I was under the assumption that the solo that went from the left to
right speakers was all keyboard, can someone clarify this for me? I
have listened to it a lot, to try to figure it out, and came to this
conclusion because I think I can here the guitar playing a chunky
power cord type thing behind the keyboard.
Also, Derek's silver keyboard, I assume that this is the Trinity, I
have a friend with a Trinity that does a lot of guitar style bends and
stuff on the joystick, and the joystick has almost fallen apart,
luckily for Korg only a few weeks after the warranty rang out, anyone
else heard of this ??.

It's called a pitch bender AFAIK, I don't know about Derek 'cause I have
yet to see them live, but couldn't Kev pull of some wicked shit with
this thing ?
When I first heard I&W, I though all the keyboard solos where actually
done on a guitar run through some weird harmonic device. My friend
insisted it was a keyboard, but I said, "Nah, you can't get that sort of
clean bending on a keyboard...'
Then I saw LiT and watched KM on the UAGM solo and it totally blew me
away. Just the skill and precision with which he handled his instrument
was incredible.

That would be a ferry between Sweden and Finland. I have a FM interview on a tape to prove that. IMO yes they did. FII's a great album on any other scale but not in comparison to what DT have done earlier, they're supposed to be in a league of their own. But, with Metro II they have another chance to convince and convert us cynics. Don't get me wrong, I like FII but I LOVE everything else they've done before.

This sounds like Virgil Donati. he is a very impressive drummer who is (if they are still together?) in a twat band ccalled "Southern Sons". Blatant commercial trash. but it makes him heaps of dollars to fund anything else he may want to do ie attending drum conventions, releasing instruction videos etc

Vanden Plas is a band that somehow reminded me of the headliner tonight, incorporating progressive elements to heavy metal sound. I don't know whether the Dream Theater phenomenon have inspired a generation of bands that sound similar to them, or merely made this type of band more visible, but it certainly is a welcoming phenomenon. It brings us back 10 years, doesn't it, when Metallica was spearheading the change in the heavy metal soundscape. Tonight, this band did very well, and I'm sure they made many new friends in Copenhagen. Dream Theater delivered a truly breath-taking 2 hour set which combined their usual professionalism with energy, making this the best gig that I have ever been to. If the readers recall the issue that all of us decided to review Falling Into Infinity, you'll remember that I gave the lowest score amongst us, but ended the review by saying that these songs might work better in live situations. It absolutely does. It was very appropriate that they kicked off with Lines In The Sand, one of the highlights of the new disk. Under A Glass Moon was heavily arranged, and keyboard solo displayed a new dimension to their sound (it is the B3 that's making the difference here). I first thought they performed a truncated version of Change Of Seasons, before figuring out what they were up to. But their ability to chop this song in 3 without making it feel out of place is just one display of their phenomenal strength. Arrangement skills, improvisation skills, instrumental skills, call it whatever you want, I don't think that there is a single band in hard rock today that can match the depth and the versatility of Dream Theater today. Note that there were keyboard and drum solos, but there wasn't any bass or guitar solo of any significance (okay, excluding the instrumental bits--The Ytse Jam and the middle bit of Change Of Seasons). The reason? Because Myung and Petrucci are all over the place anyway. Actually, some of the thing that Myung does must be seen to be believed (like the time he came out with the 12-string electrical bass).Mike Portnoy's drum solo was absolutely spectacular, and he even managed to include 2 seconds of 6:00. Talking of which, Petrucci managed to squeeze 2 seconds of Fortune in Lies at the very end of the main set. When the gig was over, I didn't realize that they have criminally underrepresented my favorite album by only performing 2 songs from Awake. But I was too busy freaking out to notice when the show was on. I also think that Peruvian Skies is a weak song to perform live. Next time, some more from Awake please (I would love to hear the entire A Mind Beside Itself suite instead of just Voices, for example).I would have liked to hear more from the first album, too (Fortune In Lies or The Killing Hand, may be?)Last time I saw them, they merely executed their songs in a clinical manner, anxious to get to the end. I couldn't blame them, it was coming to the end of the European tour in 1993. This time, my expectations were more than fulfilled. The hottest band at the moment? I guess the point I was trying to make originally was that seeing them live is totally different from listening to the CD. 9 times out of 10 a weak song on a CD will sound better live. And even if you still dont like the song, have a beer and in a few minutes it will be over. DT could probably get up and play BonJovi and even though the songs would suck, it would still be something worth talking about. Bottom line, they are excellent musicians. Wish there were more like them.

I totally agree with you. I was down on the song on the disc, got HY single and was liking You Or Me a lot. At the Jaxx show, I was totally blown away by this tune. It just rocked!

I agree here, whenever I put a DT CD in my changer in the car, or in the stereo in the house, I listen to that bad boy all the way through. It just doesn't get any better.
When I go on 4 hour trips down to Charlotte, NC for business, I know I can load the CD changer with 4 DT CDs and not have to worry about touching any buttons at all!

I'm almost positive that it is the keyboard and guitar alternating, with one speaker being keyboard, the other guitar.
Didn't someone post something about this and how it was a pain in the ass for the producer to get this all together during the making of the album?

You should relate it to other songs, when a bad song sounds better live, a good song will really blow you away. When I'd hear YNM after LITS for example, I still wouldn't be too impressed by YNM.
