Since I got my CD on Tuesday, I have been waiting for someone to bitch
about the CD coming without a jewel case :) In my experiences jewel
    cases
that are send in a normal envelope have a very good chance of arriving
in a 100 pieces. Mine came all the way here intact, the cardboard sleeve
seems to be a good idea, considering it is free and sending it in a
    jewel
case would have been costlier postage wise.
My suggestion is to contact the president of the fan club from where
your friend got the CD from.

The way I see this is that radio has always forcefed its listeners, even
before the great video revolution. Look at the top 40 charts throughout
rock history. Do you think ELP's tarkus will ever be appreciated on radio?
What about ACOS? Forget longer pieces right off the bat, what about
Watcher of the Skies from Genesis, Siberian Catroo from Yes, or any
current prog from Enchant, Magellan or whatever. Radio has always dumbed
down america and abroad. MTV just carried it through to televission.

As a keyboard player of almost 20 years, I take both approaches. I like
imitating sounds, I also like creating new sounds. Depends on what is
called for. Nothing can ever replace an organ sound except an organ sound.
I like to get pretty close for organs, pianos, guitars, basses, drums, and
electric pianos. There are some sounds I like to have around, like classic
moog sounds. If I were able to, though, I would definitely create my own.
That is what gives a keyboardist his individuality.

    Drummers,

    >>i can't imagine that anyone still plays with heel down or am =
    i wrong?<<

I play heel down sometimes. It really matters how much volume I am trying
to get out of my kit, and how fast I am playing. It really helps me with
my dynamics. I think it is good to learn both styles. It is similar to
using traditional and matched grip. There is no right or wrong way, but
each technique has its own unique sound.

    >>i am probably going to show my age but i use ludwig speed kings with =
    tama double sided beaters.<<

I used to have a pair of speed king pedals. I sold them along with my
first kit back in 1988. I never should have sold that kit (60's Ludwig 7
piece kit with a Slingerland Radio King snare in a black oyster finish-same
finish as Ringo's kit) . I love my "new" kit even more, but I'll never be
able to get another set of vintage drums like that first kit.

Won't be able to post much, cause I'll be leaving for California. Just got
offered a show. It'll be on ABC Wednesday nights.

It'll be called "Let's Hunt and Kill the Spice Girls." Once a week we'll
let loose the Hounds of Hell and chase down each one of those no-talent
mongoloid herpes-ridden corporate whores and put a shotgun in their
mouths, like a big black cock of death, and pull the trigger and save the

We'll come back next year with "Let's Hunt and Kill Kenny G."

I originally posted the KM and DS message, and I just wanted to reflect on
    other jammers' comments.

    I don't HATE Derek's keyboarding - actually I quite like his style - just
not as much as I liked KM's. Although, if Kevin Moore was still around for
FII, I probably wouldn't like it as much. The first time I listened to FII,
I wasn't sure if I liked it much, but the second time (about 3 minutes
later) I loved it. This was the first time I had actually heard Derek, as I
    haven't got ACOS - yet :)

    In 3420:
    > > while I also like the keys only part of "Wait for Sleep" (seems

I think that if you're a TRUE DT fan, you need to enjoy and respect all of
their songs. If there's a song you don't like, just keep listening to it,
    and you'll eventually like it.

    As Mark Bredius said:
    > > I never skip any songs on any DT albums :)

I agree with your opinion, as I also never (or hardly ever) skip tracks on
    my CDs.

On an off note, does anyone here ALSO spend hours on end making MIDI files
of DT songs? I'm making one of 6:00 at the moment, and I'll probably post
    it to Under A Cyber Moon ( http://www.prognosis.com/dream/ ).

    Keep jammin'

I was browsing through the Gibraltar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock, and I came upon a couple of quotes about OFB that I thought were pretty ironic, given the current discussion about the "commercialism" of FII. To wit:

Quote 1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- >I eagerly awaited {**********} ... even managed to get a copy in the UK before >the UK release. I was *very* disappointed. There are some really terrible MTV >tracks and I threw my CD away in disgust (honestly). They have, if only >partially for now, sold out big time. This is ironic given >how the first album was dedicated to a warning about selling out! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---

Quote 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------ >When comparing them to other 90's progressive acts, they remind me of Djam Karet >the most (not in style or sound though) because they have incredible potential >but lukewarm delivery. Bands like Nuova Era, Episode, and Ozric Tentacles have an >edge up on these guys and I feel that Dream Theater is never going to live up to >their potential until they scrap the desire to be successful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------

And the album both these people were referring to as being too commercial, too pop, and too much of a "sellout?"............

    Images And Words

Kind of points out to me the absurity of *anyone* claiming to know the band's motivations for recording the music they do. _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________ E-Mail: psull@ici.net WWW: http://www.ici.net/cust_pages/psull/psull.html IRC: DDictator ICQ: 2049374 ______________________________________________________ It's not hard to meet expenses, they're everywhere.

A true DT fan does NOT have to like every song they put out. That is just a fan following their favorite band blindly. There is such a thing as good DT songs and bad (albeit few) DT songs. "Anna Lee" is ok, but I haven't listened to it in about two months. And even if I listen to it over and over again from this point on, I am sure that I won't like it any more than I do now.

I really like Dereks sound because its really unique. Its like he's shifting between a guitar and a moog sound, and it comes through with so much balls. Kevin had a more traditional sound, which i dig too, but i always go for the more innovative stuff:)

Derek can pull off all those unison solos (Metropolis, TTT, etc) perfectly live. And you know JLMB? The part where the keys and guitar alternate in the L and R speakers? Live, they play that in unison. And i dont know on keyboard, but on guitar that is a bitch to play. Other than that there arent any parts that need doubling...the songs are different.

Hello! I want to comment about the skipping of songs, which seems to be controversial, but I don't know why. I treat a recording as a whole piece. To skip a song would mean to delete an important part of the recording. I listen to classical music too, and though they're 'somewhat' different (I really think they're very similar in structure) I think it would be inappropriate to skip a part of a concerto or a symphony. On the other hand, technology lets you skip or repeat a song, which not necessarily has to relate to the rest of the album, and that means that a song today might be the equivalent to a concerto or a symphony 150 years ago. I accept that it is a possibility, but I choose to not alter the order or the content of a CD. If I like it, I like it. If I don't, I don't. Fortunately, I enjoy every Dream Theatre song, so I don't have to skip. Neither do I like to play a CD randomly. The order of a CD was given in an ‘as is' basis and I would not alter it. It was meant to be had like it is. Please don't insult me. It is my point of view! In the case of Yes (my favorite band), I choose to fully listen to all of their albums with the exception of ‘90125', ‘Big Generator' and ‘Talk' (what a coincidence: the albums with Trevor- I can't speak his name!-Raven-er sorry, Rabin), and I do skip the songs by Rabin in the Union album, that's the only exception!
