While it's still fresh in my mind (and ringing in my ears), I thought I'd
share some thoughts about th DT show last night in Hartford:

    * KJLB and the Mystery Microphone: About 3 or 4 times during the first half
of the show, KJLB came back to the stage after an instrumental passage and
his mic wasn't working. I don't think it was the mic itself, it seemed to
be that the sound guy had dropped the level and forgotten to bring it back
up or something. Labrie went postal the last time, throwing the mic stand
and megaphone across the stage. He didn't let that affect the rest of his
    performance, though. Very professional.

    * Mike Portnoy's vocals: Both Mike and JP were doing backup vocals, and it
adds a lot to the songs. Mike got the added plus of getting to sing part of
JLMB while Labrie was ripping the sound guy a new one during the
aforementioned incident. Mike didn't sound half bad either. He also mouthed
the "Please don't go!" during ACOS.

    * John Petrucci as The Guitar Master: It's just so intimidating to watch
this guy play sometimes. He makes playing look so damn effortless. I'm used
to guitarists on stage contorting and doing all kinds o' funky shit during
solos. JP just stares out over the crowd with the look of "I AM the guitar.
You will all bow before me, as you are not worthy."

    * Derek's histrionics: On the other end of the spectrum, we had Derek. I
just don't know about that guy. :) I really want to like him. I love his
studio work with the band, but his live presentation is just so
over-the-top that I can't help but wonder about "style over substance". I
feel like a great musician doesn't have to try and grab my attention with
flash other than of the musical kind.

    * The Silent Man smiled!: Yes sirree! During ACOS (I think) he played a
little music-box riff as a solo. I was laughing myself, and I look onstage,
and he's backed up by the drum riser and smiling (I think at MP). It seemed
as though everyone was enjoying themselves.

All-in-all, a great performance. The only thing that would have topped it
for me would have been if they had played one of the 3 songs I was
listening for: (1)Nightmare Cinema, (2)Scarred, or (3)Trial Of Tears. Oh
well, I guess it just gives me something to look forward to at the next
    show. :)

I was wondering: do any of you Ytsejammers play Quake or Quake II? I have both, and if there are enough of you (at least 4, preferably 5 or more) with stable Internet connections (28.8 ISP or better. No AOL, because the ping times are awful. I got a ping time of over 3000 milliseconds to a server only 70 miles away.) we could form a clan Ytsejam, or something vaguely equivalent. If you're interested, e-mail me privately.

well, i am glad to hear the rest of the hartford show was cool...i
unfortunately had to leave after big wreck ended because i blacked out(!!!). i
was up against the stage right in front of where the sound guys were setting
up petrucci's stuff, and all of a sudden, i felt very ill and my vision went
starry and i couldnt see a thing for a minute or two. suffice it to say that
the experience was frightening enough to make me leave, which i ***NEVER***
    thought would happen. :o(
i just wanted to say thanks, tho, to the people who were kinda helpful to me
and got me a coke and all.... i appreciated it. i just wish i could have
stayed - having a spot in the front row is not something i enjoyed giving up.
    thanks again, guys-

I am looking for a good CD online shop, not in the vein of CDNOW however
Rather, I am seeking a wholesaler oriented dealer, preferrably one
specializing in re-releases where I might purchase bulk quantities of Deep
Purple's Machine Head and similar items

Sorry if this has been posted before. In the current issue of "Metal Edge" there is a nice one page
write up on DT. If features about 7 color phots, including the guys playing each others instruments
during the "Nightmare Cinema" performance. Talks a little bit about FII and the tour with Big Wreck.
    Check it out.

All you space-rockers on the list: put down what you're doing and put
in an order for the Ozrics' new one, Curious Corn, if you haven't already.
This album is a fabulous blend of synth wizardry, guitar sorcery, and ambient
mood-making magic. I think the Ozrics have really hit the nail on the head
this time, inviting us on an auditory voyage into their space. For those of
you who have been following their last few albums, this one will seem like
a step in the right direction in their musical evolution, and for the
uninitiated this album would make a great introduction to what the Ozrics are
    all about. Definitely a keeper.

For some unknown reason, when cataloging my CDs it became a bit embarrassingly obvious that I somehow became in the possession of two copies of Peter Gabriel's double live CD "Secret World Live". Must mean that I really like it (or that the synapses between those few remaining braincells aren't firing too often). It is decent. Double CD for $8 US postpaid.

    Later, Mark Metzger mmetzger@bostech.com

DT's next project is to be a concept album based loosely on South Park. Here's the breakdown of the characters:

Stan Marsh <the cute one>: John Petrucci...quiet, introspective

    Kiel Broslowski: Derek Sherinian...sometime joker

Kenny McCormack <the quiet one>: John Myung <as if you couldn't see that coming>

And what band he plays in? He is supposed to be a hell of a guitarist.

Well, saw DT for the 9th time last night in Hartford, and this might just have been the best show I have ever saw. They were on last night. The set list was (at least close to) what Tim Lodge posted, and there were a few nice surprises... You Not Me being one of them. This song sounds great live! I also think that New Millenium is an amazing song live, if possible, even better than on FII. It was interesting when LaBrie had mic problems during JLMB, and Mike took over while James went on over to have a chat. Mike was, as always, Animal on drums. During the ACOS part, Mike also appeared to scream "Please don't go" as did those of us in the crowd. The added portion of Ytsejam (the "fasten your seatbelts" portion) is pretty cool... very _FAST_. Metropolis was amazing, with 2 added jams in the middle (the "standard" one dating back to at least the Fix shows, as well as a cover tune. Metropolis really does kick some major ass. Peruvian Skies was also very cool. The electric version of Silen Man was very cool, better than I remember.

Was also cool to get together with some other Jammers... Merlo was back in New England, and was cool as always. I was standing with Sarah, Erica, Skadz, Merlow, Pat Sullivan, and a few others during the show. It was cool, b/c Skadz & Merlo decided to stop _anyone_ who started to mosh in our area, going into the pit, and pulling people out... very cool. Lets see... what else... Not a whole lot, again, great to see everyone again. Can't wait for DT to come back from Europe/Japan for show number 10.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to let y'all know I heard YNM on the radio earlier today (of all songs). I've also heard Hollow Years and Burning My Soul SEVERAL times in the past month or so . . . this station ("The Bear", 97.9 - northeast PA) seems to be into DT, I've requested BMS and HY once or twice since I got the album (I know, I should be calling more often :), and they told me they'd play DT just as if I had requested the new Pearl Jam. Hopefully maybe YNM will fall into regular rotation?? I think it's really cool that DT finally seem to be making some waves commercially. Let's hope it keeps up.
