Yes. I had never heard anything progressive and I was only used to
heavy metal (at that time, I thought: "If it isn't heavy and noisy, it
isn't good" and "Heaviness is synomym to Quality"). Then, I listened to
Dream Theater and my vision of the world changed a lot.

I was actually pleased when I got the Christmas CD without a jewel case. Aside from understanding the extreme expense of international postage rates, I was pleased since I had some empty jewel cases sitting around doing nothing. I also really dig how the liners are, as opposed to the plainness of last year's (not that it was bad, by any means, but this one is better). I also really like the contents, but haven't given it a good enough listen to comment on it much. My first experience hearing DT happened sometime back when I&W was relatively new. Some friends (and fellow metal fans with an appreciation for prog) were talking a lot about them, so I asked what DT sounded like. I was very interested after hearing the description. One night after coming home from something, I had the radio on a local classic rock station (K-SHE 95 for anyone in teh St. Louis area). I heard Take the Time start (I think they announced it was DT, so I was paying attention) and was totally blown away. I was like "that's a keyboard?! DAMN!" and I sat still in the driveway for the duration of the song. that was it :).

This brings up a question... When trying to introduce people to DT, I often hear "I hate the vocals". And then they won't even give DT a chance. Do other people get this?

I've asked what the problem is, and the answer is the high pitch of the vocals. Later on, I've put on Space Die Vest, where James sings lower. The same people will say "Hey, this is pretty good". When I tell them it's DT, they say "I like this singer better"!

Just a thought, but if DT wants more commercial success, maybe James should use the lower end of his range more often...

P.s. I like James' voice both ways. High pitch is ok with me, I liked Geddy Lee on 2112!

i think it was in late 92, either that or early 93, my band was playing a gig and during one of the set breaks one of the guitar players put I&W on, and i just became entranced with it. i asked him who it was and he told me, then i spent the rest of the night BEGGING him to let me borrow it, which he adamantly refused to do. bastard.

Actually, what lead me to go buy my first DT album was that little scourge= called MTV.

I was in 5th grade at the time. A young'un...9 years old (I'm 16 now). I= was a big-time MTV watcher, as were alot of other kids my age. And there= used to be this show called "MTV Rocks." I had heard PMU and TTT on the= radio before, and I loved it, but the damn DJ's never really specified who= the group was. Anyway, I was tuning in to this show, and all of a sudden,= the opening riff to PMU rung through the air. I literally COULD NOT= believe what I was hearing. So, I looked in the bottom left corner for the= group/track/album info and *bang*, another DT fan was spawned. :)

Y'know, all Desmond did was to re-write the words to the chorus, and change the chords of the chorus. The band themselves changed the chorus to a different key, and changed the lyrics in the verses. Since the new chorus is far better lyrically than the demo "It's either you or me, and I can see the difference." repeat -- pretty uninspiring.) I'd say that Desmond's infoluence overall was a positive one. Now, some of the other changes I'm not wild about -- like the pause before the chorus and some of the different orchestrations, but that wasn't Desmond's doing. It's pretty silly to say that the only difference between "You or me" and "you not me" was Desmond's doing. The band wasn't going to use the song at all, so Desmond played with it, the band tweaked it more, and it ended up on the album. If you aren't happy, fine, fut the alternative was to have a FII that was shorter. We wouldn't have gotten another song. I think this was said more or less in the current issue of the Fanclub Mag, so if you haven't gotten it yet, you will. and if you have gotten it, why didn't you read it?? ;)

Ok, so what if Mike could hit a synth drum pad and have it do a real cool drum fill in the middle of Metropolis? That would be pretty neat, but it wouldn't really show musicianship. Don't get me wrong, Derek doesn't do this a lot, but I was just using the example to show that Kevin could (in my opinion) achieve equally impressive effects with much simpler equipment. The fact that some of the coolest stuff Derek does is all computerized doesn't impress me very much.

If anyone out there knows how I can get DT's Instrumental albums or other videos besides Live in Japan let me know. I live in Canada.

I'd also like to comment on the lyrical content in FII. I think it's the best writing they've done. It really comes from the heart, although I rather prefered the ser-real lyrics with all those cleche's. Over all the writing is enjoyable either way. Private mail gone public? It's in poor taste, I agree. However I have decided to resolve ANOTHER little one of 1997's gifts to me, and I just wanted it made known how, and to issue a general warning to the Jam about dealing with this guy (I've already heard from many of you on this topic already, and I wish I'd spoken to you all first). Be very careful if you ever deal with Mr. Bode, and register *everything*.

dreamer@cww.de (Olaf Bode) wrote: > Today I made my final decision, but I'd like to know why you > didn't reply to the mail I sent you a few weeks ago...

Because I'm sick of hearing from you. Each message you send me makes it clear that you don't understand a damn thing I say, or else you just ignore it entirely. I believe that if you received the registered refund letter, which was sent to the same addresses as the CDs, then by extension you must have received the CDs before that. I now know it wasn't the right country code, but if it worked once anyway, it seems it would have worked before as well. And if it didn't, then why did you get the refund letter???

But you know what? I'm tired of hearing you whine, and I'm tired of reading your bullshit. So I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to fulfill your order from scratch, and since I couldn't come up with an Acoustic Dreams T-shirt, I will give you a refund for the T-shirt purchase, all from my own pocket. In exchange for me doing these things, I want you to get out of my life and stay there. I expect the last words I read from you to be "I received the package".

Now this entire time, I have been waiting for you to tell me one simple thing: what country you live in. You never have said. Never once. I know from talking to other people you have traded with, that you live in GERMANY, not the Netherlands. But you didn't have the common courtesy to tell me that yourself; you just kept insulting me. Since more than half my European customers live in the Netherlands, I played the odds and sent it there, and guess what?? You received it anyway!! The postal service corrected my mistake, since they knew that Dortmund was in Germany, and I got the registered return receipt with YOUR signature on it. Convenient, huh? And since they did it this time, there's no reason why they might not have done it *every* time. And THAT is why I believe you received BOTH sets of CDs.

I think I'm bending over backwards here, and I'll hate myself for doing this, but I want to wipe you out of my memory right now and as soon as possible. And I'm sure others will decide that if they just pester me like you did, that I will do the same thing for them, but of course I won't, because now I know ahead of time that they might try.

Now, as soon as you confirm that this is the correct address to send to, I am sending you the above materials. If you say "that's the wrong address" and don't give a correct one, which is what you've been doing this whole time, then I won't send you anything, ever again. I think that's more than reasonable.

The parcel address I have for you is: Olaf Bode Vogelpothsweg 18 44149 Dortmund, Germany

The letter address I have for you is: Olaf Bode Postfach 10 05 27 44005 Dortmund, Germany

Which one do I use, and if neither, than where shall I send this package? You've got ONE chance at this. Don't blow it.

    Sincerely yours,

Hahah. This is funny. I've been back for two days and have read probably 50 posts with people saying "I don't like YNM and you can't do anything about it." hahah. Ah, well. I *fookin* love the song(especially the orchestra hit). I guess that's my problem. Oh, well. 90% of you know you like it but just have a stigma that someone else tried muddling the song. What Mike said about it in the DTIFC mag basically decried any of the Desmond Child pouts alot of people have. I mean, I used to have a terrible stigma against country music, but occasionally find myself tapping my foot to a song or two, then get angry because I was subconsciously enjoying it. I decided why fight it? Now I just hate people who write country music and not the music itself. :) heheh.

By the way, bonkers to Everyone at the DTIFC and Mikey P. for putting together this Christmas gift. It is pleasant. To those who don't have it or haven't received it yet: Wouldn't you like to be a pepper, too? :)

    Washburn sucks.

The one I heard was Billy Ray Cyrus, but I'm sure Bill juggled it around a little. Sort of like "Explain to me how John Lennon is killed but <Barry Manilow/Garth Brooks/Hammer> keeps making albums."

Mine is the classic story, with a slight twist. Like many other long-time ytse-jammers, I heard Pull Me Under on the radio a couple of times, thought it was the coolest thing I had heard in a while, and went out and bought Images & Words. Needless to say, Images & Words blew me away like no other album I had ever heard. Partially this was because I didn't have much in the way of pre-conceived expectations, and partially because I&W is, in my opinion, the best prog-metal album ever recorded. The twist to this story is that I immediately called my friend Eric, who has similar musical tastes to mine. I said, "Eric, I just bought this new CD. You have to get it!" He said to me, "Is it Dream Theater? I just got it today and it is un-f**king-believable!!!" So we talked for a good long while about how cool the CD is, and the rest, as they say, is history.
