I don't know how many of you are subscribed to te DAT-Heads list
    (even though I don't have a DAT player/recorder, I think that is a great
list) and this was the subject of 50% of the posts to the list for, say,
    the last 10 days.

I think it is true that the RIAA is trying to cut down the number
    of people trading tapes (Unfortunately)...

Hey, I have that Green Jello CD! Say what you want about them, but the video for "Three Little Pigs" has to be one of the best ever made. Very creative claymation and very funny too. Am I the only one who remembers this classic video?? And nobody makes better fun of them, than the band themselves, as proven in their song "Green Jello Sucks!"

Obligatory DTC: The "Three Little Pigs" video was getting rotation on the Headbangers Ball at the same time that "Pull Me Under" was. Which is how I got into DT....yadda, yadda, yadda...... ;^)

    > I've heard TD once and I think that's the most boring music since Jean > M. Jarre!

Hmmm, they do have a lot of ambient sounding stuff, so I could see where some may get bored. This however, is not the same thing as categorically dismissing the poster's claim that he hears TD in Kevin's "Unique" sound. Surfing over to a Tangerine Dream site at

    http://www.netstore.de/tadream/samples/tddisco.html

I noticed they have somewhere on the order of 40+ albums out! Listening to the group once, in my sarcastic and rude opinion :), gives your attempt at invalidating it very little weight. It's rather obvious that you just like Kevin to the point where, like many others on the list, will deny anything said about him that you interpret as negative. That's cool, but denying the possibilty what the person said might be based in truth ain't cool! I'm sure the other guy likes Kevin, and wasn't just saying it for the sake of shooting his mouth off. I for one would at least give the benefit of the doubt. Believe me, I like Kevin, I like Kevin's playing,I like Kevin's contribution, I like Kevin's lyrics, I like Kevin's new stuff, I like Kevin's use of Korg, I like hearing that Kevin's using Kurzweil synths, GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!! I like sitting in my car, lighting a cig, and failing to escape that sound. I DON'T always like turning the music down :)

    I like all things Kevin

    heheheheh

I'd be curious to know which TD (I haven't heard much of their stuff either, occasionally on some of the radio stations that play fusion/jazz/prog stuff) the poster was referring to. Just from the sheer volume of the stuff they've put out, I wouldn't know where to start :)

I heard about this story about 2 weeks ago from an avid Bruce trader, so apparently it is true. It's causing quite a stir among Bruce traders. This article mentions that the RIAA doesn't usually persue an investigation unless the artist(s) requests one. I find it hard to believe that Springsteen would inflict an investigation from the RIAA, and if he would, he's truly sad. When was the last time he even released anything?

Yes, but they are still classified as alternative. When people use this word (nowadays) they are referring to the mainstream (Cracker, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Dishwalla, etc.). These bands are not really alternative, but many use that label to describe these bands.

The first time I heard DT was at this birthday party back in '92. A friend of me was already a DT freak, (I suspect he had followed them since 89) (Staale fra Ski, leser du dette? Mail meg!), and he played the tape he had broght the whole time. He would be sitting next to the cassette deck winding and rewinding the tape, playing those crazy guitar/keyboard parts over and over, yelling: "Man, check this out! This is just crazy." Knowing I was (and still is) a big Vai fan, he would, at every Vai-ish humbucky run say "He's better than Vai". I would answer "Well, he does a good job imitating Vai". Staale would then get very offended, and he said: "Petrucci imitates noone!"

Well, anyway, I bought the CD (IaW), the first time I came across it and I loved it instantly, and I still do.

You have a point, but have you been following the current tour closely? This really has not been the case. Aside from the occasional Nightmare Cinema bit and the Derek/Punk Rock routine, there has been very little variety in the setlist. Again this is not a bad thing, but I am one of those people who would love to see them 2 or 3 nights in a row and get a different show every night. Automatically DT's live image would improve. People would go to see them not knowing at all what they were going to play.

    > For a one-time-only performance, I think "Bombay Vindaloo" > kicks huge big ass.

Yeah but as far as I know, this is the only time they have had a *totally* improvised jam that has never been played again on another night. Obviously they are very good at it and I wish they would do it more often.

    > And when was the last time LaBrie repeated "What is this, a fucking > circus?!"

When I went to se them on the first show of the FII tour, he said something like "Have a good night everybody. We'll see you next time. We have a new album out called Falling Into Infinity. *BUY* THIS FUCKING THING!!!" A pleasant end to a great show indeed.

My point is that DT puts on a superb live show. Maybe I'm just such a fan of the live environment that Phish creates, but I personally would love to see more variety in their setlists.

Yeah, it's going to be a self-titled, debut album called "LaBrie". It will be produced by Babyface, and will consist of mostly R&B ballads. Will be in the running for "best new r&b solo artist" in the '98 grammys. Rumor has it that he will also be undergoing throat surgery to lower his vocal range by 3 octaves. ;-) - BH

    Hi folks!

At = this=20 time I totally was into Slayer etc. The video was PMU and I thought: = "Hey,=20 what kind of sh*t is this? Is this singer castrated? And why is he = wearing=20 a napalm death t-shirt? The keyboarder! More keyboards than he has hands = to=20 manage them! This sucks!"

About one year later I had to realize what a poor, immature, little kid = I=20 had been up to this time. At a friend of mine we listened to Metropolis = and=20 it opened my eyes... Now I can't imagine to be without DT. :-) In March=20 they will be in Germany again. I have to buy a ticket soon. Does anyone=20 know who will be supporting them?

BTW, does anyone know MATALEX? A great German band. They combine jazz,=20 progressive rock, metal, crossover and trip hop in their music. The=20 guitarist had been at berklee, too. Sometimes the sound of them (not the =

music) can be compared to Awake.

HELLZ no. I'm no musician. Although I was led into the fantastic arena of prog rock and DT in particular by my older cousin, who is a guitar freak and loves JP. So maybe there's a technicality issue. They certainly do kick major ass and I am now on a mission to acquire all musical releases by them (I've been fanatical for a while, but broke - actually, still am, just don't care anymore). I agree that LaBrie shouldn't start concentrating on the lower end of his vocal range. It's neat hearing some growly notes set between his usual high-flyin' style. But that's not what makes him distinctive (the growly stuff). The amazing high notes are.

Enuff Z' Nuff did not sell out. I am neither a fand nor close friend of the band, but I know the members pretty well, living in their area... anyone who would say they sold out is missing the point that they have ALWAYS BEEN the way they are. To play like Poison before Poison existed is not selling out... it's just the way they've always been.

I'm startin' to come down off my painkillers now. Holy shit alive, do I ever have a lot of e-mail. This is gonna be a long weekend. :)

How did I first hear DT? I was at a BBS gathering in Mesa one day in late '92 and the radio was on, and I got bored in conversation and started listening to the tunes, and Pull Me Under came on. At this time I was already a deep RMQ guy (Rush Metallica Queensryche) and I was like, "Hey, check this out! This song kicks ASS! Is this new Queensryche or something??"

The radio guy played the song a lot but never identified it. In early '93, someone uploaded DT-PMU.VOC (8bit, 22050 mono) to my old pirate BBS, "Symphony of Destruction", and described it as "the new Dream Theater song". I bought IAW, bought WDADU as an import, saw them live in March and May '93 at Club Rio in Tempe, and the rest was history.
