Is there a CD with the unreleased song WAYN? I heard the .ra file
and again over the PA system before a show, and I LOVE it!!! I already
ordered the Hollow Years single with TWIUTB (hasn't come yet, but.....), are
there any other CD's that I can get some un-released FII stuff?

I haven't had a chance to post about the JLB/pot thing (I know the
thread is kinda dead), but my feeling are....WHO CARES? Some people on
here make it sound like he's an addict or something. I HIGHLY doubt that,
or else it would reflect on his performance, and I have never seen DT in
    better shape.

Some questions about different bands. I want to get some new CD's
but want some reviews and reccomendations first.

Symp. X - Which album is better?

Angra - I know nothing about them. Me being a HUGE DT fan, what album
    should I start with?

Shadow Gallery - I've heard different things about them. One friend tells
me I have to get this, others say it borders cheesey. I'm not into the
screaming 80's metal sound, and thats the impression I've been getting about
    them. Any other comments?

King Crimson - I only have Thrak. I LOVE it! But then I heard
ThrackAttack, and I didn't understand it. WAY too out there for my liking.
I heard Red was a good album. What's that genre like? And whats the other
albums like Discipline and Beat like?

    Thats it for now!

    Look, guys.

There's no reason to lash out at *me* for telling you about the
message *I* got from echolyn. You don't like it? Talk to them.

As for the progday (not powermad) situation, you have the *whole*
thing out of line (and up your ass, since it's clear you really don't have
a clear understanding of what happened), i suggest you email Ghost,
Finneus's Public Relations guy at qghost@fast.net - he can give you a much
better idea of what happened than i can, and then you can make your own
    decision.

Whether *any* of you choose to make a digital reproduction of
Echolyn material is up to you. Keep in mind that you *are* breaking the
law, no matter what the intentions are.

Oh, one more thing: To the guy who said Chris 'the business man'
is an asshole: to pass a judgement over someone that you do not know even
remotely is an attestment to your immaturity. next time you may want to
look a little farther at the "true" facts before you come up with such a
    nieve position.

I know this is going to piss a lot of people off, but what the hell :).
Personally, I think Jaco is one of the few bass players who is able to
incorporate lots of notes but still make it groove and hence provide the
fundamental role of the bass. I find that lots of bass players (especially
those who started of on the guitar) play lots of notes that mean nothing and
detract from the role that the bass plays in the band. For example, Billy
Sheehan is amazing technically but he doesn't move me like Jaco did. The
bass plays an important role in the band as it has both the harmony and
rhythm. Personally, I don't think that the bass is a beautiful 'solo'
instrument (although Jaco makes it almost sound that way). It's great that
there are many players out there who are trying to expand the role of the
bass but some things just don't sound good on the bass (eg tapping).

Well, thanks, but that much I know.

So, I guess the point is that echolyn/sony/whomever WANTS the music out
there, but only if it sounds REALLY BAD.

I'm glad we got that all cleared up.

seriously, I don't think I will ever be successfully convinced that there
is really enough of a difference between a digital and an analog copy that
warrants the ENCOURAGING of an analog copy and at the same time the
DISCOURAGING of a digital copy. People who do, I believe, have GREATLY
    overrated the digital medium.

Unfortunately, I don't have the XCD yet (let's pray for it to
arrive), but what I can understand from repeated listens to that beginning
is "Falling into Infinity" and "Burning My Soul". Are there more phrases??
I'm curious! At least I was right in recognizing LaBrie's voice.

I think it is "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may".

It's from poem by a romantic English (not sure if he was romantic, but must be) writer called Robert Herrick, from his poem "To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time".

MiniDisc. Yep. I heard that high generation copies of this sort actually start to sound BETTER. Can you believe that?? Modern technology is just so out of control these days. Wait a second... what did I just say? Somebody slap me.

Be aware that it's copyright infringement every time you copy a CD, regardless of the destination media. There ain't no bones about it. Even shareware and freeware CDs are actually copyrighted, and there is often a condition attached that allows for legal duplication, but 99% of all forms of distribution are usually prohibited.

I was gonna offer a bunch of the Echolyn discs through Prism, and Syrinx even helped me compile all the source so I'd have rockin' copies of it, and I eventually got an e-mail from Chris Buzby asking me (not *telling*, but *asking* me) not to make those CDs. He didn't seem like anything other than an artist watching his butt for stray torpedoes. I figured, "fair enough", and called off the Echolyn projects. I would have liked to release them because I think there's something unique about Echolyn that nobody else has, but sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

When I read about what he did with the Powermad incident, it seems so incongruent with his fairly friendly personality from my experience, that I have to assume things were just going bad for them at that point and/or he had a frustrating week or something. I'm not denying it... it's probably all true... I just don't want people thinking this band is a bunch of dickheads who go around pimping their legal department to every music promoter in North America. There's always more to a story, always context. We may never know the true extent of all of it. I know this much: when the promoter made those CDRs, he put himself in harm's way. No band ought to refuse such promotion, but all bands have the right to if they so choose.

I've read one book by him, SWORDBEARER, which I thought was somewhat disappointing style-wise (not to mention it's basically a rewrite of Michael Moorcock's Elric/Stormbringer material), but I've been told it was his first and I should continue, which I'll do eventually.

Oddly enough he was both a guest -and- a book-dealer at the SF convention I attended this past weekend (ChattaCon, basically more of a weekend party than a serious con since free beer flows all weekend (30-40 kegs!)), and it's an eerie feeling to write out a check to a well-known fantasy writer for other writers' books (Terry Pratchett and Storm Constantine, actually :)).

Let's not start any SF/fantasy threads here, but I'm always glad to discuss books via email. :)

    >Has anyone out there heard "Freaks of Nature" by Kansas? Any opinions >on it?

    >Thanks, BH Hi. I've got Freaks of Nature and though I like it very much, I have the feeling that it's not accepted by many. I think it's an attempt to go back to the early days. The production is well accomplished and they play with dexterity. We all love the old Kansas, but David Ragsdale plays better violin than Robbie Steinhardt. I'm sure many people still prefer Robbie than David even though IMHO the latter's got a better technique. I myself prefer Robbie just for melancholy. The songs seem to have been written in their early years, they have an extra that was sorely missed. I find ‘I Can Fly' very similar to ‘Icarus Borne on Wings of Steel', and some are a bit longer too. ‘Black Fathom 4' can sit comfortably with songs like ‘Magnum Opus' or ‘Closet Chronicles', really. Some songs in that CD tend to be poppier though, but the last one, 'Peaceful and Warm' is a typical Steve Walsh ballad: read beautiful, very similar to ‘Lonely Wind' or a song by Steve Walsh himself from his solo CD Dreamer Schemer from 1980 'Just How It Feels' I think it's called. There's a song by Kerry Livgren: 'Cold Grey Morning', but it's not that impressive, albeit the great voilin work! Steve Walsh's voice is definitely not what it used to be. It is raspy and I think he was struggling to reach high notes. I didn't expect a high level of singing from Steve, mainly due to the Live at the Whiskey live album, which is disappointing when compared to their Two for the Show. He is forgiven though, not everybody can be like ex-Judas Priest Rob Halford, almost 50 and still screaming like if he were a baby. Phil Ehart does a wonderful job behind the drums, but that's standard. All in all, Freaks of Nature is very very good, but most people still miss that something that made Kansas music so special. Some point out at Kerry Livgren as the final ingredient, but I think it takes more than that. I think that they wouldn't be able to peak as they did in the 70's. If you like Masque, you'll like Freaks of Nature. I hope this helps! Bye BP No Signature!

Okay 'Close My Eyes' as you say is 'Cover My Eyes' and is available as a mp3 file on the web as already mentioned here. 'The Way It Used To Be' is on the 'Hollow Years' CD single. 'Speak To Me' is on the Jap FII and again a mp3 file is on Dr.Mosh's web site. 'Raise The Knife' with vocals I have no idea, without vocals there is a version on 'Guitar Talkin' boot.

Surely you are not suggesting that some one should digitally copy these songs onto a CDR ? Blasphemy !

I come across a cd in the store today that I'm suprised I didn't hear about on the Jam first. It's called "Angelica" and the sticker says, "Opera and rock unite in a magnificent new creation featuring David Foster, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steve Stevens, & Dweezil Zappa." It's created and produced by a Cliff Magness. (?) It's on Atlantic, and I think they're trying to cash in on the success of TSO.

I thought it would be really good, but it's not. Imagine going to an opera and there's a kid in the back playing a Casio drum machine. Then Vai comes in for a two-mesure solo consisting of a scale run. I must say Dweezil's performance was the best.

Unless you are a Vai completist or something I would skip this disc and pick up Theion's "Theli", a proper mix of opera and rock that will punch your balls off.

I also found Kevin Gilbert's "Thud". On first listen, I like it less than Toy Matinee, but still a very good disc from our kinky departed friend.
