great tune!
What else is out there that I should get next? There is a Lie single, right? Where can I get it?
Thanks, - Joe D.

His voice wasn't that good in 1995. I know that common cigarettes aren't good for anybody's voice, but maybe marijuana... :-)
