    I return from the darkness

Someone mentioned Devin Townsend as being a great vocalist. I strongly
agree and feel that he is much more than a typical singer. His style is
    totally unique and very strong.

He has a bunch of different projects with the two main ones being:
Strapping YOung Lad - this is some VERY HEAVY stuff that leans towards
industrial/metal/black/angry stuff and it's almost like a wall of noise
but it's really good for those who can take the pressure. Devin also
    plays guitar.

Ocean machine - now this is truly a masterpiece in my opinion. It's a
mixture of all sorts of different styles ranging from SYL type stuff to
more progressive sounding tunes and this also features Devin's strongest
vocal work. For any Devin fans out there from his Vai/Working Man stuff
I STRONGLY suggest you check this out as it ranks as a top five 97
    release in my book.

Anyone want a demo tape from a friend of mine? It's progressive heavy
stuff (with black metal, old school progressive style, metal, and more)
and pretty original stuff. If you are interested check out
    http://members.aol.com/CeaSerin/CeaSerin.html
or email me and I'll give you more details. It's quite good. Check it
    out.
    Thanks
    Phillip

Yes I do, but not everyone on this list likes everything that gets a
    mention here.

HAH ! This is just your opinion :)
Off the top of my head I can rattle off ten albums that IMO are equal to
    I&W
and better than Awake, but I am forbidden by the no top ten rule :)
I do remember you saying that ET 'are better than Angra' which made me
    chuckle :)

ROTFL, c'mon how can it be a fact ?
You have said this, so it 'your opinion' :)
Italy has many young progressive bands that show a lot of promise
Eldritch, Time Machine, Novembre and Epica to name a few.

    > They are 1000 x better musicians than the most other new prog bands (Vanden Plas).

Better than Angra, Payne's Gray ?

There are many alternatives to DT, but no one seems to do it better
    than they can.

I know you tend to be a 'little over the top' Arash sometimes :)
I have listened to the samples and they are pretty good, enough
for me to buy the album sometime soon.

Give em a listen, you could do a lot worse :)

Hey, it's time to calculate once and for all the best Dream Theater album, and I've decided how to do it. Seeing as how I'm always right, it should be quite easy.

First step is to rate each song on each album according to the following scale: 4 - A must hear, Dream Theater classic 3 - Kickass good song, not quite godlike 2 - Pretty good, listen to if you can take the time 1 - Skip fodder 0 - Innocence faded? Never heard of it. No such song.

Then we average the scores so that albums with more songs don't get an unfair advantage over the old days.

So, let's look at the albums.

WHEN DREAM AND DAY UNITE A Fortune in Lies - 2 Status Seeker - 3 The Ytse Jam - 4 The Killing Hand - 3 Light Fuse and Get Away - 4 Afterlife - 2 The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun - 4 Only a Matter of Time - 4 Score: 3.25

    IMAGES AND WORDS Pull Me Under - 2 Another Day - 0 Take the Time - 4 Surrounded - 0 Metropolis Part I - 4 Under a Glass Moon - 3 Wait for Sleep - 3 Learning to Live - 4 Score: 2.5

    AWAKE 6:00 - 3 Caught in a Web - 2 Innocence Faded - 0 Erotomania - 4 Voices - 2 The Silent Man - 1 The Mirror - 4 Lie - 3 Lifting Shadows Off a Dream - 0 Scarred - 4 Space Dye Vest - 4 Score: 2.45

    FALLING INTO INFINITY New Millennium - 3 You Not Me - 1 Peruvian Skies - 2 Hollow Years - 1 Burning My Soul - 2 Hell's Kitchen - 2 Lines in the Sand - 4 Take Away My Pain - 0 Just Let Me Breathe - 2 Anna Lee - 0 Trial of Tears - 4 Score: 1.91

So my conclusion: As far as complete albums go, the band has headed steadily downhill since its inception in average album quality, with a great increase in speed beginning with the current album.

why I gave The Killing Hand a 3, rather than a 4, it's because something about Charlie's voice just rubs me the wrong way in the middle of this song. I don't like James's on LATM, either. Anyone else feel this way?

Yeah. :-) The next step is now prove that every number (natural, integer, rational, real, complex, quaternion, octonion, modulo anything, whatever) is equal to every other, right? :-) We'll be even proving that sets of different cardinalities are the same, huh? :-)) You'll be proving this on Zermello-Fraenkel set theory, right? This way, it will be undeniably right, of course (or we have encountered inconsistency within Mathematics). :-)

Oh, and to a more basic subject, please, don't forget to give your averages weighted by time. :-)

There's another program called 'MP3 Infirmary' that might be able to help you out. You forgot your bias factor of -5... applying that to your rating, everything comes out into the negatives, or zero... so pretty much your opinions = 0.

    Hey folx -

Just a couple of things this time. I know that this has been beaten to death on the Jam before, but I FINALLY got my "Hollow Years" CD Single (I ordered it over a month ago!), and I must say that I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY by how great the demo of "You Not(Or) Me" is!! I'm not sure which deletions/changes were exactly Desmond Childs or Kevin Shirley, but DAMN whomever changed the arrangement and structure of the original! I feel that it is worlds better than the album version, although the changes were so drastic that it sounds like 2 completely different songs to me. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth of a rant. I'm just glad the band released this version to the public. I really wonder if the band is truly happy with the finished product of the song since it's so different (and "watered down", in my opinion) than the demo version. I know that the band really didn't care if Child worked with it since they didn't think it would make the final album cut anyway. I wonder if the band had the power to reject Child's version, or since the label brought in such a famous hired gun, they were compelled (and maybe pressured by the label) to use the new version of the song on the album even if they weren't satisfied with the results? Does anyone know any behind-the-scenes details on this issue?

Secondly, I know a lot of you out there (myself not included) are Enchant fans, and I remember at some point there was an Enchant album that was VERY hard for people to get their hands on. Was it "Time Lost"? I just got a catalog in the mail from Jart Music, and they have a release called "Time Lost" available on pre-order for $22.99. Their phone number is (914) 832-3669, and they're on the web at www.jartmusic.com, in case anyone's interested.

    Hope this helps! Good night...

NP: You Or Me (What else?)

PS: Has anyone heard of a Japanese CD called "Guitar Battle"? Jart has it advertised as featuring John Petrucci, along with a bunch of others like Al Pitrelli, George Lynch, and Steve Morse. Does anyone have any idea what tracks JP plays on? I also really like Pitrelli's work in 'Tage, is this CD worth getting?

    Hello there....

I have to add this in... Drum Solo's... It has to be none other than Randy Castillo NOT!! Actually I would say Peart... His solos really "Flow" better than anyone else that I have ever heard. Everything seems to "mesh" together perfectly. As for drummers that kick ass that haven't been mentioned... Mark Zonder.. In fact, I was listening to Fates today...AWESOME. The music industry modeled the Metronome after him... He created it. Flowing, unique is all that can describe Mark Zonder. If you haven't heard it.. GET IT! Later, J
