I never really thought bass solos would be particularly interesting
either, until I saw Metallica on part of the Evening With 'Tallica
tour. Both Kirk and Jason took solos, but while Kirk's was probably
technically interesting (it certainly was loud and shrill), Jason was
able to get the audience grooving with him. More: his solo was fun to
listen to. After the show we complimented him on it and he was
self-deprecating ("Nahh, it wasn't that good") and completely bereft
of any ego, and my opinion of Newkid went up several notches (the band
laminate he presented to my roommate helped some :)).

(For the 'Tallica-heads, this was the solo where about halfway through,
Kirk and James come out and play part of "Orion" -- at the time,
Jason's favorite 'Tallica song -- with Jason; it was at that moment
we KNEW Jason had finally become truly a part of the band, since it
definitely meant the boyz were paying Jason some respect. :)

Of course, you will have to get the right album. Genesis of the 80s and 90s is very pop. The album in particular is probably the worst of the bunch. (even though I like the album.) I think anything from "Duke" and before is pretty safe, but you might want to start with the Peter Gabriel era stuff. (very strange stuff.) I can't really recommend an album, though, because I don't have enough of the older stuff yet. I'm sure others on the list will give their own recommendations.

You picked a bad album. They just brought on a new lead singer and now sound more like Mike + the Mechanics rather than Genesis. Try one of the older ones and then judge.

Wherein lies the problem? Syrinx, as it would seem is relaying a message from the band. Decide for yourself if you will honor or ignore that request. Sony is probably not a whole hell of a lot cooler about making tape copies of the stuff than they are about digital. Funny, how they make a lot of the gear and media you use to dub though, huh? :) The band, as well as Syrinx, will not hunt you down (if it requires effort) but they've made their stance clear. Reasons and details etc, seem to have no bearing. Just decide if and how you want to dub, and be done with it!

I would definitely recommend it. It is basically a "studio" version of the stuff he covers at his clinics, and if you've ever attended one of those, you know it is definitely an experience not to be missed. Anyway, here's the review:

The video starts off with someone that I presume to be Mike's drum tech (fuck James Brown, THIS guy is the hardest working man in show business) and then Mike plays an unbelivable solo (quelle surprise :). He then goes into an explanation of how is drum set is configured (like a mirror, so that he has the same options on both sides of the kit). He then covers some pretty fundamental double bass techniques (on a personal note, I was surprised to find out that he was influenced by Tommy Lee of Motley Crue, who is MY biggest influence as well): sixteenth notes, triplets (the triplet part was particularly helpful to me), etc., as well as how to incorportate double bass into fills (another really helpful section). Next up is a flat-out amazing solo to a drum machine. Then MP covers his mathematical approach to odd-time signatures, which I still don't have the hang of yet. But that's not for a lack of adequete explanation on his part. Numbers just make my mind numb. The only thing I took away from this section is that 7 is the only number from 1 through 10 that has two syllables, thus it is a source of constant annoyance when playing in odd times (MP's hint: count 7 as "sev" as opposed to "sev-en"). Anyway, the really cool part comes when Mike breaks down parts of Surrounded, Voices, Metropolis, and ACOS because he is joined by DS and JM (who's last name is pronounced My-young, as opposed to my way of saying it as May-young). Then comes another duet with the drum machine. And as was the case with his clinics, the video closes with Mike playing along to a tape of Erotomania.

Pros: Great sound quality and Mike easy, conversational instruction style.

Cons: It would have been nice to have gotten a closer look at what he was doing during the soloing, as opposed to the fancy camera panning around the drum set. I would suggest going with the split screen approach that he used when demonstrating the excerises during the solos as a solution.

Bottom-line: Regardless of your skill level, I would HIGHLY recommend this video. I guarantee that you will find something helpful in here.

I'm the guy who asked for the CD-R of the Echolyn CD. Here's the scoop on the whole thing. IT IS PERFECTLY !@# LEGAL AND NEITHER ECHOLYN OR SONY CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT IF IT IS done (sorry about the caps lock accident, but it's late and I don't want to retype this) for purely personal use and not for retail sale. It's legal to rent a vidoe from blockbuster and tape it off for you rown private home use. It's legal to tape a cassette tape and dub it to another tape for your own home use. It is no different from tape to any other media. I have the tapes of the Echolyn albums, the thing is I hate tapes. They irritate me. All I want is to convert the media of the tapes which I already own and this is not illegal. I'm not looking to sell them for profit or to buy them at a loss. I'll pay for media and recording time to convert the media.

As to the guy who said that they had lost respect for the band, most of the members are actually very nice guys (espc Brett), but Chris Buszby seems to be a major dick. See the transcript of his dealings with the Powermad festival for details.

    FUCK SONY!!!

I realize this statement may seem a bit naive, but I mean Sony is a big, huge, monster conglomerate corporation and I don't see how a few Jammers having a copy of Echolyn on CD-R is going to lose them (Sony) any money. How are they going to know I have a CD-R copy? Come to my house? I think not. 1.Echolyn wants the music out there. 2.I want the music. 3.I like my music on CD. 4.The cds in question are unavailable. 5. Odds 999-1 that Sony will not re-release it. 6. I would not let anyone pirate my copy and sell it as original. 7. If someone makes me a cd-r copy of the unavailable Echolyn cd's I will not only pay you for making them, I will give $20 for each cd to Echolyn (probably about $18 more than they'd get from Sony), AND buy a copy from Sony if they ever re-release them.

    How's that?

    Hi jammers,

Those of you that already know about Spck's Beard, skip to the live review!

This band is amazing! - It's unlike anything I have heard before. - Of course, if you know different let me know, I want to hear anything else like it!

They are definitely prog. However, most of the tracks on the albums are more like Prog/rock concertos. The imagination that goes into the albums is absolutely incredible. The musicianship is first-class.

Albums: 1) The Light. - An exciting, complete, gripping and monumental debut album. 2) Beware of Darkness. - Unlike so many follow-up albums to a brilliant debut, this album is even better with the true musical skill, enginuity and brilliance of EACH musician shining through to a higher degree. 3) The Kindness of Strangers. - Not released yet in the UK; I've got it on order though! - See also live review below.

PLEASE check out Spck's Beard and I promise you will not be disappointed.

Live Review - Utrecht - Tivoli, Jan 18.

Since SB were not playing in the UK I decided to have a weekend in Holland and catch the show in Utrecht.

I had always believed this band to be musically excellent. There is only so much that can be done with digital technology. Yes you can cut and paste; yes you can chop wrong notes out and put in the right ones, etc. The fluidity of their music and in particular their playing, implied to me that they would be able to pull it off live - but the complexity?!?

Well, I'm here to tell you that they DO!

They played the tracks I know (off the first 2 albums) faithfully, not exactly though! They added little diversions (instrumental) and really kicked some serious ass!

They played four songs from the new album (The kindness of Strangers), and they sounded just as exciting and intricate as most of the others. One new song, the singer said, was written to prove that "all the members of the band could sing!" - a joke I think - but it did! Some inspired vocal harmonies over acoustic guitar, just dreamy, then pasionate, then haunting, then minor, then major, then ....... you get the idea.

The drummers solo was impressive to say the least of it. It was one of those beautifully judged solos that maintained a tune (the one it was in the middle of!). It had simple rhythms that he enhanced and enhanced and finally became so intricate that you simply couldn't believe he was doing it - but all the way through you could follow the original song.

In the second encore, (yes they played for about 2 and a half hours), they played "The light" (title track from debut) and started and finished it with Jimmi Hendrix "Purple haze" - slightly clicheed I suppose, but the point is they didn't Spock's Beard style.

This was a great act live, and I've seen a few! Try to catch them in a small venue, they really strike up a rapore with the audience and even on a couple of occasions had semi conversations with some of them.

If you don't know this band, buy something buy them.

If you do know this band, buy something else by them.

In either case, try and catch them live.

Well, I think that many Genesis fans would say that Genesis *used* to be a great prog band. I love early (Peter Gabriel-era) Genesis from the early '70s. I like some of their newer stuff, but I don't like "Calling All Stations" (though some fans do). Unfortunately, you tried the wrong album if you want to hear progressive music (IMO). Another thing to keep in mind is that Genesis is not heavy sounding (it's not prog-metal at all). They have some complex music, but it's not shredding guitar or soloing keyboards (though there are some cool solo keyboards once in a while). They tend to build up a powerful atmosphere and have good melodies and vocals through a combination of all instruments. If you want to hear the progressive era of Genesis, try "Selling England by the Pound", "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", or "Foxtrot" (which includes the 20+ minute "Supper's Ready"). Sorry to hear that you got turned off on them. Good luck. Steve
