I'd just like to say that I don't agree with the comment that people
would like You Not Me if they didn't know anything about Desmond
Child's involvement. As I said before, I thought that You Not Me was
a very weak song before I knew that Desmond Child had any involvement
with it. You Not Me just does not appeal to me in any way. Period.
It doesn't matter who wrote it; I've heard the song. I feel the same
way about Innocence Faded, and Desmond Child had nothing to with that
one. FII still kicks major ass overall; there just happens to be one
song that I personally don't like.

Hi all, and sorry for the CCs here, but kinda important news. I read
something about trading of tapes, and it is kinda disturbing, where
the Recording Industry Association of America actually went after a
trader. Full story is at:

no idea if this is reliable or not.

Yep. Friend played 30 seconds of Light Fuse & Get the Hell Away and I
bought the tape the next day (Tape, did he say TAPE? Hey it was still the
80's, ok?)

Not to be picky, but my apartment is part of the Nielson ratings. Me. All
by myself. I represent about 500,000 homes. Pretty cool, huh? And no, I
don't have a child and I don't have to fill out a diary. It's a permanent
meter. The great thing about this is that I get to jack up the ratings for
things I like (like Motley Crue on the American Music Awards and MTV's It
Came From The 80s II: Metal Goes Pop special). I love power.

I am really curious to hear how Enuff Z'Nuff sold out. I have everything
they've released and their style has remained intact throughout the years.
The production style may have changed (as have two band members) but the
songwriting has, to my ears, never been targeted to satisfy a certain
constituency. That's not to say that I like everything by them. I hate 90%
of "Tweaked." But I wouldn't call that selling out.

The moment of fate for me was hearing the entire AMBI on Fingers' Metal
Shop one night during the summer of '95. I had heard PMU, Lie, TSM, and
CIAW on the radio before but ashamedly never really got into DT until that
one night. (Honestly, I thought they were good musicians but just a little
too "cheezy", especially James' vocals :) It was kind of a "Ok, I'll
DEFINITELY have to check out one of these guys' albums" thing. Man, I had
no idea what I was in for! I ordered Awake through the mail, and got
pretty excited when I first popped it into my CD player. It sounded better
with each listen. I started picking up on the odd ts's and what not,
catching more notes in each solo w/each listen, etc. I was amazed. I
bought ACOS about a month later (a song that helped me through some of
that teenage-depression shit), I&W the following Jan., and WDADU a year
later (when I FINALLY found it in a store) I now listen to all of my DT
CD's an average of once a week or 2 . . . all of my other albums get a spin
once a month or so. DT has been for over 2 years and ALWAYS will be my
favorite band.
Well, that's my DT story. It could have been longer, but I don't want to
take up TOO much 'jam space :)

I bought the Hollow Years single and here's my $.02:
You Or Me: First of all, I LOVE the channel surfing in the beginning.
Though it gives the song a more socially conscious slant (which I usually
HATE), it works here. I am glad that they decided to forgo the gradual
build into the song for the FII version. It works much better just having
Mike kick things off. Is it just me, or is YOM a bit slower than YNM?
Probably just me. Anyway, the song pretty much stays true to YNM (slight
lyrical changes aside), until the chorus. Here is where Desmond Child's
influence really came into play. And I fully expect to be in the minority
when I say that he SAVED this song. The YOM chorus just drags, both
lyrically and melodically. In terms of lyrics, YOM seems to be about
becoming something that you are not, as opposed the YNM which seems to
reject that very notion. In terms of melody, JL vox sound uncharacteristly
devoid of life on YOM and the melody itself is rather bland. One thing I
do think should have made into onto the FII version is the little keyboard
interlude before the solo, which have some very subtle but very cool
harmonies from JL. Gives the song a much-needed dynamic. And is it just
me, or is YOM, as whole, much more keyboard-dominated than YNM? Again,
probably just me. I also think the guitar solo on YNM is much better than
YOM and I am glad that they cut the repeat of the pre-chorus after the
solo. As a whole, I would have to say that I prefer YNM over YOM. BTW, is
that Sam Kinison talking about sin at the end of the song?
The Way It Used To Be: Some have compared this song to TLF or Don t Look
Past Me in terms of it being an ultra-catchy song that was left off an
album. In that respect, those people are right. And while TWIUTB, is very
pop, very catchy, and ultimately very cool, it falls short of those two
songs. This heavily U2-influenced song is JL s weakest lyrical work in DT
to date (and I LOVE the lyrics to CIAW and AL). It seems to be an
anti-touring song ( I cant stand the crowds/ Or the smell that surrounds
me), or at the very least an anti-traveling song, which is fine. But the
lyrics just seem too...obvious isn't the right word...too easy maybe .
That's not to say the vocal performance isn't strong, because it is.
Anyway, the last negative comment I have on the song is on the
arrangement. WAY too many repeats of the "Looking back on the water..."
section and the middle of the song seems to wander a bit. Anyway, enough
negative stuff. I love the harmonized "whoa"s after the second chorus.
Speaking of harmonies, Ive got money that says that JP is singing back-up
vox during the "ooos" and "ahhs" with JL.. Sounds absolutely killer! But
the real highlight for me is the guitar solo after James yells "Hey!" The
boys sound like they are just having fun and jamming and it rocks. Reminds
me a bit of some of JPs solo on the LiT video. Overall, I like the song a
lot. Would I put it on DT mix for somebody? Depends on the person. That's
alll for now. Next up, my review of MP's instructional video.

Okee dokee...haven't posted in a while, so some of this might be a bit
dated.
Was it just me, or did Graham actually say that Keith Emerson might have
been a good choice for filling the DT keyboard chair? I mean maybe I
just read it wrong but uhhhhhhhh somehow I don't think Keith's style
would mesh with the rest of the band too well *lol* especially since
he's like twice their age, practically. (P.S. I bought ELP's "Live at
the Royal Albert Hall"....don't make the same mistake. It's horrid.)
Let me make one final comment about Derek vs. Kevmo....whether you like
Derek or Kev more it's not that important....DS is in the band, KM is
not. End of story =) myself, I'm not really partial to either
one....they're pretty different.
To the "drummer fraternity" (a Bruford quote =) )....I play heels down
on the basses (double bass, not double pedal, just two bass drums) but I
play heels up on the hihat....is that normal? *lol* I also play
backwards....left hand on hihat/ride, right on snare, etc. You can
extrapolate where the rest of the set is from that. =) Some of my
drummer friends will sit down at my kit and go "huh?" It drove my drum
teacher nuts until he went to a conference and met Gene whats-his-name,
the guy from Strapping Young Lad....apparently he plays the same way and
he's a helluva drummer, so Doc's quit trying to turn me around. (yay)
Oh, and I use Tama pedals....don't even ask me what the model name is, I
don't even remember....HP something, I think.
Got three albums from Laser's Edge you all might be interested in
hearing about....
Stratovarius, "Episode": I have heard some really good things about this
band. Going by this CD, I'm confused. Some of the tracks blew my
mind....these guys are *fast.* But that's about all they've got going
for them. The chord progressions are probably what really hurts it. I
mean, they're all predictable, and I was really never surprised by
anything on this album, other than the pure speed on some of the tracks,
and the fact that there were real choirs and strings used instead of
keys....speaking of keys, the harpsichord sound that appears
occasionally is interesting, but didn't appear often enough to be an
important aspect of the band's style. The guitarist is insane, he's very
good, and the vocals are more than competent. (Is it just me, or does he
sound like Geoff Tate?) The drummer's fills were pretty boring, when he
did them....overall, I'd say this band has mucho potential, and they
just need to get away from J.S. Bach. I mean, I swear, the "circle"
progression (where you move by fourths until you finally reach tonic) is
something they abuse the fuck out of...anyway, if they have any albums
which have a bit more variety to them (the riff is a tool which is
overused by just about any avergae metal bands...) somebody please tell
me =) 6.5/10
Philharmonie, "Nord": If you guys like King Crimson's 80s work, this
French band is seriously good stuff. It's *definitely* rooted in the
whole "Discipline" style, but they do some very different thing with it.
For one thing, the compositions are much more complex than KC's stuff
tends to be from that era, and since it's an instrumental band, there
aren't any annoying Belew-isms to put up with ("it wouldn't matter to a
man with an open heart..."). Some of the song titles are kind of funny
("Morphine in the Skin of a Walrus") but they don't mean anything. There
is a Chapman Stickist, for those of you who like that thing....I also
"Rage" by them, and I think I like "Rage" a bit better, because there's
less Phillip Glass on that one...as the title implies, it's somewhat
more active and aggressive than "Nord"...this is definitely *not*
commercial music in any sense. If you tried to play it at parties most
people would fall asleep, because it's rather serious and repetitve. At
first, it's just too much to swallow all at once, but let it grow on
you, because after a while it will. 8.5/10
Anekdoten, "Vemod": Three words: wow. Wow. Wow. This is phenomenal shit.
Imagine King Crimson's "Red" album, with some very well done operatic
vocals instead of Wetton's rough voice, and imagine a *lot* of doom and
gloom, and that's Anekdoten. This album just continues to blow me away
more every time I listen to it. The lineup is drums, bass,
guitar/mellotron/vocals, and cello/mellotron/vocals. The cellist is
female (something you don't often see in prog rock...don't ask me why,
I'm a musician not a behavioral psychonlogist) and she has a gorgeous
voice. Unfortunately she only shows up on vocals on one track, the
electrifying "Wheel." The other vocalist also has a terrific voice, and
the fact that this is a Swedish band blows my mind...I mean, you'd never
guess it reading the lyrics, the liner notes, or listening to the
singers' accents. They sound sorta British, I guess, but not
Scandinavian by any means. But the music itself is a massive blend of
mellotron-laden heavy prog--distorted Rickenbacker bass, some very good
drumming, tasteful chops on guitar, the delicate singing, and when the
cello makes its appearance it's definitely a unique texture. The
songwriting is excellent, the lyrics are topnotch, and very eerie, the
production is practically flawless...all in all one helluva debut album.
The *only* flaw I can think of--and this is a bit of a stretch--is that
the band doesn't quite have the adventurous, avant-garde edginess that
the Red Monarch always had. Especially with consummate musicians like
Bruford and Fripp, you could never tell what in the hell was coming
next. Anekdoten isn't really as artsy-fartsy as Crimson is, but they
sure are a damn good, gothic rock band. Highly recommended. 9.5/10
Sorry for the huge post. Happy new year, etc., etc.

I cant believe how many times Ive seen this thread come up on the jam since
Ive been here. It amazes me even more how many people sink in and respond.
But it surprises the sh*t out of me that I am tempted to respond to this
for the tenth time : )
9th grade, thought it was 80s cheese whiz, then listened to the guitar run
before the chorus in PMU, and when the seziure stopped, I knew I had found
the meaning to my life.
Just couldnt help myself.

I got into DT when I heard PMU on the radio. To show you how god awful the
musical climate was, I bought the "3 little pigs" single by Green Jello on the
same day! I actually didn't like Images and Words so I didn't listen to it
again. Call me an idiot, I was 14. One night driving home a couple years
later, I heard "ACOS" in its entirety on WHJY in Providence's "Metal Zone" and
I was floored! I couldn't believe how good it was. The CD wasn't out yet, so
I bought "Awake" instead. It's been all downhill since! Seen 'em 3 times!
