    him:
    > Payne's Gray -- Kadath Decoded

Hey, Paul, when you get a chance to listen to this, post a review if you
get a chance. When Thrak played it for us the night of the Marietta Fates
Warning show, I liked what I heard of it -- but I was too keyed up waiting
for Fates by then to pay any real attention. What's the straight dope on
this one? Is it worth Ken Golden's raves?

    Cheers,
    Phil

    Heh...
there're some more solos that I love:
Steve Morse 'Cascades' - especially played live, the part where the keys and
    guitar play together...
Joe Satriani 'The Headless Horseman' - not that it's oo cool, but it'v
    VERRRY funny!
Steve Morse 'Third Power' - great combinatioan of acoustic and electric
that I haven't heard anywhere else, well, Steve does that best!!!!!!
Steve Morse 'La Villa Strangiato' - yeah!!! sure I know that was Alex who
originally played that, but I like Steve's vesrion on Working Man better!!!
Greg Howe - anything from 'Parallax'!!!
..heh... and one more Morse - 'Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming' - this was
the sog I liked best of the whole Purpendicular album!!! and it still rulez!!!
    yes-yes... I haven't mentioned any JP's solos - simply because I like them
all and they have alredy been spoken about...
and one more thing... do bass solos count?
if so - than it MUST BE!!! 'The Kings Of Sleep' by Stu Hamm, the first time
I heard it, I was simply blown away!!! And even now, when I can play the
song myself, it still seems awesome to me!!!!!
and more on keyboards: Tonny Lavitz rulez on Mountain Waltz!!!

I've heard they are done as well. Bach has been touring as Sebastian
Bach. I have no clue who he has backing him up.

    > And I agree that Subhuman Race was a great album....
I didn't really care for this one. Too much of a grunge feel for me. I
dont know if this came out before or after Motley Crue/Motley Crue but in
my opinion, they sound like the same album almost. SR is a little better.

Slave to the Grind on the other hand is a great one...

    Hey jammers,

What about Alex Lifeson's solo in "The Camera Eye"? That solo just
blows me away every time I hear it. Also, does anyone know about Dream
Theater coming to Louisiana. It would be a huge treat for every Dream
Theater fan in the state (even though they are not a huge group of
people, because there are so many fans of (c)rap, country, and pop 40 in
the state), but it would be excellent to see Dream Theater live. A
couple of my friends (Hey Donepudis, if you're reading this 'jam) went
to a concert and were just blown away, so I want to have that experience
    too.

wow, you've sold me. i've relaced nearly every rush cd, and 3/4 of my
old yes, with rematers. if the difference is that great, it's worth it.

    >help DT AND to help us, not just to demand that the band do as we
    >say!

hammer, meet nail on head. 100% right here. hey, one of the reasons i
love DT so much is that the albums have so much replay value. i can
still listen to WDADU or I&W and hear something new, though each album
is practically committed to memory. i'm only beginning to discover
FII--so give that some time, please.

    from matt b:
    >prefer, gasp scream yell, Anna Lee over those two songs. Be well.

Anna Lee is fast becoming one of my favorite songs on the album. sorta
like derek's "wait for sleep." ooh, that's a can of worms. the two
songs are totally different; the two players are totally different; both
    moving, powerful, and gracefully done.

because the role of bass has been debated so well, and whether they
should solo, i should like to throw a few cents into the pot. i've
always hated the term "bass guitar;" a guitar is a guitar, a bass is a
bass. i play electric bass. ok, enough semantics.

an instrument is a a vehicle for conveying emotion, feeling. when
playing in a band setting, the goal of the members is to capture that
emotion with a united sound. being an instrument of deep, rhythmic
sound, that united band sound (the song) is often most effective when
the bass plays a supporting, foundation role. if the overall emotion
and feeling is best conveyed with a bass solo (a la living colour's
"broken hearts"), then it should be played. if not, then not. as long
as the overall feel is maintained, i tend to think that there are no
    limitations.

I already have Holy Land (amazing!) and Angels Cry (more straight-forward
but still kicks ass) as well as Holy Live. Now I'm looking at
picking up one or more of their other EP-type albums.

Which one should I get? Reaching Horizons, Evil Warning, or Freedom
Call? It seems that , at most, I'll gett 3-4 new songs - most of
them seem to be demos or alternative versions of songs that are already
    on HL or AC.

    Thanks for the adivce!

PS - Carved in Stone is one of the biggest pieces of crap that I've
ever heard. It's cheesier than the entire Chuck-E-Cheese franchise
of Green Bay. Whenever anyone even mentions that band, all I hear
in my head is the chorus of Crystaline Dream and it makes me wanna
puke my guts out. I don't know how they can even be mentioned in the
same PARAGRAPH as other bands like DT,FW, Angra, etc. And they are
even well below other bands like Superior, Lemur Voice, and Enchant.

..pretty much sais everything. Every time I think "This is a good one", I just end up thinking of another good one... and another... and another...

But something else struck my mind ... what is it that makes a guitar solo good? What do you think?

I've read a lot about SX here in the jam lately... I have TDWoT (BTW, the song kicks ass), and it's really a VERY VERY cool album. Any prog-metal nuthead must have it. The vocals are just great (see how it changes all the time in TDWoT, from a Dio-like tone to that clean and incredibly beautiful one in the end - "Looking up to the heavens..."). A really must have. Now answering to Alexandro... man, I looked the album up a lot here in Sao Paulo, and all I got as an answer was "we are out of stock". That sucked. I did not try to buy "The Damnation Game" (they had that), 'cause I wanted TDWoT. Then I ordered via Internet. It's a German release the one I have, and as I've bought in a american store, I think that means there's not an american release of that album...

About the favorite solos thread... man, they are so many I can't even name some... Maybe "Scarred", "Under a Glass Moon", "For the Love of God" (not the whole song, I can't remember the exact time now), and some Savatage tunes.

Now for the DTC... I was thinking another day... It's cool to have some "rare" DT material... I have the January '90 Guitar Player (Johnny Marr on the cover), that has an interview with John and John ( :) ) about the band... And I lost the oportunity to buy that poster that Mike is making jokes about in the "Live in Tokyo" video (the one with all those condoms). Damn, I was away from home, and I wouldn't carry that thing back here.

I got a couple of cds from DREAM DISC a week ago. The first is RHAPSODY's Legendary Tales. I researched it on the web and every review I saw gave it the highest rating possible. After a few listens, I can say that this album kicks ass. It is an awesome symphonic power metal album with lots of arrangements and a MANOWAR type atmoshphere. I didn't think the vocals of Joe Terry/Fabio Lione were that good on LABRYINTH's No Limits, but he is much better on Legendary Tales. This album is a must have for fans of ANGRA, HELLOWEEN, etc. BUY THIS! It was only $15.

The other cd is GAMMA RAY's 'Somewhere out in Space'. I am still getting used to it but it is pretty cool. I don't think any of the tracks really come close to 'Land of the Free' or 'Man on a Mission' though.

I saw that NOCTURNAL RITES signed with Century Media. Hopefully their albums will come down in price. Can anyone offer reivews of JAG PANZER's latest albums? Does anyone know what is going on with SENTINEL STEEL? I need reading material. How is CROM?

Well, I must say that this is a great idea to share musical tastes and opinions among the jam, so there it goes (these are the first things that come to mind right now): Guitar: -Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme): Midnight Express -Anything from Nuno in Pornograffitti & 3 Sides to Every Story -Anything from Blues Saraceno -Petrucci in Voices, Scarred, Lie, (the end of) Innocence Faded -S. Vai: For The Love Of God -Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne): No More Tears

Bass: -Have any of you seen Stu Hamm live? I saw him with G-3 and he played tha best bass solo I've ever seen. For those who have: you know what I'm talking about; for those who haven't: I'm Soooo Sorry

Keyboard/Piano: -DerShe at the end of Take The Time (Awake tour) -Kevin Moore: Take The Time, Scarred -DerShe: A Change of Seasons -The whole keyboard part on Steve Vai's Fire Garden Suite (I believe it's the third part)

Drums: -Any Mike Mangini's drum solo on tour with Extreme. This guy probably doesn't ring any bells to some of you, but try to find it, (the only way to see this is in a bootleg -I've got a video-). Believe me IT IS WORTHY. -Have you gone to a Dennis Chambers drum clinic?

That's what I remember so far. See 'ya

Bas is currently on a solo tour, doing mostly Skid Row songs, a few Last Hard Men songs (his new band), and a few covers and Pantera just asked him to open up for them. Word is that the other members of Skid Row are working with a new singer but that the forthcoming album will NOT be under the Skid Row name, since Bas has partial ownership of the name. There were tenative plans for Bas to record a new song with the band for a greatest hits album but the last I heard Bas wouldn't commit to doing it until he heard the music first. For the record, he says that he would love to do another Skid Row record at some point. Personally, I think the big problem is the Rachel Bolan/Bas conflict, but that's just my opinion. Bas is SUCH an amazing singer and a hell of a frontman. The new guy has some big shoes to fill. I'm just glad I got to see Skid Row on their last (for now) tour.Anyway, as far as Subhuman Race being their best album, I have to go with "Slave To The Grind" as being their masterpiece. "Subhuman" had some brilliant moments, but "Slave" was brilliant from beginning to end.

I figger, since I've got a moment, that I'll just blab a little more.

Good guitar solos. Hmmm....there are so many. Favorites of mine:

Metallica: Fade To Black Steve Vai: Call It Sleep, For The Love of God Cream: Crossroads, Sunshine of Your Love Satriani: Flying in a Blue Dream, The Enigmatic Ronald Shannon Jackson and the Decoding Society: Say What You Will Brand X: Not Good Enough -- See Me Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb, Another Brick in the Wall Part II Tony MacAlpine: Autumn Lords, Porcelain Doll Rush: High Tide, Tom Sawyer, Here Again, Freewill

Petrucci's had some moments, too. I guess I'd probably opt for "Under a Glass Moon," for what it's worth.

As far as Genesis goes, the older stuff definitely IS a bit more progressive than the last few albums. Still, it's a little easier to hang one's hat on the Collins-era stuff...and, for whatever failings that reveals of mine, I prefer that to the Gabriel-era stuff. In fact, I'd go so far as to proclaim the Progressive Pop (and that's really what most of it is) of "Invisible Touch" my favorite Genesis album. Which isn't to say that "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet" and "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" aren't great albums, too.

Five Gratuitous CD's: ===================== 1. Rush: Test For Echo 2. Spacehog: Resident Alien 3. John Coltrane: A Love Supreme 4. Weather Report: Heavy Weather 5. Killing Joke: Democracy

Probably my all-time fav solow is Mark Knopfler's during the outro of Tunnel of love. You wannna talk about eargasms, heartmelting, tear-provoking solows! There's nothing more beautiful to me. Be well. Matt B

"That is the truth. Not the hammer and sickle; not the stars and stripes; not the cross; not the sun; not gold; not yin and yang, but the smile... Because they died, we know we still live. Because a star explodes and a thousand worlds like ours die, we know this world is. That is the smile, that what might not be is." (John Fowles, The Magus)

OK, Sorry that I didn't write back sooner but I dumped 7-Up all over my keyboard and fried it last night, so I'm typing a brand spanking new MacPro Plus keyboard (feels strange under my fingers).

Anyway, Syrinx is probably right, I don't know enough about Chris Buzby to call him a dickhead. Let's just say that it this one situation that he could have handled it better than he did from what I read on the FG webpage. I take back what I said about him. As to calling sryinx a jerk that was just as stupid as him saying I have my head up my ass. (Lord knows If I could do that I'd be famous). So, I take that back to. Sryinx has been very cool to me in the past, ahe even taped the Echolyn tapes for me a while back and for that I am most grateful. To the guy who posted the URL for the place selling Suffocating the Bloom THANK YOU!!! Now I don't have to beg for CD-R's (unless it's for \and \every Bloosm or for the self titled) and Echolyn will get their cash. Also to the law student. Thanks for defending my statement about Blockbuster, I knew that it was legal.

to Gia-the Assertive Concert Goer Everyone take it easy on our friend the girl who got to the fron tof the DT show. After all if she wants to consider the best thing about her to be her phyiscal shell, that is her opinion, and it's probably true. A word of advice hon, when you are so stuck on your outside, no body will be interested in discovering what's on your inside. This is not sarcastic. I just thought that you were getting ripped on a little hard.

    Love and Bruises,

"After the confession of sins and before the Act of Contrition, the priest is supposed to ask, Do you sincerely resolve not to commit this sins again? But Father McSwain's hurry-up version was more like "Commit these sins again?-to which I could have sincerely answered yes." -Michael Ryan, Secret Life
