I have to second Al on this one... this album kicks serious ass! These
guys really have their act together musically - both on record and live
(I've seen them 3 times and never been disappointed). For those of you on
the list with tendencies toward the Faith No More / Primus / Chili Peppers
end of the spectrum, you owe it to yourself to get this album.

Yep, it seems that people don't like "No Prayer for the Dying" at
    all, right?

I never skip anything on "Images and Words"... On the other hand,
IMO, "Awake" is composed of songs 4,5,6,7,8,10 and 11. The rest is just,
how can I say, not important for me.

(Not too bad for someone who didn't care about "Awake" at all,
    until 2 months ago).

I never skip any songs on any DT albums :) Until recently I wasn't into Awake too, now after many listens I love it, even my once 'worst DT song 'Lie' I now love. IMO there isn't a struck match between any of the DT releases, they all are great.

You guys probably know this already, but in case you don't, the new Metal Edge has a bunch of DT live pix in there, as well as some pictures of Nightmare Cinema with Portnoy going apeshit on the bass...pretty funny.

Can somebody e-mail me the songs that are on the X-Mas Fan Club CD. I was a dumbass and didn't subscribe to fan club, so now I guess I'll have to remain in suspense. Must run now before I miss the Spice Girls on Dick Clark's show.....(kidding).

    Hi, 'jammers,

Could you people that have that Magazine with the Petrucci interview transcribe here what are his top 10 albums? I read somewhere (don't remember if it was on Vince's post) that he even had one Metallica album in his "best albums" list.

Just very curious and Happy New Year, Roger...

P.S.: Just got one CD with the following tracklist:

1 - "Where Are You Now" (with vocals, played live, with Petrucci's introduction, seems similar to "Guitar Talkin's" version); 2 - "Hollow Years" (Demo, different lyrics, some different parts of the solo); 3 - "Cover My Eyes" (Demo, we already know this -- sligthly better sound quality than the one found on the Web); 4 - "Burning My Soul" (Demo, older version, includes the parts of "Hell's Kitchen", as in those "Fix for '96" bootlegs and also a very strange LaBrie's vocal performance); 5 - "Lines in the Sand" (Demo, also, half of the song only (the first half, then it fades away), VERY unfortunately, with different vocal harmonies); 6 - "Just Let Me Breath" (Demo, very similar to the one on FII); 7 - "Raise the Knife" (recording from some clinic, instrumental, similar to "Guitar Talkin'", with *no* background noise/tape hiss).

    Humm, overall sound quality: A-/B+.

It is called "FII Demos" (quite creative, huh?).

P.S.2: Yesterday, I saw a movie called "Cactus Flower", an old movie, with Ingrid Bergman, the actress from "Casablanca" (how she was beautiful). It's very interesting. If you have the chance of seeing it, do it. BTW, could someone recommend me some horror movies, with the same quality (or, better, although I don't think it is possible) of Stanley Kubrik's "The Shining"??? Unfortunately, if a horror movie isn't well done, it turns out to be comedy. :-)

Arg!!!! This guy is gone for months and he just comes right back with this short little message and gets an EOJ!!!! He must have high friends in places.

In other news, I placed my super-mega-mail-order with the Laser's Edge and I have 7 of the best new prog and metal and everything in between coming soon. Keep your eyes peeled for my reviews on the latest cds by...

Vanden Plas The Quiet Room Spock's Beard Symphony X Finneus Gauge Ayreon Digital Ruin

..all for $98 including shipping. Considering most of these are imports and at most mail order places you'd be paying $20+ for each you can do the math and figure out that Laser's Edge is the best place for mail ordering prog.

And as far as DT content is concerned, I've managed to convert 5 of my friends in my high school. However I'm not so sure this is a good thing. One of the kids is a Metallica-freak and whenever he sings along with songs he does it in a Hetfield voice. So, imagine Another Day sung like James Hetfield and this is what I have to put up with when I'm listening to DT around this kid.

Stop being so harsh. Just because the cd is free doesn't mean you have to love it! A cd does not get one bit better from being free. Hey there, and Happy '98. My name's Brian. I'm a new subscriber to the 'jam and this is my 1st post. Here's a little bit about me:

I'm 17, a HUGE fan for over 2 years now . . . I play the guitar and am currently looking to form a prog-metal band (I'm in eastern PA, about an hour north of Allentown - soon to be moving about 45 min. closer; if anyone's interested or knows anyone who might be e-mail me). Other bands I'm really into include: Fates Warning, Rush, Queensryche, Metallica, Megadeth, King's X, Savatage, Testament, Yngwie, Vai, Satch, Fear Factory, Death, Meshuggah, Pink Floyd, Tori Amos, Blind Melon (J/K!!!!) ;0), Pantera, Machine Head, Journey, Maiden/Dickinson, and MANY more. I'm always looking for new bands to get into, especially prog, so if anyone has some suggestions for a DT fanatic, please e-mail me.

That's all for now. Take care, and HFNY!

Hi, All. Ok, now that I'm on vacation, I decided to do something that I've been thinking of doing for at least 3 months: transferring some of my rarest recordings from tape to CD. I started doing this with a rare Metallica show that I have and it gave me a lot of work (transferring the tape to hard disk, making 2 very, very large WAV files, doing some sound edition, removal of tape hiss, cutting these WAV files in smaller wav files that would be meant to be the tracks etc). Even though I did this for my own personal use, I'd like to give it a "professional" look and feel. Right now I'm doing the cover and I'm including some explanatory liner notes. Since my English is far from perfect (I can barely express myself in Portuguese, let alone in English :-) ), I'd appreciate if you people could send me some corrections to the text below (I'd also appreciate if you could make any comments such as if it is clear enough or if it should be "put on a trash can" :-) ): <liner notes>

    Metallica - Trapped in Paris

This is a very special recording of a memorable performance done by Metallica on Paris, France, 11/18/84.

This performance was carefully transferred from a third generation analog tape to a CD-R and a lot of work (sound edition) was done in order to achieve acceptable sound quality and also preserve this rare material. Among the editions that were done are: the sound level of the recording was raised and all the tape hiss was removed. It is amazing to compare the original tape and the final CD: very hard to say that both are from the same show, quality-wise speaking.

What makes this 2 CD set so special is that this performance contains a lot of unique elements: it was Kirk's birthday, it includes the only recorded performance of "Trapped Under Ice" (a song that was only performed live twice) and also features an entire performance of the song "The Call of Ktulu", not very common to find on bootlegs (in fact, it is very hard to find bootlegs from the "Ride the Lightning" tour at all).

It must also be taken into account that at the time of this writing (12/31/97, New Year's Eve), no bootlegs from this show were known or listed in the Metallica Bootleg Discography maintained on the Internet.

I thought that I should also include the tracklist of the CD. It contains the entire performance of the 11/18/84 night: Disc I 1 - Fight Fire with Fire 2 - Ride the Lightning 3 - Phantom Lord 4 - The Four Horsemen 5 - Cliff Solo (Anestesia) 6 - For Whom the Bell Tolls 7 - Trapped Under Ice 8 - The Call of Ktulu 9 - No Remorse 10 - Seek and Destroy 11 - Whiplash Disc II 1 - Creeping Death/Kirk's Solo 2 - Metal Militia 3 - Happy Birthday, Kirk 4 - Jump in the Fire 5 - Motorbreath (bonus tracks, follow) 6 - Sucking My Love 7 - Killing Time 8 - Let it Loose 9 - Hit the Lights 10 - The Mechanix 11 - Motorbreath 12 - Seek and Destroy 13 - Metal Militia 14 - Jump in the Fire 15 - Phantom Lord Tracks 6-8 on the 2nd CD are some old demos, while tracks 9-16 are the complete "No Life 'Til Leather" demos, denoised. I think that it pretty much summarizes the life of Metallica until the "Ride" tour (see the number of songs from both KEA and RtL that are performed on the show). So, if you have any comments on this, I'd be grateful to hear. Also, I can trade for this 2CD set in the future, as I'm dying to have some "Home for the Holidays"/"Fix for '96/'97" shows. Also, to add some DTC, could you please list what were the top 10 Petrucci albums? I heard that it lists one by Metallica... :-) []s, Roger...
