    You did! /me listens to Weekend Overdrive (off Southern Steel). /me considers LaRue whatever the heck LaRue is doing from 1:30 for about 30 seconds, to be soloing :)

    I recall a bass solo off Bill Bruford's One of a Kind which just blew me the fuck away. There's one song on there (I belive it was Travels with myself & someone else) where the bass just completely rips!!! Anyone else have this album and know what the heck I'm talking about? :)

    I had a chance to pick the album up in 1978 when it was first released and to see these guys perform live at the original Lupo's (before it moved to the location at which many have probably seen DT). Jeff Berlin is one sick bass player!! I HIGHLY recommened this album to prog fusion heads :) It's all instrumental, there's some jazz influences in there (Nick, you WILL listen to it anyways :). It's got Holdsworth on guitar and really is a must have for orthodox followers of the Holdsworthian religion :)

    That is only true if you own a copy and make a copy for your own use. (Your Blockbuster example is wrong. You don't own the video. You can't legally make a copy for your own use.) If you want to put your cassettes on CD-R for your own use, there isn't a problem. It is when you give them to other people when it becomes a problem. This is what the other guy was talking about.

    I met Chris and thought the exact opposite. He was very friendly and glad that I came to see FG. I don't know what he said about PowerMad, but I don't think FG would have been a good fit considering the other bands there.

    I'd have to agree, and she's a good actress too. ;-) Everybody should check her out in "Sleepers" and "Grosse Pointe Blank" - especially "Sleepers." Disturbing movie, especially in that it's based on a true story, but *excellent* stuff, and Driver's performance is really good. It's also about the only movie where Brad Pitt doesn't make me puke. Of course, he's not really on-screen enough to ruin it. On the subject of movies, by the way, "Titanic" was much better than expected, and it DiCaprio's best performance. That doesn't say much, I don't really like him, but it's an excellent movie...and hands down the best date movie of all time. Every woman in the theater, and many of the men, were crying and hanging on for dear life to their significant other by the end of the flick.

    Good point, and exactly what I was afraid of with the FII studio petition. The way I see it, the ACOS petition was a great example of the fans showing support for a band, and the record company listening. The FII petition was motivated (I think) more by the fact that the method had already worked before than about it actually being a good idea. In essence, every time we petition for something new, we diminish the inherent value of the ACOS petition. At some point, the record company is going to realize that it's not in their best interest to keep listening to us. :)

    The other point regards fighting the fights that need fighting. ACOS was never going to be recorded, so we petitioned and got it done. The FII sessions were going to happen anyway (eventually); the petition just got them moving. The difference here is that the unreleased songs are already slated/out as B-sides, and it's all but certain that Met II is going to be recorded and released on the next album anyway. So, a petition to get the material released would be pointless, since it's already *going* to be released.

    Another point: In a recent JLB interview for a brazilian magazine, he didn't seem to be so happy with that internet petition. When the magazine asked about how that petition influenced, JLB said that DT never will speed up their recording work only because their fans want new CDs or songs. JLB said they (DT) don't want to release some bad quality or unfinished songs, stealing money from their fans, only because the recording company or a fans' petition is asking for this.

    I think it's a very professional way of thinking... Sure all the fans would like to have new DT songs every month (or day!!!), but every song demands writing, jamming, rehearsing and recording time. And I'm sure that all DT members want to release the best works that they can do!!!

    yikes. don't get me wrong, i was weaned on the teats of mother metallica and could recite to you every nuance of lightning, puppets, and justice on demand, but jason's solos are horrible. Sure, you can get people bobbing their heads with a kick drum and a whistle, but that ain't exactly saying much. he spends several interminable minutes pounding away on the e-string, throwing in a few f's and g's for good measure, i guess, but that's no bass solo--that's a metallica song without the other instruments. and when he muddies his way through an attempt at being melodic... oof. like i said, he's fine for what he does, he's the right bass player for metallica, and his stuff with flotsam (no place for disgrace, for example) is great. but leave the solo's alone, jason.

    You seem to be someone who is very knowledgable about music in general, so I thought I'd ask your advice for this one. (that and the usa.net address that I use for the Dream Theater mailing list (most of them are at least amateur musicians, and some are even professionals) isn't working for some odd reason) The question is: which 12-string guitar should I buy? I've found there to be four types, and they generally have four prices. One: Takamine acoustic/electric 12-string. Price: $1300. Out of the question. Two: Takamine or Guild acoustic 12-string. Price: $460-480. More in my price range, but at the very top of it. Three: acoustic 12-string whose maker's name escapes me. Price: $360. More in the middle of my price range, but probably not the same quality as Type Two. (probably of lesser quality) Four: Cort acoustic 12-string. Price $260. Obviously at the lower end of my price range and probably the quality scale. Which one do you think I should buy? I have $! ! 200 which a relative gave me as a Christmas gift and around $320 in my savings account, plus around $45 that I could use to buy strings or something like that. So, the maximum I could spend on the guitar would be around $500. Fairly obviously, I'm going to be aiming for a 12-string style similar to that of Ian Anderson (if I can get that good) or Greg Lake (to a lesser degree; he's good, but not my favorite).
