Ok. This is my list of favourite guitar solos. I didn't put anything
    from JP ç
'cause we all know how good they are!
Steve Rothery (Marillion)-'Sugar Mice' this one is as emotive as
Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, already mentioned in the jam
Ace Frehley (KISS)-'Makin' Love' from Alive II: Ace really smokes on
    this one.
Dave Meniketti (Y&T)-'I Believe in You' from Open Fire live album
Yngwie Malmsteen- anything from his first 2 albums
Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow)- ‘Stargazer' any version: live, studio,
    anything
Randy Jackson (Zebra)- ‘Bears' from the album No Tellin' Lies
Frank Hannon (Tesla)- ‘Love Song' from The Great Radio Controversy
    Alex Lifeson (RUSH)- ‘Limelight'
Allan Holdsworth (UK) - anything from UK's only CD with Allan
Vivian Campbell - ‘Rainbow in the Dark' from DIO's Holy Diver
Ian Chrichton (SAGA) - ‘It's Time'
John Sykes or Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy) - Baby Please Don't Go (I
don't know who plays this solo)
Andrew Latimer (Camel)- everything but specially ‘Ice' from the
album I Can See Your House From Here and ‘The Last Farewell' from
    Nude.

As for singers, well Paul Stanley was my favourite rock star when I
was growing up, but Geddy Lee, Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio are
    the best IMHO.

PS: Does anyone know what ever happened to Zebra?

Ok. Many tiny bits of DTC here for you:

           * You know you're a DT fan when you spend 10 minutes looking
to the "Lie" single cover and discover that there's the
             Majesty logo in the pupil of the eye pict. Wow;

           * To you luck owners of the XCD: are there any comments on
who are the "Del Fuvio Monks"?

           * Wouldn't it be nice if we had a video for each tour
completed by the band (Portnoy, hint, hint!)? I mean, we
already have one from the I&W tour and it would be nice to
have others from other tours. It would decrease the need
people have to be looking for bootlegs and the band could
profit from material that they have already performed. Of
course, the worst part would be getting it released by some
label/whatever, but I don't think that this is a serious
problem anymore, since Dream Theater is getting bigger day
after day (they're undoubtedly the biggest band of "the
underground"). But please, two important points: it would
be nice if the band could keep the video *long* (1.5 hours
aren't enough, for the fans need an overdose of DT :-))
and, the second point, if they didn't break the atmosphere
of the show putting interviews in the middle of the
performance -- put the interviews/extra shooting at the
             beginning of the tape, before the show;

           * A live album from each tour (double disc, perhaps) would
also be nice. You'd get all the cool production and
wouldn't have to stick to some shitty boots, where you have
to pretend that you're not hearing the hiss or the lack of
high frequencies. I'm no audiphile, but I do appreciate a
high quality recording. Suggestion for tracks, if it's not
possible/feasible to have a double album from an entire
concert: extended "Metropolis", extended "Learning to
Live", "Caught in Alice's 9-Inch Tool Garden", electric
"Hollow Years", electric "The Silent Man", acoustic "Wait
for Sleep", old "Burning My Soul", old "Lines in the Sand".

BTW, definition of audiophile: someone who listens to the
system instead of the music. :-)

If D-Man, Skadz or other semi-gods could forward this message
to the band, I'd be very much obliged.

           Cya, Roger...

Umm, methinks you misunderstood. :) Read it again; I said Strat. had a Magna Carta-like sound (i.e., they sound like they'd fit in well in MC's stable of bands). I'd never recommend that as a place to go, though, since you're right, MC does jack-shit for promotion.

OTOH, when's the last time Superior, also a Noise Recs band, toured the US? When's the last time you spotted them (or Stratovarius, for that matter) in a US record store? Anyone? Bueller?

Expecting straight dope from me? Uh, okay-y-y.... :) ~~~~~~~~ It's quite interesting -- several different styles, including an opening that immediately reminded me of The Changelings, a band near and dear to both of us (Atlanta's best goth band, for the rest of youse guys :)). I've only listened to it once so far since I'm working thru all five CDs in sequence, and there's a lot to Payne's Gray that demands further listening. I'll post some deeper thoughts on my Website after I listen to it more. (And I have a cassette here from Bernd B. I want to hear soon, too, with Clawfinger and Vanden Plas on it. :))

NP: Symphony X, DIVINE WINGS.... Every bit as good as everyone else has said. :)

Okay Matt Guillory from Chaos Theory has asked for us jammers help. The band will be needing a new name to avoid potential 'legal issues' If anyone has some serious ideas for this please mail ME with your ideas and I will pass them on to Matt.

The band will enter the studio next month to record their debut album but in the meantime check out some soundclips at: http://www.netwiz.net/~vertigo/music.html If you have never heard CT before, check them out, the mp3 files are demo's, but give you an idea of the great potential of Chaos Theory.

If you have some ideas, please mail me, with the subject 'CT NAME'.

Right. I've always wondered how did they manage to stuff that a big voice to such a compact package. Only Doro Pesch tops Dio in that regard. Although Dio's recent (due) double live album "Dio's Inferno: The Last In Live" can beconsidered two pretty sad pieces of plastic, Dio still remains in the ranks of all time vocal Gods to me. Review of the aforementioned album due sometime soon.

Is there any fans of the band THRESHOLD here? I have a few promo CDs from a band called MINDFEED (which includes ex-Threshold members Glynn Morgan (vocals/guitar) & Jay Micciche (Drums) on my hands and I would like to give them away to Threshold fans. First come, first served. Now of course I could sell the promos but that would be immoral, wouldn't it? :) More info about the band at http://www.mindfeed.demon.co.uk/.

Moreover, does someone want to buy two Dream Theater discs? I have extra copies of "Official 1986 Demos" and "Instrumental" on my hands and I would like to sell them. Highest bid of each disc gets it.

Here are some of my opinions on the subjects that have been discussed on the jam lately:

Anna Lee-It's in my opinion one of the very best songs on FII. Extremely beautiful. I love that song so much now, although I wasn't that into it at first. FII as a whole has really grown on me, and I think it's a masterpiece. It's my fave DT-album after IAW.

Symphony X-Am I the only one on the jam that doesn't love the band? I only "like" them. :) I recently bought the Damnation Game and The Divine Wings of Tradegy. I was a little disappionted, they did not live up to my very high expectations. I should not listen to hype, I know. I like the albums, but the masterpiece-quality seems to be hopelessly lacking to me. The band is very tight and skillful, but that's not enough. The songs on TDWOT sound a bit too similar to each other to me. Most of them are fast and aggressive, and the slow , melodic parts are too few for my liking. More songs like Candlelight Fantasies and Winter's Dream would do wonders for the albums as a whole. Endless shredding and double-kick drumming doesn't sound that impressive anymore after an hour of it. I hope their next cd will be more varied. I really love the vocals on the other hand. Allen sounds a lot like Dio, he's almost half as good, and that's already "great" :) If anyone has problems with the Dio-type voice...well, I can't understand that. The song The Divine Wings of Tradegy is very good. The slightly jazzy part is great. I certainly understand why people like SX, but to me they are WAY below Dream Theater, Fates Warning and, dare I say it, even Shadow Gallery. I think I prefer Angra and Artension to SX, too.

Shadow Gallery-Great! One of my favorites. Carved in Stone is really a masterpiece. It might be cheesy in places, but it's cheesy in a Queen-like way, and I have no problem with that. The songs Don't ever cry just remember and Ghostship stand out as the best songs on the album to me.

Genesis-The album Foxtrot (1972) turned me into a fan. Selling England by the Pound (1973) is great too. The 80's stuff is very different. I can appreciate it, but there simply are no songs like "Watcher of the Skies", "Supper's Ready" or "Firth of Fifth" on their later albums. I can't believe that someone said he liked "Where the Sour Turns to Sweet", a.k.a. "From Genesis to Revelation", their first album. You're the first I've heard say that :)

Guitar solos-I feel I have to mention a few ones: Highway Star - Ritchie Blackmore Deuce - Ace Frehley The Messiah Will Come Again - Gary Moore Take the Time - JP Most solos by a guy called Petri Walli who played in a Finnish powertrio called Kingston Wall. The songs Time and The Real Thing are great for example.

..and MANY more...most have been mentioned already. I was happy to see someone mentioned Chopin Fantasie by Ron Thal (hope I got that one right)...that one made my chin drop to the floor when I first heard it.

Don't believe me, just listen to me :)

"Now, guys, I'm sure you'll understand that you *will* record Metropolis II, especially for me, or else I might just have to break your legs . . ."

(I don't normally fantasise about being female. Honestly.)

On a related note, if a good-looking girl were to start fondling me at a concert, I'd stand there and enjoy it. To hell with the music.
