I agree that of the above listed bands, Kansas is the closest to DT.

Well, I would say other than Rush, Kansas is the most guitar driven of
the above bands. My wife's sister who grew up during the height of the
above bands popularity, said on her first listen to DT, that it sounded
    like Kansas...

It really pains me to do this publicly, but it appears that I have little
    choice..

    Mike Bahr..

I've written you multiple times about my Virtual Songs order. I sent the
money in close to a year ago for two sets, totalling $150. The check was
cashed the same week I sent them. My brother and I were listed as #139-140
on your list and all the sets around these were shipped over six weeks ago
according to your updates. I wrote you asking what the deal was and you
said you'd send them out to us ASAP. That was 5 weeks ago. Three weeks
ago I asked again if you could get them to us. Again you promised to get
them to us shortly. Last week I wrote one last time asking for $75 as a
refund for one of the VS orders b/c I already have that show and a couple
of others from the Test For Echo tour and our CDs were nowhere in sight.
My brother still wants to wait for his. I still haven't gotten a response
after 6 days. Please don't tell me you were too busy because you've
obviously been able to keep up with Jams as demonstrated by your arguments
with Chris. I've always been incredibly, IMO, forgiving and patient with
this whole fiasco. All of my emails to you were extremely civil, even tho'
I'm feeling very cheated right now and a bit helpless. This waste of
everyone's time seems to be my last recourse, and I even told you I'd do it
after a few days. I've waited a week and haven't heard anything from you.
Tho' you've always been very professional and helpful in the past, to say
I'm a bit put out with this VS fiasco is stating it very mildly. I
understand your business is very time comsuming, but you've apparently
bitten off more than you can chew. Four to eight weeks is acceptable for
any mail order business - 10 months is not. I'd appreciate, and expect, an
answer - privately, of course. Thank you.

To Jammers: Again, I apologize for this waste of bandwidth, but it was
    100% necessary.

huh? Games are 60 bucks each? oh ok...HERE IS WHAT
I would like to know. Since CD burners are on the rise
etc..etc..can you copy a Sony playstation game and use it?

Well, I don't know the answer to your question concerning copying the games.
However, I would like to point out a few things:

    1. Brand new, blockbuster games (Tomb Raider II, Final Fantasy VII, etc)
    retail for $49.
    2. Many games can be had for less than this - usually the slightly older
ones (but there are many to choose from).
    3. These are relatively low prices for high quality game software (partially
due to the medium of compact disc). Compare this to N64 games which cost
    $59-$79 usually.
    4. Hardware companies like Sony usually operate on a loss in hardware sales
($149 for a Playstation) and make up for that with software sales (not that
I'm crying for Sony - they are kicking ass right now).
    5. Lots of smart, hard working, geeky game developers (and graphic artists)
put in lots of overtime creating these games - they need to be compensated
    via game sales!
    6. Copying software will do precisely what it has done with PC games: drive
the price UP! (Think about it - to make an equivalent return on fewer games
sold, a company has to charge a higher price.)

I'm not the morality police, but I urge anyone with the remotest financial
means to BUY these games. You can also find many of them used for pretty
    good prices.

Now when is that Petrucci-laden pinball game going to be ported to a system
    with a future?!?! damn.

    Roger-

The fill I was refering to is at the end of ACOS about 22:05-22:15. This fill is w/ the drums, but I suppose one could have a gutiar or bass fill also. The fill in ACOS sounds a lot like the one at the end of Limelight, maybe this is what the original question was alluding to?

OK, Jeff Falk gave me the answer I was looking for, and now I need to confirm that this is really the right answer. I believe Steve Stone was the only vocalist officially hired out of the 4 that appear on the widely circulated VOCALIST AUDITION TAPES (excluding James). During the period when DT was doing the instrumental shows, Steve Stone was hired, and actually appeared at one of the instrumental shows to sing ACOS. Supposedly, immediately following that performance, he was fired.

Also, I've heard that John Arch was officially offered the position, but had to turn it down. I don't know if that happened before or after Steve Stone, but either way he was never the vocalist for DT.

To the best of my knowledge, neither Chris Cintron nor John Hendricks were offered the vocalist spot.

For those who said Chris Collins, he preceded Charlie, not James. I believe he was canned before they even changed the name from Majesty to DT.

If anyone knows this information to be incorrect, let me know ASAP. I feel pretty confident about my DT history, but you never know when you could be fed BAD information.

Lastly, I'll be in touch to announce the winners of the other tapes. I haven't compiled who replied first yet. I'll be in touch privately with those eligible winners, and then announce them to the list.

    Later, KAI

Okay, for Roger, when I say a "fill" I mean in non-drumming terms "the drummer doing something other than a repeated beat." That's not the scientific or accurate definition, but explains when drummers get fancy every fourth or eighth bar.

The Neil Peart-style fill happens in ACOS -- 22:04. Ends at 22:14.

I swear I've heard Peart do this, beat for beat, in an older Rush piece (before he discovered electronics, so pre-GUP). If I hadn't loaned out my ESL cd, I'd be combing it right now. I was hoping someone else recognized it. But there's the possibility I'm completely off base.

    Hey guys,

To the guy who said the following with regard to finding good DT tabs...

    > I guess what I'm trying to say, if you want tab, "real tab", then > you should just buy the tab books because you know that they'll be > correct..

    WRONG!

Unfortunately the tab books are just transcribers' best approximations of how a piece is played. The IaW book is good, because Jon Petrucci edited it and I found that the Awake book was okay too, but I've found horrible errors in other books. For example, the book for Extreme's "Pornograffiti" album has a ton of errors. Also, any of you who are into Eric Johnson should know that all the tab books of his music are WAY off. No one has correctly transcribed "Cliffs of Dover" to this day.

In most cases the tab books will give you a great basis to learn the tunes, but they're by no means fool-proof. One of my teachers was a transcriber for Guitar World, so I have sort of an insider's perspective on how this is done.

    Later all!

Well...I know a lot about Kansas and I can say for sure that if DT reminds me of any 70s prog band, it's them! For my money, Kansas rules all of the 70s scene. They had the musicians and more importantly, the melody, that defines what I call prog. No one else comes close. Kansas wrote SONGS, not 50 musical ideas stuffed into an odd time signiture. I would agree that Portnoy is showing his Peart influence in this drum fill, but it doesn't sound like it is taken *directly* from a Rush song. It does, however, show more than a passing resemblance to two Peart fills that I can think of off the top of my head:

    1) The extended fill in Tom Sawyer, from 2:32 to around 2:40, after Lifeson's solo. 2) The final "big fill" at the end of Lock and Key, from 4:40 to 4:52.

Now, granted, these aren't exactly like the ACOS fill, but they do show a definite Peart influence.

Note: For those of you whose mission in life it is to protect your favorite band: this is not an anti-DT post, or an anti-Awake post, or an anti- FII post, or an anti-anything post. It is a pro-opened-mind post. Remove your fan-colored sunglasses, take a deep breath, pop a Prozac, and demonstrate remarkable self-restraint for the first time in your lives. Grow up and accept the fact that musical tastes ARE subjective and some people have different opinions from you. Or else I'll post another anti-mailing list parody post :-) Yes, Itchy, I lined up this part of the posting just for you. :-) But, not because of the content; I know you're cool unless I flame Marillion. ;-P

I'm not sure why you'd want to find DT clones, but I know why I do. I think that Images and Words is the greatest album of all time, and everything DT has released since then has been sort of a let-down. Don't get me wrong, I still love the others and think they are great in their own way. But nothing has been nearly as earth-shattering as I&W. I'd love to hear an I&W part II from any band, but I doubt that I ever will.

(Please note that the above paragraph is merely a statement of my opinion and not an invitation to get into an album vs album debate. And, NO, I am NOT stuck in the past, so please spare me and everyone that debate also.)

I&W has several unique qualities. I'm not sure which quality in particular you are looking for.

If you are looking for an I&W production clone, get any album produced by David Prater. His work is remarkably homogenous and un-imaginative. (should I say "like Kevin Shirley, too" or will that re-ignite a flame war that I missed)

If you are looking for an I&W vocal clone, I'd have to almost say forget it. Even James doesn't sound a whole lot like he did on I&W anymore (Not that I think that is necessarily a bad thing. Nor do I wish to debate that point with anyone). But several singers come close. Here are the bands that I think employ singers sounding most like I&W-era James:

Arkhe - the production is poor. Vocally it sounds more like the I&W demos that I&W itself. The music is good, but hard to separate in the mix. But, give this singer David Prater and a million dollar studio and he would clone James vocally absolutely, perfectly, flawlessly, etc.

Digital Ruin - I haven't gotten this yet. I listened to most of it (on CD, not on someones web page). The music is highly influenced by DT but still very original nonetheless. The singer sounds very much like James on I&W. This is one of the best things I've heard lately both musically and vocally.

Dream Theater - just checking to see if you were paying attention.

If you are looking for an I&W music clone, I'd have to say good luck. There are so many of these types of bands out there you'd have to buy hundreds of CDs to find what you liked. I'd be so bold (fool that I am) as to say that some of these bands are more enjoyable for me to listen to than DT on anything other than I&W. (please read that last sentence again before flaming. I said Me not You (pun intended)) Here are the bands that I would describe as "striving to clone DT": Empty Tremor, Ivanhoe, Mayadome, Divine Regale, Eldritch, Madsword, Threshold, Vanden Plas. (NOTE: I have no desire to get into a big flame war about the reasons for my inclusion of any of the bands on this list. Yes, it's true that I was not in any of the bands, I didn't have a hidden camera in their basement practice rooms, and I'm not psychic. This is all just my harmless little opinion. If you disagree, great; but I don't care :-).) Really, they are all different enough vocally to fall way short. However, some of these are very good bands despite what some (insert subliminal "picky people" here) may view as a lack of originality. Again, some of these bands have released albums that I (again note the use of the first person singular) view (on my not-interested-in-explaining subjective scale) to be "better" than Awake, ACOS, & FII.

I couldn't even begin to list bands that have a noticeable DT influence. I have no problem with bands injecting influences into their music. You won't catch me calling DT a Yes-Metallica-DixieDreg-Al Dimeola-Rush-Pink Floyd wannabe clone band. (not here anyway HA HA :-) - that was a joke, not an un-intended subtle revelation - flame me not) They have done a remarkable job of incorporating a wide range of musical influences into their music without being merely derivative. To counter several other suggestions, I'd have to say that Superior and Lemur Voice have either a small DT influence or have the same influences as DT. I would list Dreamscape as a Superior clone band and Hydrotoxin as a Lemur Voice clone band. These clones of clones remind me of the movie Multiplicity. I'm still waiting for the slobbering idiot prog-metal clone band :-) What you doing these days, Bafu? :-) (Note the "smiley" to denote humor).

If you have an open mind and believe that it is possible (without your DT Fan brain exploding) for other bands to produce music as good as or better (on your subjective scale of course and not the Joe Scale (tm)) than Dream Theater, I'd recommend you check out several web sites for progressive metal info:

Heady Metal - http://www.headymetal.simplenet.com Limited progressive metal reviews, includes sound samples Metallic Symphonies - http://www.onr.com/progress Huge list of progressive metal reviews, no samples, but good descriptions Perpetual Motion - http://www.wco.com/~mindcage/wwwboard/wwwboard.html a progressive/power metal discussion area - Find me here as "Joe-X" The Laser's Edge - http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd the best progressive metal vendor on the planet. (period!)

Obviously, there's a whole world of other progressive and just plain good music besides just progressive metal out there if you're willing to listen and look for it.

Expand your horizons, Expand your mind.

Oh, and PLEASE, PLEASE don't flame me. (Sing this to the Beatles tune).

Joe. - The new and improved humorless model :-) Hoping to do a post with nothing but disclaimers someday.
