    Hello all,

Anybody going to the Paradise Lost show next week on Tuesday, (I think), at the Shepards Bush Empire?.

I haven't got my tickets yet but hopefully I will be turning up. I'll be wearing the FII blue shirt with the neat graphic designs, so say hello :)

If I can't get tickets over the phone, is it worth trying the touts or will I get hammered by them?

    See you there,

    Ash.

Is it just me or does anyone else get a chill from in Trial of Tears, 11:10 into the song right when JLB sings "I look for the way back home" and it starts to pick up again from the mellow part? There is just something about that particular part being the part itself or the transition that is just incredible.

    Hi all

I waited for this to crop up rather than start it myself, but now it's here, I'll contribute my 2 Euro-cents worth. Since I joined the list (back around number 600 and something) there has always been talk of bands selling out, but nobody ever dared mention the almost holy name of Genesis in this connection. Well, if ever a band sold out, then it must be Genesis. Before people start sending me hate mail and so on, let me first say that Genesis were one of THE bands for me when I was a kid (like Dream Theater for many of the younger readers on the list - don't worry, you'll grow out of it). Between 1971 and 1977 I must have seen them at least 20 times - once as an opener for Cumbersome, Fake and Trauma (a.k.a. ELP). I had all the albums, knew all of the intros that Peter Gabriel used to do before the songs, the full works. I was still a big fan when Gabriel left, but the sellout began when Steve Hackett left. When I first heard "And Then There Were Three" I thought the guy in the record shop had put the wrong album on the record player. But even that was good compared to what came later - Phil Collins and his ego proudly present... I've heard all of the stuff after 'Wind And Wuthering' (including then new one) and I find it bland, smooth radio yuppy pap, just the sort of stuff that looks good in a CD collection sandwiched between Simply Red and Whitney Houston. Genesis used to have one of the best live shows around in the 70s (rock theatre was avery good description, especially if anybody remebers the 'Lamb Lies Down" tour), but today I wouldn't even cross the road if they were playing across the street (unless it was to pull the plug).

By the way, Spock's Beard were simply amazing on Monday night.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) (http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Rapids/2321) Currently playing: Steve Hackett - Voyage Of The Acolyte

I'm no expert on the genre (or any of the other sub-genres), but I'm at work, bored, and can't play Quake, sooo:

Angra - I've been told that "if you like the 'Images and Words' sound, try 'Holy Land'. If you like your prog fast and furious, try 'Angel's Cry'." Read that on someone's site. I've ordered Angel's Cry, because more often than not a band's albums get better as time goes on and it's the latest one.

Shadow Gallery - They're OK. I have the 'Carved in Stone' CD. For the most part it suffers from a poor production (like most up and coming prog bands), but it's not the band's fault. I particularly like 'Deeper Than Life'. That song sounds the closest to DT-style prog. But songs like 'Alaska' border very closely on cheesy. The vocals sound a lot like Queensryche. And their music is not as complex as Dream Theater, but all in all they're a good band.

Symphony X - This band is very cool. It's my assessment that each album get better than the previous one. I myself have ordered 'The Divine Wings of Tragedy'. After hearing a couple of songs at a jammer's house I was hooked.

King Crimson - Sorry. Don't know a thing about this band.

Hope this helps (and doesn't step on anyone's musical toes)

"To Live Forever" studio version is available on the "Lie" single. It kicks much ass, and the vocal harmonies are to die for, or so I heard :P

Anyway, good luck finding a copy of this single anyway. Apparently, it's a DT rarity nowadays, even though I had no trouble finding my copy.........

Yeah, it's one of these threads again. I've always kept in my head a list of the solos that really stand out amongst ALL of the countless solos we hear everyday in just about every form of music. These are the solos that when we first hear them we just get lost in the moment. And even ten or fifteen years later, every time you hear them, you've got to stop what you're doing: "Hold on a second, dear" (air guitar) "OK, sorry, I had to do that" :)

This has come to include keyboard and bass solos thanks to prog music:

Mr. Matt's List O' Solos: ----------------------------------- "Jump" (Van Halen) - Every note in this solo kicks ass. It's like the perfect solo for what is otherwise a fluffy teen song from the 80s. "Another Day" (Dream Theater) - Come on. This is what playing with feeling is really all about IMO. Johnny boy is on the money "Take The Time" (Dream Theater) - Two things. This whole song is a fooking classic, but Kevbo's keyboard solo is just rocking from start to finish! Also, I've got to include the little bass fill at 5:10 from our boy Myung. I always have to stop what I'm doing to make the face and do the little two-finger slide. :) Oh, and JP's outro solo whips ass. "Sultans Of Swing" (Dire Straits) - Tell me you don't dig Knopfler's crab-claw hand-picking action on both of the solos in this tune. This boy's got soul in spades on this one. "Headin' For A Heartbreak" (Winger) - This solo kicks ass even today. Yes, we probably feel silly thinking back to the 80s music (our tastes have changed, eh?), but Reb is a monster guitarist and this solo is just plain beautiful work. Go towards the light, Reb! "Anything played by Kevin and John" (Dream Theater) - I had to include this because anytime these two kids do that unisolo stuff I get totally stoked. They're bloody geniuses! "Heaven Tonight" (Yngwie Malmsteen) - Bet you were wondering when he'd show up. This is such a beautiful solo full of soul and overflowing with ridiculously perfect technique from the guy almost single-handedly created the "conceited asshole" guitarist stereotype. "Under a Glass Moon" (Dream Theater) - Petrucci. In a killer solo that clearly shows his Vai influence (practically note-for-note), John shows why he is the premier progmetal guitarist. It's gotta be a crime to be this good. "In My Dreams" (Dokken) - Hehe. To this day doesn't your jaw drop when you watch this video? Lynch is a total monster. And those piston-fingers of his should be registered as lethal weapons for the sake of fretboards everywhere.

I dodn't include Greg Howe, Eric Johnson or Eric Clapton (despite their *strong* influence on my playing), because I

Swordbearer is probably my least favorite of Glen Cook's books. You made an unlucky choice for starting out. A much better bet would be either "Tower of Fear" or "The Black Company" which are both wonderful. Actually, "Angels Cry" is their first album. It's fast, furious, and amazingly beautiful. "Holy Land" is a little more progressive and shows a definite Brazilian influence. Personally, I prefer the more straight-ahead classical sound on AC, but you really can't go wrong with either.

    > Shadow Gallery - They're OK. I have the 'Carved in Stone' CD. For the > most part it suffers from a poor production (like most up and coming prog > bands), but it's not the band's fault. First of all, let me say that "screaming 80's metal" is *way* off base. Shadow Gallery has some of the best vocal arrangements I've ever heard. Overall, their sound is based mostly on keyboard and piano. The guitar is competent enough, but not really the focus of their music. If you like your music really heavy, then stay away. But if you like excellent piano, keyboards, and vocals, check out "Carved in Stone".

    > Symphony X - This band is very cool. It's my assessment that each album > get better than the previous one. I myself have ordered 'The Divine Wings > of Tragedy'. After hearing a couple of songs at a jammer's house I was > hooked.

"Divine Wings of Tragedy" is an amazing album. It's got everything - incredible guitar, great keyboards, great vocals. I haven't heard their two previous albums, but I understand that DWoT is their best. Symphony X is one of those bands that's just overflowing with talent - you should definitely check them out.

    Hope this helps....

Gia whined and bitched........ Hi all DT fans, <MAJOR Snip>

Speaking of Major snip......can the attitude dear it does nothing to make you look any better in our eyes.

" it's not often that they got copped a feel by someone who looks like me." Lawd have mercy...you must be the most arrogant person I have EVER seen post here. Listen Dear...beauty comes in many ways and arrogance and conceit were never considered beautiful...you are NOT all that and a bag of chips.

I too was determined at my first DT show ever to get to the front and watch the show...but the big difference is that I did it with politeness, manners and class.....I did not need to resort to using my body to fool a man so I could get by. I have had the honor of meeting many of the male Typefaces at this show and they were all class acts. All I had to do was ask and they saved a spot for me at the front and even watched out for me so that now harm came my way.

" I did not ask the singer to sign my breast after the show," is that breast or beast???????

"I did meet the singer, whom I thought was arrogant. "

I too met Mr. Labrie and altho I have heard rumors regarding a potential arrogance problem....he was nothing but sweet, nice and very cordial to me.....so much so that when I asked him very nicely..I got not only and autograph but several pictures with him. I did not experience one bit of conceit....he was quite soft-spoken and very modest. I guess something about you rubbed him the wrong way...hence the attitude you received. In fact with the exception of the Silent Man...I met and was able to get pictures with and autographs from the rest of the band. Those guys were so sweet and so very nice to me....perhaps it's because i was "assertive" but not "aggressive" There is a difference. Of course you can see for yourself how well being genuinely nice has it's rewards! (Check the many pics on my page) "He seems to me the kind of guy that got picked on in school so he anointed himself superior to others as a defense mech. Jerk."

Wow....look in a mirror honey...sounds a lot like the pot calling the kettle black!

I am often fond of exhorting the other Lady Jammers to Rock out.....but you my dear are no lady....from the sound of several male jammers posts after that show.....they have your number......don't be surprised if they never call you though.

Also a Lady Jammer doesn't need to resort to using swear words to get her point across...using them just shows a complete lack of intelligence, vocabulary and class. Do us all a favor Gia, Miss Thang....shut up before you make the Lady Jammers look bad!

    Hearts away...

    Coldfire coldfire@pacbell.net http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/haight/25/
