Well, I've seen this debate going on since someone posted about Derek's
first DT gig where he'd spent 2 weeks learning the material and flubbed some
of the samples (playing hold on, wait a minute... during the intro to 6:00).
To any of you who complain about KevMo being better than DS, you're not
thinking in relative terms. One man's horse is another man's dinner. You
must remember one thing, Kevmo quit of his own accord, the band didn't fire
him. The band enlisted Jordan Rudess first who was in for a very short
amount of time and then picked up Derek who at the time had long hair and
was made fun of by Mike for being Mr. Arena Rock, so Derek showed his
enthusiasm by lopping the bangs and not wearing large hoop earings and tight
leather pants. (At least I HOPE he quit doing that.) heheh. Anyway, image
has nothing to do with it...

Derek has a different style than Kevin, that is obvious. But Derek wasn't
picked because of his playing style, he was picked for his skill. He was an
able player with experience in the music business and a college degree.
(From Berklee) I'm sure Derek wasn't the "perfect" replacement, and he
wasn't invited to join the band until halfway through the Waking Up the
World tour while on a ferry crossing the strait between Germany and Denmark
(forgive me if the geography is wrong).

Even though you might think I'm a Derek fan, I'm actually a Kevin Moore fan,
myself. I like the more classical moods of Kevin's playing, but it doesn't
give me an unfavorable impression of Derek, either. With Derek, I miss the
subtleties of the instrument. The mellow interludes, a la, The Mirror, and
the peaceful melodramatic phrasing a la Wait for Sleep will be sorely
missed. Yet, how can we not say whether Derek won't use them in the future?
Derek brought new vibe into the band, breathing new life into the old style
and melding it into a solid conglomeration of aggression and intensity, yet
solemnly placated it in places you wouldn't expect or notice without a
second listen. The choice selections of samples used in the right places
melt in your mouth like an M&M on a sunny day, moreso than Kevin's, IMO.

After all is said and done, remember the IMO's. This whole discussion is
completely based on relative information that is solely the descretion of
each author's interpretation of the music. Keep an open mind and don't
hastily make an angry retort against something you disbelieve in, because
the other person really doesn't care what you think. (No offense, we don't
    really know you. :P )

I apologize for the wasted bandwidth, I need to practice my typing skills.

I have to agree here... while I don't believe YMN is the best of DT
songs, I still do like it, but it really kicked some ass live. It
somehow had a different sound to it... more ... uhh... hmm, more
something... but it was definatly very cool seeing it live...

Hey all... At this point, I don't give a rat's third buttock who's playing keys. Both players do a good job (well, one *did* a good job, and one's doing a good job...), and I enjoy them both.

    HOWEVER...

I must admit that I miss Kevin Moore, for one reason alone -- lyrics. Since Kevin left, Mike has taken up his slack. While he has a few clever phrases turning around him, his skills aren't what Kevin's were (shrugs and waves "hi" nervously to Mike).

I wonder if Derek writes lyrics... and if he does, what are they like? I think that question is key to how the next album will turn out. With DT getting some exposure (cover-out displays at Tower and Borders around here, listening stations, radio play, etc.), the next effort (not counting Metyropolis II -- although, we might have to...) will be key. Lyrically, DT has "grown up" in the sense that their subjects are steeped in experience rather than fancy. Some question the importance, but, as a writer, I listen to the lyrics, read along on my first few listens, etc.

I think Mike will only get better as a lyricist. Really, he's making up for lost time. Who knows how old those lyrics are? I mean, he wrote part of a song for I&W, none for WDADU (except the unreleased-until-a-ton-of-time-later ACOS, which coulda-woulda-shoulda been on I&W), and one song on Awake. Now, he's got what, three or four song credits on FII, and is suddenly thrown, practically "newborn and naked" into the spotlight lyrically. He's just got to work on those poeyrt muscles, methinks. And I think he will. He's DT's biggest fan (how many of us have a boot of every show? ^_^), and as such can appreciate DT from a fan's point of view. A unique situation.

    Now I'm babbling. I'll stop. There. I've stopped. ^_^

You can sit back and trash either keyboard player for what they aren't or you can sit back enjoy who they are. Sure KM was one the most important aspects of DT but he blows on the new Fates Warning album. DS has an amazing sound that really adds new quality to DT, but I noticed his keyboard had no patch chords or midi out when it came to Metropolis at their show in Toronto. You cannot compare these to players, but you can respect the fact that they are a true aspect of DT. Now that being said, I would like to comment on the new album. It rocks! It took me a little while to ajust but I can say that their is one song on the album I can't enjoy. You have to respect a band that can put out 5 albums that all rock and are all different. I'd like see Metallica do that. People that say DT has sold out should take a look at the real sell outs: Metallica, Queensryche and I Mother Earth and start looking for a new sound like The Tea Party and Big Wreck. Dream Theater did not sell out, Just wait until you hear Metropolis II!

I dont think its a matter of 'forcing' listeners into anything. Its simply that not as many ppl like prog....or most *radio listeners* dont like prog. Radio only plays what their listeners want to hear. Same with MTV.

Hey, Got a question fer ya'all. On the radio version of "You Not Me", is the guitar solo lengthened or trimmed down? I heard it on the radio tonight, and the solo section sounded quite different than on the album. Maybe I'm imagining things, but maybe I'm not :) Thanks for any info.

Amen, brother. The reason I prefer Derek to Kevin is that Derek <while still using the old standard B3, rhodes, etc.> creates sounds that look forward and Kevin used sounds that look backward. Obviously a Rick Wakeman influence and there's nothing wrong wit that, but I want to hear something I HAVEN'T heard.

I don't know, Kevin. I thought she was pretty schweet when she was fondling me. Of course, maybe it was because she was interested...and drunk...and there. :)

The funniest part was afterward when she wanted James to sign her breasts and James, the good married man that he is, opted to sign her hand instead.

Derek graduated from Berklee, eh? So that makes JLB the only DT member now who did not attend that fine institution.

This interests me, since next week, I will start my first semester as a Berklee student. :-)

As far as Kevin's lyrics go, I must admit that almost all of my favorite songs by DT, both lyrically and musically, are the ones that Kevin wrote. The most notable exceptions are Metropolis(JP) and LSoaD.(JM) But PMU, WfS, Lie, Surrounded, all of them just grab you by the heart and take you along! That is the reason I like DT.

I just got FII today(finally!) and I must admit that it doesn't grab me like the others did. Maybe it'll take some getting used to, but maybe having Kevin gone has caused something to be missing. :-(

    Hopefully, they'll get it back!

Hi Jammers! Someone wrote about Derek Sherinian being too 'over the top'. What does it mean? I've listened to FII (see? I'm using acronyms too!) many times now, and the thing that has me most impressed, is the fact that I can't hear DS as much as I used to hear Kevin Moore. At times, I even forget that he's in the band!! I try to concentrate in the keyboards, but after a while, the drums and the guitars fill the sound, so I end up being swallowed by what I think, is the part of DT that has more presence. I joined the list a few weeks ago, so can anybody tell me what other keyboard players DT considered for the position? When I first heard of Kevin Moore leaving the band, I had imagined Rick Wakeman's son, Adam, to fill the spot. Adam is quite talented, but I knew such a thing would have never happened! Regards, Bernardo PS: Banner? No Banner!

    Hi all!!

To those of you who caught the Simpsons Christmas episode, remember when they went to the old folks home and Jasper "couldn't feel nothin' below his chin"? :) Well, the teeth are gone and the nitrous sure was helpful and the painkillers they got me on now are fantastic. So I'm expecting near-zero lost work time, given only that I can't drive while I'm on this shit, I should get plenty done here at home.

This is an example of how awesome 1998 has already been to me so far: I get home from the surgery, and the Xmas '97 CD is waiting for me in the mailbox! Huge kudos to Neil, Denis, and Steffen!! And man, to a person like me who screws with sound for a *living*, hearing the contents was a real blast. I won't go into any further detail than that, to preserve the surprise for others. I for one am QUITE content with the disc as it is.

Is it really? Buy a Trinity Plus and you get all of his patches. It's there, he doesn't even edit the preset sounds. Want a guitar sounding solo patch? Try "Monster Lead". Want New Millennium's intro sound? Try "Anafuzz". What I prefer in Kevin's playing that he created moods. I think he really wrote and still writes songs from the heart, from his soul. And I just can't feel it from Derek. He plays like an ordinary rock keyboard player on his hammond. Maybe the point's that I like Kev's classical influences better than an Elton John fan's poppyjazzy whatever. Anyway that's my opinion and maybe you don't agree but I think that Kevin is the very man who has unique style. Look at those Moorewannabe keyboard players in other prog bands (eg. Shadow Gallery, Lemur Voice, etc). They all use that analogue moogish sound for soloing (like Kev's sound in Ytsejam, PMU, UAGM, LTL). And I believe that Chromakey's "Dead Air for Radios" will be much better than FII. In sensible lyrics and real emotions for sure!
