This doesn't really affect me, since I've never ordered any of your boots,
but I might make the suggestion that keeping up with current orders while
simultaneously catching up on back orders is a disastrous business
practice, and absolutely unfair to back-ordered customers. I'd think that
common sense would tell you to stop creating new projects until the old
orders have been filled. Granted this upsets the flow of revenue, but you
should be well in the black from 10 months ago when you cashed all the
checks for these "old" orders. This stack (LIFO) routine is a horrid way
to fill these orders, when it's obvious that a queue (FIFO) should be the
implemented structure. Just food for thought, and again, I have nothing
invested, but I'd probably bet that more than a couple people agree with this.

    >Perhaps I *did* bite off more than I could chew, so to speak, but it has

    >that was explained to me.

Your efficiency is probably great by now, with several years of experience
under your belt. I'm sure you're getting more CDs out per unit of time
than ever before, but I'll still make the argument that your just not
filling the orders in a correct, chronological fashion. Instead, you're
filling them based on which orders still have unspent cash attached to
them. If I were one of the back-order customers, I'd be pissed.

Sorry about the rambling, just thought this was an interesting/disturbing bit.

The type of mail-class being used is not the point, 'cause there is no mail-class
that takes 8 months to ship (unless there's a "34th-class" that I'm unaware of)! I
think the point is that Mike is cashing customers checks and then waiting 8 to 10
months (or more) to get them their CD's. That is just insane, and unprofessional.
Nothing personal against Mike, 'cause I've dealt with him and was pleased with his
products. However, I wasn't too pleased to have to wait 8 months for my Precious
Things CD! IMO, there is only one acceptable solution for Mike: To STOP making
ANY new projects or accepting ANY new orders until ALL the backlog is caught up,
and then to only make as many CD projects at one time as he can keep up with.
There are at least three Prism Records discs I'd be willing to buy tomorrow if I
thought they'd be here within 6-8 weeks (a normal and acceptable amount of time).
But, since experience tells me otherwise, I'll have to take my business elsewhere.
Its a simple matter of customer service.

Now for an unsolicited plug: Everyone should strive to be more like Ryan Whitaker
(Scarred Records) in this area. His shipment time is always around one week from
the time you send your check. NOW THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Keep it up Ryan.

The ytsejam really sucks right now. I'm not going to start pointing
fingers and quoting back people's huge posts or anything, but I do want to
    make a comment or two.

A similar Mike Bahr/Prism Records debate was underway a while ago, and the
end result seemed to be that Mike Bahr would keep posts about Prism
Records, his personal trials and tribulations, and details about how much
things cost and how much he makes, off the jam as much as possible.

And what has happened since then? What have all Mike Bahr's posts been
    about?

The fact that several people still haven't received CD's after 10 months
and they see no other way to get what they pay for than to spill this
information to the ytsejam speaks volumes about Prism Records' business
practices. And what if this current debate did not come about? Would
    they not have said anything?

I, for one, do not want to read about this shit. The ytsejam is a forum
in which to discuss topics relating to Dream Theater. I think most of us
do not want to read about who objects to Prism Records, who
loves Prism Records, and who is still waiting for $75 worth of CDs.

Yes, the CDs are featuring Dream Theater's music, so that makes the
subject somewhat relevant here, but as history has shown, discussion of
the business side of Prism Records ruins the ytsejam really quickly.

So let's just not talk about it. Prism Records' CEO can use web and email
marketing strategies without holding public quarterly meetings on the
    ytsejam, I'm sure.

    Thanks for reading.

I agree. My problem has never been with the wait b/c Mike has always
gotten the CDs to me eventually, and they're always of top notch quality.
My problem is with the complete lack of communication he's extended me.
Mike's replied to my open letter on the Jam, but still hasn't replied to me
personally and so I still don't know when/how/if I'm going to get my $75
bucks or the CDs that he owes my brother (VS and TDOW). I didn't want to
make this public, but if I'm not going to get acknowledged in any way,
shape, or form privately, that's what I've got to do. It's a shame. I
really want to order two of Mike's new releases, but if I'm going to be
treated like this I just can't justify it - however nice he's been in the
    past. CD-R, here I come... :)

I agree. (Hey, I'm an agreeable guy). In 3 years of Ytsejam reading I'm
not sure if I've seen such an exposion of immaturity. Everyone flaming,
extremely little DT info. I've always thought the best mailing lists were
partially moderated, and I wish this one was as well. Skadz seems to do a
great job keeping the list up and running, which is a challenge in itself
alot of times, but maybe we/he should consider another assistant admin to
weed out the more annoying of the lot. Not moderated, but maybe
unsubscribe people from the jam for a week with a notice saying that their
kind of posts are not welcome here and that they can re-sub in 7 days.
This would be after a warning, of course. Wishful thinking. :) Take care
    all...

            Hi,

So, you people are crying out loud because the 'jam isn't what you
expected, right? Maybe I should remind you of another mailing list that
shares a great deal with this one and is moderated. It's called "Voices"

C'mon, people. If you're tired of this whining in the 'jam,
subscribe to that list and let's have some good discussions there (you can
see that I'm not sending as much messages as I used to, because the
content of the 'jam isn't exactly what I expect to be).

    Hello, all!

I was reading the February issue of Keyboard Magazine whilst home being ill. After seeing a mention of Spock's Beard and other prog bands in a letter to the editor, I shoulda taken it as a good sign. Flipped to the meat of the magazine, finding a full article interview with Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater. Went back, and reread the opening portion of the Magazine, and found a 3/4 page interview with Mickey Simmonds, detailing his gear used with Fish! Oh, yeah, and there was another 3/4 page section on Portishead to go along. Just thought ye might wish to know....

    ]From Official King's X Web Site ( http://www.compassnet.com/grump/ )

(January 14, 1998) Doug Pinnick has finalized his Solo recording contract with Metal Blade Records. He is shooting to be finished with the album by late Feb. Ty Tabor will be entering the Studio on Feb. 2 with John Myung and Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater, as well as Rod Morgenstein, to record a new record yet to be titled. King's X is slated to go back in to the studio in March for a late August release of a new album. (end of press release)

YES!!!! Now I've got 6 must-get CD's coming out this year:

Liquid Tension Experiment Ty Tabor - Moonflower Lane (This is Ty's solo CD Naomi's Solar Pumpkin re-recorded w/ Alan Doss of Galactic Cowboys + 4 new tracks) Doug Pinnick's new solo CD Tabor / DerShe / Myung / RodMorg. project DT's Metropolis Pt. II EP King's X - new studio CD

Between Doug working w/ DT and Derrick and John playing w/ Ty....D'ya think there might be a chance of a DT / KX tour this summer?!

For all of you who have been (rightfully) complaining about the lack of DTC lately, here's my attempt to fix that... <evil grin>

First of all, many thanks to whoever transcribed that interview with Derek...very interesting. However, there are a couple of paragraphs that disturb me greatly (and confirm something I've suspected for quite a while):

    > The band gave Shirley three-plus hours of demos, "and he picked >the songs that he liked most. Then he put 'em into Pro Tools and did his >'fat trimming.' Then we went into pre-production rehearsals for two weeks >before we went into the studio. Kevin goes, 'Guys, I know you're probably >not gonna agree with a lot of these edits, but I just want you to hear >what I've done, and then I also want the satisfaction of hearing you guys >play it back as a band.' A lot of his ideas, I think, were great, and >they stuck. The band has a tendency to be superfluous in the writing, and >meander. And Kevin just went in and trimmed out all the shit.

    [snip]

    >Speaking of which, it seems that a big part of producing Dream Theater >would be to subtract, rather than add, notes and frequencies. And Derek >agrees. "Oh yeah,. A lot of subtracting went on during the making of this >record. There wasn't a lot of adding[laughs]."

Personally, every time I've heard the original version of a FII song, I've preferred it to the version that eventually ended up on FII. Obviously, all of these changes were made with the band's approval, but.... All I can say is, I'm glad Kevin Shirley wasn't around to make a few "subtractions" while they were recording I&W.

Actually, I doubt that upgrading from first class to priority would make much of a difference (at least within the 48 contiguous United States). My experience has been that when I mail packages from California to Illinois, there is little difference in shipping time between first class and priority. In fact, the packages I ship generally arrive faster with first class mail than with priority mail (roughly 3 days vs. 4 days). I personally believe that their "2 to 3 day" claim for priority mail is worthless, as I have had priority mail take over 3 days more often than not (once it took 7 days, and this wasn't even close to any major holidays).

Perhaps I have just had a run of bad luck with priority mail, but I doubt that it could be (on average) more than one day faster than first class. So I don't think it's worth paying the extra money to ship the CDs by priority mail.
