Wanker's Corner, NY(AP): While on tour with his band Dream Theater, things
seem to have taken a turn for the worse for bassist John Myung. It was
revealed today at a press conference that he does indeed have a substance
abuse problem. The meek and normally quiet Mr. Myung was breathless and
experiencing the "shakes" as he openly admitted in front of this reporter
that he has a terrible addiction to underarm deoderant. He states that
while he started off quite harmlessly with Right Guard, he eventually began
using more and more until it couldn't satisfy his needs anymore, when he
    began using Old Spice.

Not even fellow band members were aware of the problem for quite some
time. "I just thought he was a very hygenic person," states, guitarist John
Petrucci. "I never would have believed that he had this problem." Fellow
drummer Mike Portnoy states, " I remember walking into the bathroom and
seeing him with that bottle of Preffered Stock. It took me 5 minutes to
wrestle it from him! That dude's a strong [expletive]. After that, we
started taking his habit more seriously."

Mr. Myung has declared that he will continue to tour with Dream Theater
despite his problem. "My first step was to admit the problem. My second
step is to find an alternative to my habit," he stated. "For years I was a
slave to anti-perspirants, and have heard that people are weening away from
them through shaving cream therapy. I'm anticipating trying this method
myself to rid myself of the torture forever." Mr. Myung also stated that
after finishing the tour later this year he will enter a deoderant
rehabilitation clinic so that he can go back to living a normal life.

    This is Washburn Ecksthrey reporting.

Yes, Steve, this is definitely a place for opinions, as you say,
YOUR OWN opinions. It is my understanding that you said:

    >> > It a shame though, that after
    >> > three years or so of waiting for this new album to come out we, the
    >> > dedicated fans, were only allowed 20 or 30 minutes of bliss on a 78
    >> > minute album.

"We the dedicated fans" implies that you are speaking on my behalf, since
I am a dedicated fan who eats, lives, and breathes DT.

I am totally behind your right to post your opinion here 100%, but it
has to work both ways friend. If you can post that you think we were
only given 20-30 minutes of bliss, I can post that I think you're
wrong. ESPECIALLY if you plan on speaking on "our" behalf.

My response was not to flame or get you uptight, it was to make sure
that even though some dedicated fans feel the way you do, it is known that
some of us feel differently. Thats all. We are both excersizing our right
    to be opinionated.

Remember Steve, if you post a strong opinion like that, you cant expect
me or anyone else to sit here and read it and not reply with our own
thoughts and opinions. I don't think you should ever be "censored" from
saying what you really think in here, but you need to also accept
the fact that it's going to generate a response when you say it on "our"
    behalf.

    >Like I said, the
    >talent is still there, it's juste the structural complexity of the songs
    >I miss.

We never argued that, because you may very well be right. I think that
its *very* clear that Graham and I reacted to something else you said.

Bottom line is, I respect your stance on the CD, but I disagree.

FII - 78 minutes of great stuff for some, 20-30 minutes for others :)
My deepest sympathy to the latter :)

Hello all! I was pleasantly surprised to find my Fall/Winter fan club
package in the mailbox today. Last year I didn't get the Christmas CD
until the very end of January, so I certainly didn't expect it to arrive
    so soon this year.

Highlights: Ian Thornley (vocals & lead guitar of Big Wreck) tearing it up on
the geetar. I was severely impressed with all the effortless nuances he had
incorporated into his style that I still can't do after five years of
practicing specifically those techniques. He was like buttah. All I could
estimate was that the people who were heckling the band had never actually
    played instruments before.

Portnoy's blue whale impressions. The spotlights were sizzling and steaming
something fierce after getting blasted from his spoutings. He could sit in
    with Gwar.

Petrucci's Hendrix solo. DT went through a few bars of that song in which Mr.
Hendrix discusses chopping down a mountain with the edge of his hand.

Someone waiting for the break after LaBrie said "This is off of Falling Into
Infinity..." to shout "AFTERLIFE!!" and toss James' concentration out the
door. Portnoy and Petrucci were noteably shaken, while Myung burst out
laughing and broke his bass across Derek's Korg setup... Well part of that
    didn't happen, but so what...

Lowlights: The freaky freaky woman who was rubbing her body against the men in
the front row in an attempt to make them submit to her charms and give up
their railing spaces. I couldn't tell if she had bodyguards ready to kill the
first man to return her passion, so I cautiously watched and waited. She
offered one guy in the front some money, but his will was of iron and he was
not tempted. James swooped his mic-stand out over the crowd for the "don't
tell me" section of "Lie" and Succubus grabbed the mic with both hands and
tried to yank it down into the audience. I think she thought it was something
else. This caused James to switch into Full Battle Mode, looking straight at
the girl with his eyes on fire and saying, "Let go of the mic. GIVE ME THE
FUCKING--" then she let go. I think if she had started to cry it would have
    made James even more furious.

The smoke. Just what the world needs inside a roasting, sweat-drenched, CO2
chamber - MORE SMOKE!! JUST LET ME BREATHE!!

The heat. Leave it to Mother Nature to bring the temperatures up into the high
60s on January 3rd for a nice sultry evening with DT.

    WHO AM I???

Picture if you will a man standing with his arms outstretched to either side,
his feet planted firmly on the ground, mirroring the human form of Leonardo
DaVinci's drawing entitled "Man." Then imagine the torso of this man's body
moving around independently from the other limbs, floating and squirming like
a possessed host with an angry demon inside trying to wrestle its way out.

Picture the torso straining towards the ceiling, a torso covered in exquisite
silky fabrics the likes of which only a sultan, or Liberace, would ever dare
to wear. Picture the wavering chest and stomach becoming 3-D and lunging out
at you, struggling to tear away from their grounded prison of arms and legs.

Everytime this man locks eyes with you and his tongue flickers like a hypnotic
cobra, you are prompted by an invisible force to turn your head and recite a
Hail Mary... Except this time when prayer doesn't stop him from devouring you
whole, Ripley and Vasquez aren't in the moshpit to save your ass when Writhing
Man's chest bursts open from the birth of an alien lifeform...

(Hint: the fluid, unpredictable motions of this man bear a strong resemblance
to the path of hot wax inside a lava lamp.)

I realize that "posting fan club information to the Jam might unfairly

The Christmas pack is wonderful, by the way. The CD liners are extremely well done, and there's lots of cool stuff in the fanzine. Thanks to everyone involved.

I'll also take this opportunity to reiterate my request for a recording of the London show last month. Please!!!!!

Read an interesting comment by Mr. Jordan Rudess recently about keyboard sound. His philosophy on attaining a sound consists of coming up with a standard patch or whatever and then tweaking it intensely until he gets what he wants. Also, he stated he does not like imitating other instruments with his sound, i.e. guitars, bass, etc. The reason I post this is because of Derek's sound (basically the sounds on Lines, and JLMB which I consider the epitome of Derek sound) so much like a guitar. I was curious as to what people on this list prefer. Something more keyboard sounding, closer to ELP or the of the keys imitating another instrument like Derek. Just a thought.

I've seen a lot of people ragging about "You Not Me", how pop it is, the whole Desmond Child bitch-fest, etc... I was just wondering what people think about the live version. I saw them do it at the JAXX show and they really kicked it out. DT has done a pretty damn good job at putting out quality music and if they have to put out a few "less than Metropolis-Type tunes" now and then, then so be it. Personally I think "Space Dye Vest" blows dog, but I dont go on and on ragging about it. DT makes their living as musicians. They are professionals, and they know what they are doing. If you disagree with songs pop songs like YNM or HY, then go find another band to listen to. DT won't be around forever so why not appreciate them why they are. Get off their friggin backs and be true fans and appreciate what they do.

Don't bother flaming unless it's intelligent.

I saw DT at the Chance in Poughkeepsie on November 25, and Big Wreck wasn't too bad. I found myself pissed at them the whole time cause I wanted them off the damn stage so DT could come out and do their thing. I saw the show again last Sunday at the Vanderbuilt....Big Difference! I was pissed at first because BW was doing the same act in the same order, and I found myself just trying to get through it again. But all of a sudden, they started to play their last song, and out onto the stage comes Mike, John (Petrucci), and Derek. They started playing some Hendrix and a little DT with the boys of BW and it really kicked some ass. I don't know how they were at the other shows, but this was they're last show with DT, and, needless to say, I was impressed... By the way, I guess I figured out how to jam on the ytse... later Browneye

    --- Received from HQ02MEMO.TC6NSMM MCCURDY, SHAWN 01-07-98 08:05

    Just some random thoughts:

    Fanclub CD -

Finally! Received it yesterday (1/6/98) and found it quite entertaining! Its interesting to see how many different things (sounds and instruments) go into just one song. I can't imagine how long it took MP to sift through all of his DAT's to compile this 76.07 minutes of CD. I want to take this time to thank all who were involved in producing this CD, the band for the hilarious out-takes (the Del-Fuvio Monks rule :) , and finally Mike Portnoy for "taking the time" to compile this great look back at what went into FII. Many thanks!!!

    You Not Me -

I guess that I'm one of the few people who don't have a problem with DT doing "Commercial" music. Popular music use to have at least some talent required to produce, but in this age the quality has hit an all time low. (If I hear "Walking on the sun" by Smash Mouth one more time I'm gonna puke.) DT still show their talent in the more simplified songs and there are so few bands today that can make just a good, simple Rock song. I like both versions of YNM as well as all the b-sides off FII (If I could only get them all on one CD instead of scattered about.) But, that's just my opinion and as I am told at work "That not worth very much."

    KM vs. DS -

I was trying to stay out of this argument so I'll keep it simply: I like them both. Each has a unique style and the band as a whole has benefited from their input. Enough said. Derek has an interesting stage presents and its comical to watch him and Mike interact through the whole show!

    Drum Pedals -

Currently I am using DW 5002T double pedal and I would have to say that I am satisfied with them. I hope soon to upgrade to a full second bass drum at which time I am planning to switch to Tama's Iron Cobra pedals. Any drummers have any experience with the HP80P "Rolling Glide" or the HP90P "Power Glide" and advantages/disadvantages of one over the other?

Heel up or heel down -

Definitely heel up. Although lately I've noticed that my right foot is lagging a little low. I have the bad habit of not paying close enough attention to technic at times and then I wonder why I get frustrated when things aren't running smooth. Oh well, practice...

    1998? -

Looks good so far. The fanclub CD arrived, I just ordered my drum rack and five more cymbals (you can never have too many cymbals:), the new Mike Bahr CD "Welcome to the Wasteland" is due out soon, and DT is coming back to the States in the summer. Life, for now, is good. Take care everybody.

No preferences here. Both can be good, both can be bad. I particularly like the middle passage on Metropolis, where it is hard to say what is keyboard and what is guitar, while I also like the keys only part of "Wait for Sleep" (seems quite a long time since someone mentioned this song, huh? Maybe people don't like it very much...)

I have probabably said this here already (as I'm sure a lot of other people have already), but I think that, while Kevin Moore influenced Dream Theater towards a more classical sound, Derek leads the band to the jazzy part of the music spectrum. His way of achieving this is, IMO, doing the keyboard-sounds-like-guitar thing and I have no problems with this.

I'd like to see more comments on this here...

    Hi all

I hope you all had a good winter solistice, and are now all strong, = healthy and fresh for yet another year of flaming, in-fighting and = general bitching.

Have the results of the great "1997 album of the year" poll been posted yet? I seem to remember it was Syrinx (possibly) who was doing this. I may have missed it, since my 'down' key has been taking another good bashing recently. Could some kind soul mail them to me if they have = already appeared?

Things I hope will happen this year: new releases by Superior and Angra would be nice, as would another album by Anathema.

Things I fear will happen this year: Fates Warning will release a 6 CD = boxed set with just one 'song' called "A Pleasant Shade Of Boredom".

Warning: skiing is bad for the health of minor wanna-be politicians.

Hi ytsejammers! I absolutely agree with this opinion. I think, when KM was a member of DT I heard his keyboards in every track. I can't say the same about Derek. There are many moments on ACOS and FII where I can't hear keys. I can understand it if I talk about ACOS, because Derek was a new member of DT, but after two years, when the new album is released, I can't understand this weak work of keyboard there. KM was much better, he could play the same passages with JP in the same time. I don't know if Derek can do it like KM, probably YES,because he is a good player too, but he doesn't do it! Maybe this is the reason of critical opnions about him. Regards, Mike
