I recently downloaded the Living In Fear track from Chaos Theory. I must
say that I am very impressed. It's like a I&W-DT/APSOG-FW/Superior
feel all wrapped into one. The vocals are done very well and fit the
music perfectly. Just one question....when is the CD from these guys
going to be released? I know it's supposed to be on Magna Carta's label,
but I checked their web page and saw nothing relating to Chaos Theory.

If anyone has any info on these guys, please e-mail me. I would like to
    purchase their album ASAP.

    Thanks,

    Jeff E.

Actually , whatever it is, I need to know how to change my subscription to

Can anyone tell me if this is available in the U.S.? I'm in the process of compiling a CD library of DT-influenced progressive metal, and this sounds essential. Thanks to all, especially those who have previously helped me.

Personally I like Dereks sound and VERY much appreciate the fact that he doesn't follow JP around all the time. Of course his sound is going to be different, he's not a clone, has everyone forgotten his work on ACOS ? He played with the style that the music led him to. If they made another IAW or Awake, I think he'd be on par w/ Kevin, different, but as good. Just enjoy it and stop whining, DT couldn't have done any better, after all, they didn't kick Kevin out, he left. If DS really sucks when Met2 comes out, I'll switch camps, but I don't see that happening.

Hey all, This interview gave me an idea...

Well, I guess that's straight from the horses mouth. It all boils down to responsibility and the need for cash. Understandable. It's not fun being a starving artist.

Any solutions out there? Maybe we can find them some day jobs that pay enough so that they can make the music they want, without any sales pressures.

How much money does it take? Most people can live pretty well these days on $100K/year. That's about $50 per hour for a full year's work. How long would it take for the guys to write and record some kick-ass progressive music? They're pretty fast. Maybe somebody out there with a love of progressive DT and equipment could donate some studio time and disc making services. And we could all chip in to pay them $100 an hour to crank out some killer tunes! Ytsejam could become the Ytse-patron! F**k the mainstream! F**k the music business! Let's get some music that's more art, less business.

    * Then again, rumor has it that Magna Carta might do this for you. They just don't pay enough...

Hey, anyone wanna post that e-mail to the Hanson/Spice Girls/any other so-called popular band's mailing list? I'd bet they'd get a real kick out of being called asses... especially by a dj!

To the California 'jammer who still doesn't have their Christmas CD: We still don't have ours, and Ken sent off our dues 2 months ago. I'm getting a little impatient, and I'm really excited to see what this Fanzine is all about. Oh, yeah, we're in Texas.

Re: Trad style vs. matched grip Man, I haven't played drums in YEARS, but I always had a hard time with trad style. I learned matched grip in jr. high, and I don't think I was taught proper trad grip technique. I even played brushes with matched grip. But now that you mention it, I think I'll try my hands at brushes again. :)

One more thing... I have improved my Web site slightly (made it flow a little better, fixed the counters, etc.), so I invite you all to visit it, and especially check out the Help DT Get Airplay page. There's been a lot of talk on the 'jam about radio stations that I just don't have on my page, so if you notice your local station is missing, please let me know!

    Happy 'jamming! -Nicole/Kirby

While it is true that the masses are indeed asses, the reason that this is the case is because the Radio/Video machine has been force-feeding their listeners Radio "goo-goo" for too long. They have dumbed down their audience, and now that is all these poor people know because they haven't been shown anything better. But the solution isn't to keep feeding them tripe. The solution is to off them and alternative (sorry ;-)) to the marshmallow substance of "Pop". If they would actually devote some time to exposing their listeners to something a bit more stimulating, they might find that people actually like something that takes some intelligence to compose and play. At least that's how I see it. I may be wrong...

About the only good thing about waiting forever for the techs to figure out whatever they needed to figure out to get Big Wreck going was some of the music being piped in. I'm curious if anyone might be able to identify what we were listening to, particulary the tracks that first played when they first let us in and that were subsequently repeated when they put the tape back in an hour later.

A couple quick comments on the show - this was the third DT show I'd seen, the other two being in Baltimore a number of years back. This was definitely as good as I've ever seen DT.

    A couple of negatives:

    1) Mike's loogies are totally unneccesary - suppose he hit one of his band mates with one ! 2) Derek's playing certainly is excellent, but it seems to me that he tends to preen and wave after popping out some simple chords ? It just looks silly to me - the only thing I can compare it to would be Maynard Ferguson's reaction when he pulls off another amazing high note. However, I think Maynard as to go through some more work to pull the note off, and I don't mind the extra flair. In Derek's case, it's distracting.

    Thanks -- Martin

ack! I assume by "that song on Steve Vai's Fire Garden where all the peo= ple are singing" you are talking about the "hey, hi, we're racing with time thing." I thought it sounded way to hip hop too, but it totally grows on ya. On one my basketball bus trips (huh, huh he's a jock) I managed to convert 2 people to the light that is Steve Vai on one trip (ok it was a really long trip, but still). The song that did it was this 2nd to last s= ong because of it's drum beat. they were like "whoa cool dude" and so they grabbed it and listened to the rest of it. Works kinda like Hollow Years does for DT converts.

In other news, I agree that the fanzine should be the reason you sub to t= he fan club. If not for the fanzine, We never would have heard the famous words that will surely go down as being one of the most profound quotes o= f our generation, spoken by KJLB himself, "Radio can go and suck my ass." thankyouverymuch.

On Friday, in addition to getting to see DT at the Webster Theater in Hartford, I also got the following CD's

    Japanese FII Hallow Years Single

The Japanese FII CD has the little mini disc with the take away my pain demo, and Speak to Me demo. The TAMP demo is MUCH better than the album version - little sadder, and without that Caribbean feel to it. Speak to Me is a VERY cool song, I like it MORE AND MORE with each listen. If you don't have the Japanese FII, which seems to be in very short supply these days, I managed to get mine at JART music (http://www.jartmusic.com).

Also, Since the Japanese FII is in short supply. I could make an MP3 file of SPEAK to ME, but I don't have any space on my Web Page to post it. Anyone interested in putting it on their page? - Email me privately.

The Hallow Years Single is also pretty good. The demo version of YNM is (as many have already said) MUCH better than the album version, and TWIUTB is as D-man said "The Way It Ought To Be"

Before the Show: Met Skadz (Nice Fella, very friendly, and just like he says he does not bite!!!), D-Man(whom I have met before, backstage at the First Toad's place Gig), and Mike Bradley(From my hometown).

The stuff playing on the PA before the show was very cool, if this is liquid tension experiment, then I cant wait to get his stuff. Very Cool.

Big Wreck: Not a bad Band, but they don't really do anything for me. I would much rather see Rudess/Morgenstein, or Fates Open than these guys. At one point, they played the opening riff to "Smoke on the Water" and then stopped when the singer said that he didn't know the song. Later, during DT's Encore, DT played it - I am not sure if that was to "Show Up" Big wreck, or what.

Between BW and DT, they played a lot of the extra stuff from FII. Cover My Eyes is really great. TWIUTB is Excellent - if you dont have the Hallow Years Single - Get it for this one.

The Set - Dream Theater was at their BEST. I have seen them 9 times, and this was BY FAR the best show yet.

James' voice was the best I have ever heard him (although the sound guys could not get ANYTHING right with his sound levels, at the beginning of the show, his volume level was too low, and then about halfway through it was WAY TOO loud).

John Myung just keeps getting better and better - he is a MONSTER on the base.

Derek was very good, and seems to be fitting into the band more and more each time I see them. The new "Style" of keyboards he has been adding to the performances is EXACTLY what DT is presently in need of.

John Petrucci was Flawless(as always), and he makes everything look so easy.

Mike Portnoy - as always was excellent - great stage presence.

Highlights of the show included - Mike Portnoy singing during JLMB. - The "New and Improved YTSEJAM - this is definitely one of my favorite LIVE DT songs, and the new version is SOOOO SICK. You can not belive how FAST they are playing during the middle sections. I REALLY wish that they would re-record this song!!! - They played UAGM - my other favorite live DT song - They played Smoke on the Water during the encore, after the Big Wreck guy during his set said that he could not play it. I don't know if they had planned in advance to play it, or that was just something that they had decided after hearing Big Wreck say that they could not play it.

The Webster Theater was an excellent place to watch DT. No matter where I stood, I could see the band clearly. This is much better than the standard bar location where I always end up standing behind a Basketball Team. The crowd size was Quite large, I wonder how many people were there? Also, our local rock radio station, WCCC was there. Maybe DT will get some coverage from this event. Anyone from the Hartford Area heard any comments on WCCC from the Show????

Anyway that my take on the Hartford Show. They said that they would be back in the Spring. Maybe I will meet more of you guys at that show.

Hi Jammers. May I enter the session? Thanks. First of all: thanks for the concert reviews and the album reviews. I have never had the chance to see Dream Theatre in Australia (poor me), so it's more o less educational to read those reviews. I enjoy the CD reviews as they keep me informed and you get the chance to hear about new bands. Just one thing guys, can you write the complete names of the things you're talking about, at least the first time you name them in the message? IE: What does IMO mean? All those accronyms that you keep writing make it VDTU (very difficult to understand) at first. I too want to contribute to the discussions hence: >Hey Jammers! >I've heard so much about Marrilion here, I want to buy an album of >theirs. >Can anyone reccommend a good one to start with? Thanks ! by Art Well, I can tell you, anything you buy from Marillion is quite enjoyable. They've had 2 periods, defined mostly by the singer (they've had two), which have been very different in their styles, but era quite good in their own way. Someone in a previous session had said 'Misplaced Childhood' is a good album to start. I couldn't agree more, but it's certainly not the only one. Marillion often record concept albums, and to me, they are fantastic. I would also recommend 'Clutching at Straws' and 'Brave'. One of their best recordings is 'Script for a Jester's Tear' recorded quite a while ago. I've watched a video of a live concert by this Marillion with Fish, and he was very theatrical, influenced by Peter Gabriel when he was with Genesis. If you want to go any further, try IQ, another british group which has not been so successful as Marillion, but have a similar style. These bands are called Genesis-clones. Some critics have pointed that if Genesis were doing serious music, they would sound like IQ. By these guys, I can suggest 'Subterranea', a double CD, which is extremely good. This is their latest stuff. Never the less, if you want to bay a single CD, try 'J'ai Pollette D'Arnu' (this doesn't mean anything in French), which contains a collection of rarities and live songs. Try 'The Wake', a CD which is beleived to be conceptual, with dark lyrics about death (not in a stupid way, but in a more poetic manner). Have fun. Bernardo Pulgar Banner: No Banner!
