Holy shit. According to the rules of the Ytsejam Drinking Game, we now
have to "Drink Everything In Sight."

    I guess I'll be off on a weekend-long bender.

I agree. Definitely start with "The Light". It's so diverse, it would be
hard to be disappointed. You should like "The Light" on the first listen.

I have the new one, "The Kindness of Strangers". It's taking a while to
soak in, but it's growing on me. (PS. I don't like the new cover, it's just
plain ugly. Washed out and olive drab. Emphasis on drab.)

Pat Travers was a fantastic player at one time. He was even on the
    Valley
Girl soundtrack with the song "I la-la-la love you..." Not much of a
    guitar solo,
as I recall, but the song had a funky feel to it. Let me put it this way...
    The
song made the movie worth watching.

I have some friends that saw Pat Travers at Peabody's Down Under in the
Flats of Cleveland over 10 years ago. The show started late because Pat
was backstage snortin'. Yeah, snortin' whiskey and drinkin' cocaine. ;)
His playing was sloppy and with Pat Thrall and Tommy Aldridge out of the
band by that point, the show was lack-luster, to say the least.

One of his better albums was Putting It Straight. That one just rocked.
It was one of those that you'd start on track one and just let it go. Crash
And Burn is more popular, yeah. His version of Born Under A Bad Sign
is NOT to be missed. The solo in that song is a scorcher! Give it a
    listen.

That's it for now. Till next time, G.

Enough of this guitar and bass crap. Lets start a new topic: Nose harp solos.
I can definatly see some of the influences in Dream theater. Like the keyboard
solo in 6:00 sounds exactly like German IJilimy's nose harp in "el diablo de
la Nariz". I'm interested to hear other opinions on this exciting subject.

Well... I gotta say, all this is quite hilarious: drummer, guitarist, and
bassist bashing, etc... but on an interesting DT content note... I would
say that Portnoy has one hell of a stage presence, for being a drummer.

I hate all solos except for Ukelele solos...

As for that Symphony-X band, yes, Rick hit it on the head, I only "like" them,
but I don't think they're the next best thing since paved roads.

Here's my vote for Bafu taking over the FAQ... ;)

I think you raise some good questions and I have a few thoughts on the matter. First off, let me state that I'm a guitarist so you know where I'm coming from.

Part of the reason for the prevalence of guitar solos certainly stems from convention. You're a rock/hard rock/metal band and you write a song, you gotta leave room for the guitar solo. I don't think this is always an ego thing - many listeners love to hear the solos (including myself), and guitarists love to play them. I'd call it more of an expression of a guitarist's lead style than an ego trip. There are probably exceptions to this, however. I also happen to disagree w/ your statements regarding EVH. I think VH songs are CERTAINLY written around the guitar, but that's because the guitar is meant to dominate that music (with notable exceptions like "Right Now"), and the rhythm parts are often as cool as the solos.

Also, I often find that the guitar solo offers a much needed break from the rest of the song. It's an interlude, a diversion, a contrast to the vocal verses and (usually) repetitive rhythm playing of the rest of the band under the vocals. I think one or more such diversions is ESSENTIAL in most pieces of music.

Now, does this diversion HAVE to be a guitar solo? No way. Even as a guitarist, I'd love to hear more bands doing the whole band unison/counterpoint instrumental jams that characterize songs like "Take the Time" and "Metropolis". Unfortunately, most bands probably aren't creative or talented enough to pull it off well. I wouldn't mind hearing more keys or bass solos as well. How about an airy, space-filled interlude? A tempo change, mood change, something else? How about the "Close my eyes..." line in TTT - what an awesome mood change!

My point is that something needs to break up the song and inject some contrast, and in rock the default "something" is a guitar solo. Yes, they're overused, but IMO that's because the guitar is such an incredibly versatile instrument that it can sound so vastly different and unique in each individual's hands.

    jam on it, -Neil. nevans@us.oracle.com

Divine Wings Of Tragedy. Essential on the Joe Scale (tm). I think the title song is possibly the second best prog metal song ever. I rate this album #3 behind I&W. You'll find it for the lowest price at the Laser's Edge: http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd

    > Angra - I know nothing about them. Me being a HUGE DT fan, what album > should I start with?

Holy Land. Essential on the Joe Scale (tm). I think Carolina IV is the best prog metal song ever. I rate this album #2 behind I&W. Again for the lowest price, go to the Laser's Edge.

Many consider it cheesy, I consider it classy. Essential on the Joe Scale (tm). I bought Carved in Stone the same day as ACOS and there's no comparison. I rate this album #4 behind I&W. No screaming 80's metal sound. Laser's Edge does not have the best price on this. Order it from your local Best Buy/Blockbuster/ Media Play/Circuit City to register the sale on their computers. It is possibly the best-disguised concept album ever done.

What's the straight dope on > this one? Is it worth Ken Golden's raves?

I have a difficult time recommending this album to people because it's so different from the typical generic DT/QR-influenced prog metal. I'd say it would have a very strong appeal if you are from more a straight progressive rock background (I'm talking Gong/Camel/Gentle Giant - out there prog rock not pop prog rock ie. Yes/Genesis/ELP). It is not likely to appeal to those with strictly hair metal/power metal tendencies. Ken's raves result from the fact that is so different and unique that it practically defies simple pigeon-holing. It is Progressive Metal with a CAPITAL Pee. The mood and the vibe that the band brings to this music and this story is unbelievably intense. It is a very difficult album to absorb from mere casual listening - it demands your attention and blows you completely away when it finally gets it. If you are tired of cookie cutter progressive metal, and looking for something absolutely fresh and exciting, check out this album - Its only $15 at the Laser's Edge.

"Wille Raab" <raab@mail.bip.net> asked: > what is it that makes a guitar solo good?

That vague and difficult to describe feeling in my gut/heart/mind. Simply put, it's some sort of subjective, positive reaction.

    >Matt Tedesco wondered: >>With all of this talk about guitar solos floating around, I have a >>question for everyone. WHY? Why has music gotten to the point where >>every song needs a guitar solo? Is it the guitarist's ego? Is it the >>trappings of convention? >

Standard song/verse pop-music compositions require a bridge. Standard rock/hard rock/heavy metal requires the bridge to be a guitar solo. Many guitar solos ,while being technically impressive or emotionally moving, really don't do much more than allow the guitarist to stand alone in the stoplight, be it ever so briefly. Many guitar solos don't really fit in with the song at all. This is true even among progressive metal bands, even with "Our Favorite Band". The solo in Under a Glass Moon does not function as a bridge. It does not add anything musically to the composition. It's purpose is simply as a demonstration. [suppress desire to flame]. Sure it's great fun and great entertainment, but take it out and nothing is lost (to me).

So yes, I'd say that it is a combination of ego and convention. The term progressive would tend to make one think that conformity to these conventions is no longer necessary.

Listening to Alex Lifeson on post Moving Pictures and pre-Counterparts Rush, almost everything done by Steve Rothery, and JP's work on FII, I'd have to say that guitar solos can be done in an "ego-less" manner and still be both expressive and impressive.

"L. Jason Hartman" <lhartm1@gl.umbc.edu> wondered: >Which one should I get? Reaching Horizons, Evil Warning, or Freedom Call?

If you are eventually going to get all of them (and you should), get Evil Warning first. It is becoming very difficult to find(unless Empire Entertainment decides to re-press it someday) and it has such cool artwork. If you are looking for content and prefer Holy Land - get Freedom Call. If you prefer Angel's Cry - get Reaching Horizons.

Pat Daugherty <pdaugher@bdmserver.mcl.bdm.com> astutely observed: > If it sounds good, that is what matters to me.

    Amen, brother.

Marcel Coenen <mcoenen@cobweb.nl> mused: > At first I want to react on the magna carta thread lately, we are on the > Magna Carta label and it is true that their support is way too little, but > on the other hand it is a very good label because all their bands are > really bands they are in to, and with a lot of recordcompany's it just > isn't true, they only want to earn some money, well, for earning money we > just play the wrong kind of music, I really think that progressive music > isn't commercial at all, I mean, how may prog bands are really making big > money with their music ???

At the risk of sounding slightly cynical, I'll bet Mike Varney doesn't mind not spending the money to send his bands on tour. :-) Or maybe he views Magna Carta bands as just studio bands like he does his Shrapnel bands.

"Seven Wonders", the MP3 CD-ROM containing Mike Bahr's first seven Dream Theater boots, is now officially sold out. <wiping away a tear> I'll offer it for replication soon without the bonus bootleg, "Mind Control", which can be found on my second DT release, "Spinning Years", anyway. If none of this makes sense, please visit the URL below for more information on MP3s and the nature of my compilation CDs.

Secondly, I'm proud to say that my first Rush regular audio CD, "Run Faster" is going to begin shipping on Monday. I just received the liners in today from the new print shop that I just switched to, and I just about peed in my pants. It's a magazine-quality full-color liner. I can't wait to send off all my future liners to this place, because this release looks as professional as a top-of-the-line Italian bootleg company, minus the fact that it's on CDR. =) I will begin shipping off all pre-orders on Monday. Thank goodness, because this awesome disc was supposed to ship on December 1st. Even the smallest operations like mine can suffer from delays, eh?

Thirdly, I'll open for pre-orders for my upcoming Van Halen release within the coming weeks.

For information on all the above plus lots of other Dream Theater and Rush goodies, please visit the URL below my name.

Take it easy, Ryan Whitaker Scarred Records http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236
