You want to hear KM's "unique" style, listen to any Tangerine Dream CD.

I, for one, enjoy both keyboardist. But, you can't listen to MP without
hearing some Neil Peart, you can't listen to DS without hearing some
Elton John, and you can't listen to KM without hearing some Ralph
    Wadephul or Paul Haslinger.

I also look foreword to the Chromakey CD, but I don't think it will be as
good as DT, he hasn't surrounded himself with the same caliber of
    musicians as DT.

P.S.: I hope he doesn't sing any songs, he sucked on the demo version of
    SDV.

I play heel down, but my feet donīt touch the ground but are maybe an
inch or two from it.My feet hardly move when I play my ankles do most of
the work.My feet hardly ever tense up even when Iīm playing really

Er, Derek's still wearing the tight leather pants and big earrings. And
terrifying everyone with his onstage antics. Bafu's recent commentary on
    him was dead-on. :)

    you meant? Oh, sorry...:)

    ]From Bernardo:

Methinks it refers to his live playing. I definitely don't think it's
because he's too loud in the mix. I wish it were so...my main complaint
with Kevin Shirley is that Derek's sound just doesn't stand out the way it
    should on FII.

    ]From Peter:
    > And I believe

This is the first thing I've heard about Chromakey in ages. Do you have
more info on it, like a release date or anything?

My own point of view on the Kevin vs. Derek debate: I liked Kevin's work
with DT. I like Derek's work with DT. That's all I need to say.

    Cheers,
    Phil

    Hi Josh!
I've never seen DT live, except small parts of their gig by European VIVA
Channel. It should be a great experience for me to see them live, but I
haven't had a possibility to do this. Maybe this year. I agree that live
shows are different than listening to CD's, so hope, I'll have an
    opportunity to see them live.

I've been reading all these comparisons about KM and DS, and thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. I would have inserted my posts into the other relavent posts, but I'm computer illiterate. Anyway, IMHO the 2 best keyboard solos are KM's in TTT and DS's in TOT. This is where both keyboard players had the most soloing time to show off. I think it's a pretty close competition in this case. In comparing these two solos i am curious what other fellow jammers think. I will say that I like the way KM's piano playing style is slightly more appealing to me. But I like DS's choices of sounds. Personally, I think MetII will be the best indicator of who is more appealing to the fans. DS was RIGHT ON LIVE. Too much ass-flaming wiggle didn't seem to effect his playing.

Something has always puzzled me about Kevin's leaving. The direction the band now seems to have taken would embrace (to a point) Kevin's new direction in music. Hearing both his demos and the chroma key stuff, several songs could have definitely been "dt'ed" i.e "Even the Waves" or "Shallow" or "Chroma Key". With all of Derek's "trimming the fat" ideas, Kevin might have turned out fit into DT's quest to break into mainstream music. His songwriting (especially now) lends itself to shorter, and less complex songs. I mean I never understood why DT never released "Surrounded" or "6:00" as singles. Granted they are a little long but they are far better reflections of what Dt is, rather than AD or Lie. People want to hear something new, the aforementioned examples are.

Obviously he didnt' want to do DT anymore, but I think a compromise could have been reached.

Just a few observations about the production. In AL, wouldn't you say the drums come in just a few hundred decibles too high? In PS, do you think that Kevin Shirley could have turned JP's guitar a little higher during the heavy part at the end? I do like hearing so much of JM though. All in all it could have had a "cleaner" sound, but it's definitely better. I prefer MP's "pringle" sounding drums (I'm actually starting to like that sound) over MP's "popcorn" sounding drums thanks to David Prater. Most songs on FII I can't complain about, but the inconsistency messes up the flow a little bit for me. Just some anal retentive observations I made because I have no life right now.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a list of all official single releases of DT??? I have got Lie and Silent Man...

I can only dream of seeing DT live as I live in Perth, Western Australia...and hardly any bands come here...I have seen Def Leppard, Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, Paradise Lost, Fear Factory, Carcass, Cathedral, Entombed....But what about DT? Or any other prog met bands??? Not enough radio play...and not enough fans...so, I can understand why DT needs to write commercial stuff...but even so, I have not heard DT on the radio here once...never...

And I happen to be someone who likes all of FII not just because it is full on brilliant...but also because it is DT....if it was them that released that stupid Barby Girl song, I would probably like it because it is DT...I just love their sound, and you can't top James LaBrie on vocals...(not that I care, but what ever happened to Charlie Dominici?)

Best DT song ever...Lifting Shadows Off A Dream.... Best CD of 1997...other than FII...Ozzmosis... Any here like W.A.S.P. ...especially The Crimson Idol???

As a keyboard player, I have looked pretty closely at this.

Yes, he sure could, and in my opinion, he did a lot more considering the equipment he used. A lot of Derek's sound comes from something that really takes no skill -- the Prophecy and Trinity have a pressure sensitive ribbon that produced things like harmonics, filter sweeps, and feedback type sounds. Kevin used a Korg DW-8000 from the mid-80s that had only a joystick (pitch bending and vibrato), but still made some very interesting sounds. I think Kevin was a much more PURE keyboard player.

Those of you who listened to the concert on liveconcerts.com will have some idea of what I'm talking about. For example, that weird feedbacky-bendy thing at the beginning of LITS is PRE-RECORDED. Derek's hit the button to play it quite a few times during the night between songs. One thing that I think made KevMo great was that he used very little (if any) MIDI or external control.

Then there's the topic of how Derek's sounds mimic a guitar so much, but I won't even get into that :)

No, this is incorrect. DS and JP are playing the solo in unison the whole way through. The guitar is primarily panned to one side, and the keys panned to the opposite side. Then the mix of both is panned back and forth, alternating the emphasis between the keys and guitar, and then back to an equal mix (panned in the middle) for the ending. It has also been noted that for this part, DS used a guitar-like patch, and JP used a synthy-like guitar sound, which would make the two instruments sound a bit similar. The chunky guitar you hear in the background is most likely just another rhythm guitar track.

You should get to know more teenybopper girls within the 10-14 age bracket. <pause> Not like *that*! People, people...

My ears have just stopped ringing from the Long Island show the other day. Meaning it must've been good, right? Anyhow, due to a smegload of forgetfulness on my part, I left my earplugs in the car. To further compound the problem, my laziness kicked in, and I didn't even bother trying to find my way out to them again. Lack of 'plugs probably isn't a problem for most of you folk, but I've fairly sensitive hearing (read: "wussy") and... At least it wasn't as bad as my first Rush show. I literally heard little more than ringing for three or four days afterward, and my full hearing didn't return for at least a week. Scary stuff, considering the permanence of ear damage.

As far as concert socialism, er, socialization goes, I saw Syrinx and Mr. Merlo, but didn't make the 'rounds' beyond that (again, due to laziness, plus heaps of poor social skills). I seemed to be in a rather 'Jammer concentrated area, so I'm sure some of you folk saw me. I was the tall gangly weiner with the 'pony', the one every one of you probably wanted to smack repeatedly for standing in front of you. And so it goes... I must say the Vanderbilt is a kick-ass venue, probably one of the best I've been to. They actually had circulating air! Who'da thunk it.

At the local Taco Bell after the show (the only fast-food joint that was still open after 11:00 in the immediate area -- what's up with that?), I was talking to my friend, Erik, the shorter, clean-cut guy next to me at the concert with the booming radio-friendly voice. We got to discussion of Galactic Cowboys. He said he liked the band, but his major problem with them, and a number of other bands enjoyed by many kids on this list were the "barbershop" vocals. I've heard of many reasons to not like a band before ("the singer sounds like a girl" for instance), but this one seemed particularly ludicrous. Who in their right mind dislikes vocal harmonies? Aye-aye-aye...

In a related story, this same friend is in the process of converting one of our senior managers at work to DT fan. She's 50-something and a grandmother. Her favourite band...? Metallica.

    No kidding.

    >What's Keith Emerson up to these days anyway ?

ELP is back together (and has been since the early '90s) and touring (or was recently -- haven't gotten an ELP Digest for a while), doing primarily a greatest-hits set. Dunno if you've heard any of their newer studio albums, but they're far inferior, "In the Hot Seat" in particular, to their old stuff. The reason for this is they (and their producers especially) were trying to re-win the American radio audience. It took 'em awhile, but they finally realized this is not going to happen. Radio's not what it used to be and DJs can't play what they want anymore. Coming out in '98 or '99, they've a new album in the works, something in the vein of "Tarkus". Long epic sort of thing, prog-fodder, y'know.

In regards to Keith specifically, it seems he's fully recovered from his hand surgery. That threw him off for a good bit, but if you take a listen to his track on the Magna Carta album, "Steinway To Heaven", and compare it to the live version of the same song (Ginastera's "Dance Creole") on "Live at the Royal Albert Hall" (recorded soon after the surgery), you can see he's back to normal, i.e. good.

Anyhow, hopefully with the new album and everything, it'll pull ELP out of their slump (which started in, what, 1978?). They've certainly got a lot of talent/potential, so it's definitely possible.
