I disagree. Many of the die-hard prog fans say The Light is the best one,
but in my opinion this band just gets better with every album released and
which is why I'd recommend their latest, "The Kindness of Strangers", as
their best. The Light probably has the most progressive elements just
because all the songs are so long, but it seems morel ike it rambles from
section to section as opposed to the new one which has JUST as much prog in
the form of catchier tunes. 3 of the songs are over 10 minutes and the
other four are around 5 minutes for a perfect balance. It's a much more
comfortable listen if you ask me. Beware of Darkness is their middle cd and
strikes a good balance between The Light and Kindness of Strangers. Of
course, since SB is one of my favorite bands, all their cds are must haves.
So just start with their latest and work your way backwards, you won't be
    dissapointed!

I've noticed over the years that a lot of metal differs from the rock norm:
fast guitar songs will have a slow solo either guitar or piano to break up
the monotony, and ballads will usually have a long and loud guitar solo
    under the same principle.

Yup, see, Ryan now knows it as well as I do... half the delay in
getting CDs out is waiting for the damned print shops to finish with the
liners!! :) Of course, everything beyond that lands squarely on me.

Now that Al has paid Pat, as soon as I catch up the shipping backlogs
(it's gettin closer), the Ytsejam will clearly enter into a new golden
age of ideals and emotions, where the lion will lay beside the lamb,
and... enh, well, I dunno, as long as we eventually get to have a
    Ytsecon IV, I'll be content.

Here's the news nobody cares about: I move on 1/29, and my phone lines
don't go in until 2/4. I'm trying to get the cellular turned on just for
voice, but I won't be able to log in much because I don't have an
interface and all my e-mail is routed to local. Expect that update on
2/4 instead of 2/1. Other than answering e-mail, my work will continue
    without interruption.

Also, I got the CD painter. I'm learning how to use it, and I'll
incorporate it into print runs as soon as possible. This thing just
kicks royal ass. As soon as Verbatim silver/blues become silver/silvers
in March/April as announced, my products will look exactly like pro CDs!
    Party time!!

I must have zapped the orignal digest for the Dio subject, but I heard this on the radio yesterday. A beer company wanted to use the Rolling Stones 'Paint It Black' for a commercial, and thought they would have to pay big bucks for the rights, but when they finaly got hooked up with the band, all Mick and the Boys wanted was some Jerseys from a soccer team the beer company sponsored, and a couple cases of beer each. Must be nice to insanely rich and to old to care anymore. P.S. on that note, forwarded to me on the net. Thought the FEW older jammers might like these.

Top 8 surprises on the Rolling Stones tour!

=95#8 - Reduced box-office take due to frequent use of AARP discount cards.=20 =95#7 - Hell's Angels hired to circulate crowd and "entice" people to switch from AT&T to Sprint=20 =95#6 - Old smell: booze with a hint of pot. New smell: Poli-Grip with a hint of Ben Gay. =95#5 - Slightly senile musicians toss in an occasional Beatle's song.=20 =95#4 - Tour bus drives at 25 miles an hour with left blinker constantly flashing.=20 =95#3 - There's a distinct resemblance between Keith Richards and that "Weekend at Bernie's" guy=20 =95#2 - Famous enlarged lips logo replaced by enlarged prostate logo.=20 =95#1 - Lump in back of Mick's pants noticeably larger than lump in front of Mick's pants.

RS fans, don't flame me, I'm only the messenger. =20

On another topic, Fave solo's include THUNDER---just about everything thing they do (most of the US jammers have never heard of them, but you UK and JAP jammers WILL know), several RATT songs, and TESLA, again just about everything they do.=20 BTW, there is a movement (ala OFB petitions) to get TESLA back together. > With all of this talk about guitar solos floating around, I have a > question for everyone. WHY? Why has music gotten to the point where > every song needs a guitar solo? Is it the guitarist's ego? Is it the > trappings of convention?

I'll explain this to you as best I can. Music that has real guitar soloing these days, tends to be marketed towards musicians. I have to believe that most of DT's fans are or have tried to play instruments at some time or another. To a open minded, honest musician (not the kind of person who says "This guys slow... turn it off" or "Where's the double bass? No distortion? You call this MUSIC?!?") a "GOOD" solo speaks as clearly and precisely as any vocal line, any witty set of lyrics, or any deep thought... it is the "GOOD" solo that real guitarists strive for when they record an album... to express their emotion in a language with no words. So why does every song in this genre have a solo? Because A). the record companies push for it, as a lot of them haven't caught on to the fact that technical prowess is no longer the be all and end all, B). because they're trying, whether they fail or succeed, to create a "GOOD" solo, or C). because they live in 1987 and still wear vinyl pants with the ass-cheeks cut out of em. "GOOD" solos are not on most albums, or played by most guitarists, but there are enough of them out there, that we can list tens of them off the tops of our heads. Heed my prophecy though... the day is coming when DT's albums will have guitar solos on less than half of the songs. This vision was delivered to me by a pizza induced dream, in which I was boarding the Titanic with Mike Portnoy and my girlfriend, in her old 82 Ford sky blue station wagon, filled with pop tart wrappers and empty pop cans, so you KNOW it's the real shit!

And now, everyone cheer, for Marcel has a 7 string!!! WOOO HOOO! "One of us! One of us!" Muahahaha!

    The topic:

How does one go about copyrighting a song (in the US)? Does it have to be finalized, or can it just be an idea/fragment or a demo?

    Thanks bunches.

Wow! A discussion of Warrant and Firehouse has started and I wasn't the one who started it! This is cool. Anyway, the only thing "grunge" about "Subhuman" is that there are less guitar solos than "Slave" and the production ( I'm normally a Bob Rock fan, but his work w/ this album doesn't thrill me). But musically I wouldn't call it grunge. Someone once said (I think it was a review of "Subhuman" in Rolling Stone) that one of Skid Row's biggest assets is/was that they aren't/weren't purists. Subhuman has everything from balls out heavy metal (the title track) to punk (Bonehead) to pop (Into Another, Breakin' Down). As far as Warrant is concerned (one of my all-time favs), there last two albums have been a departure from their signature pop metal sound. But only "Ultraphobic" comes across as being "grungy" (and really that's only for the first three songs). "Belly 2 Belly" seems more in the brit-pop vein. But you'll be happy to know that the band is planning on returning to full-on glam for their next release in both look and sound. In the interim, Jani will release an acoustic album (it's a side project, but really its a solo album) under the name of Jabberwocky. As for Firehourse, I really liked them when they first came out. Their debut rocks. But what you consider as being their strength (that they never change) I think is their greatest weakness. Their next album "Hold Your Fire" really pissed me off. It's basically their debut album with different lyrics. And if you think I'm kidding, put on "When I Look Into Your Eyes" and while it's playing sing the chorus to "Love Of A Lifetime" and see what happens. It's scary. "3" was a little more experimental. But check out their all-acoustic "Good Acoustics" album. They do acoustic versions of their old songs as well as a couple of new ones. THIS album is incredible. Sorry for the rant.

Yeah... this message adds some more to the thread that had been here about vocalists.. just MHO... Ian Gillan - esp. his early works with DP are simply great!!! only mention here Child In Time, esp. the concert version!!! Yeah... KJLB is one of the best for sure... personally I think that he has something from Gillan - high notes, maybe (???) I also think that Hansi Kuersch of Blind Guardian does a grat job as a vocalist, esp. on their 1995 album... and I suppose that a lot of people would disagreewith me about that, but here I'd also like to mention Devin Townsend, I haven't heard any of his work with his band, but his singing on Vai's S&R and on Working Man is just awesome!!! Yeah!!!!

Songs to be put on it include; an accoustic version of "The Accolade", some Gothic sounding Simon & Garfunkle song (I'd remember the name if I heard it), & one of the songs off their 1st album w/ Russ redoing the vocals (obvioulsy). You'll also get TOUR DATES soon!!!!

Another thing which kinda fits recent JAMs... Jason Rullo is OUT. I'll get ya more info on the new drummer when I can. It's Tom, something.... I don't know where else he's played.

    Hi

Since I've got no response about EMPTY TREMOR, here is my last call to you.

You call yourself "OPEN MINDED PROG MUSIC FAN" yes ?

Here in the jam, we have more than 1500 people. I just wounder that only 4 persons have mailed me about Empty Tremor and how to order the best album since Images and Words/Awake.

Empty Tremor from Italy are doubtless the best new prog band. It's not only my opinion, it's a fact. They are 1000 x better musicians than the most other new prog bands (Vanden Plas).

Since Dream Theater (before FII), Empty Tremor are the band with the most complexity and talent. The only alternative to DT ?!?!?!

After only 1 album, they are on the strong pressure from their lable. Their record company think THAT EMPTY TREMOR ARE TOO PROG. They sould change their style from Prog at it's best to power metal like Rhypsody or Helloween. Don't forget, that Empty Tremor are signed with a small lable ! What would happend if they were on a big lable. Even more pressure.

We "PROG FANS" must help bands like Empty Tremor to survive. These guys are young, they have no childrens, so for now they can stand against the pressure and make the music they want to do. But in just a few years, when they need money for their families, they will make the kind of music, that the lable wants. Look at Dream Theater !!! Btw, Dream Theater are on a major lable. If we prog fans would buy the records that the new prog bands have made, maybe for the future, they can make the music they want. Belive me there is a chance for bands from small record companies

I've made some samples from their incredible album "APOCOLOKYTOSYS" on my page. Please check them out and tell me what you think. I'm sure, that most of you will love this band.

Sure they are influenced by Dream Theater and sometimes they sounds a bit like Dream Theater, but most of the band members were just 14 years old when they recorded their album !!! So give them a chance. You can order Empty Tremor's album from the following mailorders:

    http://www.Knightsofthersound.com/home.htm http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd/progmetal.htm (Lazer's Edge)

If you like to read some reviews of the band and their "APOCOLOKYNTOSYS" album, look the the following places :

I remember thatI've tried the same thing with Shadow Gallery 2 years ago. Look now, they are really populare. Thank you for your understanding and stay prog. Sorry for "NDTC" !

Well...as far as "alternatives" to Dream Theater, I'm quite impressed (i.e., FLOORED) by some of the bands that some of yous guys recommended like Symphony X and Savatage an' Stratovarious an', can't forget Iron Savior, and Lemur Voice an...well, I could go on. I think we've all read enough of the "subjective vs. objective" bullshit on the jam so I'll just not go there (you can back order the entire thread for only $19.95!!! Supplies are limited, buy now!). But I will check these guys out, and see what they're worth. Hopefully, they'll cream my corndog when i do get a good listen, and if not, tough shit. :)

I'm all for the prog metal thing man...Mesa Boogie and complex polyrythms forever! Yeah baby! But I have other things to worry about than the daily diet and current lack of employment and/or popularity of an Italian prog metal band...like MY own daily diet and current lack of income. All I can do is get a listen and enjoy the music, and pass the holy word of prog metal to the common sheep...er...passerby's who happen upon my scraggly-haired presence. Anyhoo, that's just my bubble of hot air.

~Eckie, the artist, guitar-wanker, babbler, air-headed drawing major extraordinaire (don't eat the charcoal)

P.S.- Regarding that thread questioning the speed-metal-ity of Symphony-X and other bands....I'll just add my nipple to the rotting pile an' say that if S-X doesn't show flashes of speed metal (THE DOUBLE BASS! LISTEN TO THEM CALVES OF STEROIDS!!!) then Green Day's a fuckin' death metal band. It might be due to the fact that ppl think of scratchy, shouting vocals when you say "speed/thrash metal", and they figure, It can't be speed/thrash metal without the fuckin' chihuahua! An' Symphony-X doesn't do the scratchy shouting voice thingy....
