Bzzzzzzzzzzzt! Wrong, thanks for playing. James was involved in an ATV
accident while hunting which required 40 stitches in his head. Then he quite
simply got it cut. And IMO, they never sold out, Ptacek is wrong (which he
has every right to be), and Kevin Smith should direct the DT movie. The
Silent Men, Silent Bob and John Myung, could unite. Derek could be Rick
Derris. Portnoy could get into a fight (box?) with Jason Lee. Petrucci could
argue "6-string vs. 7-string" with Ben Affleck. And James could get his weed
    from Jay. Snoochie boochies.

"Apogiatura" (/appogiatura/appogiattura/appoggiattura) is a nonchordal tone which approaches by leap and ends by step. Jumping from C# up to F# and then down to F is an appogiatura. Sopranos do this a lot. The opposite of this, to approach by step and resolve by leap, is called an "escape tone." The extremely memorable melody from "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" gives a good example of an escape tone, just play D-E-C on a piano or other instrument. The starting note doesn't really matter, the progression of the notes is what makes them escape tones.

"Melisma" is a virus that attacks a musician's central nervous system and makes what they write/perform very busy and complicated. Mariah Carey became afflicted with melisma at an early age, hence her habit of singing eleven different notes on every syllable she sings. It's not her fault, as there is no known cure for melisma, just monthly treatments which have been known to make one's music more withstandable to the human ear. Some stubborn, prideful victims of melisma, such as Yngwie Malmsteen, go on writing music for years and years without any treatment at all until the damage is irreversible.

During my drive across the country (from Seattle, Washington, to Bethesda, Maryland), I happened to stop along the way in the city of DeKalb, Illinois. There I had the distinct pleasure of jamming with Mr. Chris Ptacek. We traded licks for about two hours. To all the unenlightened who think there's any truth at all in throwing around comments like "Chris Ptacek is an arrogant moron who doesn't know shit about the guitar and can't play a lick to save his life": I'm sorry to inform you that he has mad skills. Mad-crazy-dope-fly- diesel skills to be exact. I think this mailing list is in total agreement that Chris thinks differently than everyone else and seems to actually ENJOY arguing with people, but saying he can't play the guitar is like saying Pat Daugherty can't hold a grudge. And for once in like five years I know what I'm talking about because I was there, axe-to-axe, trying to keep up with all eight of Chris' fingers running around the fretboard like so many wild ferrets...

Several of you have asked me "Where'z the FII demos? I can't find them on 'Under A Cyber Moon' anymore!" To which I say, "Here's the URL. (http://www.webspand.com/system/mp3/Dream_Theater/FII/Demos)" They should be there, as I checked as recently as last night. (I also found "Eve"! All of it!) Which brings me to another point. They all seem to be scrambled! I used uncook, so now they're all right, but I think we Ytsejammers should put up a page with all of them, suitably unscrambled. Are there any volunteers to offer web space? Dr. Mosh, perhaps? Itchy? I would offer myself, but as some or most of you know, I'm either on an AOL account or someone else's MindSpring account, so I don't exactly have space to spare. I have the Burning My Soul and Cover My Eyes demos and Eve that I could e-mail or ICQ to the person who will host them, and I plan on downloading the other FII demos, as well.

Referring now to the Dream Theater/Spice Girls movie, the five members of DT all have distinctly different personalities, but at least they weren't manufactured like the Spice Girls! What the hell is up with that? Are those their actual personalities, or are they simply actresses with great bodies that could sing, too? Also on the DT movie front, maybe we should do something like "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" or "Voltron" and have the five members of DT all have smaller robots which all combine into a bigger robot to kick some serious ass, like when "Hansor" (the evil bad music demon) decides suddenly to grow 30 or forty feet in size. Portnoy would be the torso of the thing, with a huge ass bass drum robot. Petrucci and Sherinian would be the arms, with keyboards and 7-string guitar robots. I think Myung could be both legs (one would be a Chapman Stick robot, and the other would be a 6-string bass robot), and LaBrie could be the head...well....with...a...James LaBrie he! ! ! ad robot! Yeah!

    ..or perhaps not...

After reading this page in the Laser's Edge catalog http://www.jersey.net/~lasercd/progmetal.html, I wish I was independently wealthy so I could order a bunch of this stuff. I've seen mentions of some of these bands in the 'jam but there's others that I have not seen mentioned.

Check it out if you haven't.

It might be interesting to have jammers post a quick agree or disagree and why with this guy's opinion for bands/CDs they have purchased (other than the ones we've already seen reviewed such as Angra, Symphony X, Superior etc)

Based on the recent dialogue, I ordered Superior/Behind and Symphony X/DWoT. I hope they are a better match to my interests than my first foray into CDs from jammer input: (I jumped on these leads too quickly in hindsight):

--- Shadow Gallery was ok in parts, had a couple tunes I hated, too classical, not enough Metal --- Enchant just didn't do enough for me, I say it's prog ROCK, not my style (prog METAL) --- Fates APSoG was right on!

I have one copy of the Jap FII left for distribution. (Unopened, with the bonus CD). This is now a collector's item. I will now be a prick and conduct an auction with the bids starting at $80.

Shit, just kidding. I will sell it for US$25, US postpaid. Cash or MO only. I am not gouging you. When I bought it, the dollar was not as strong as it currently is. This price should be cheaper than anywhere else. And, damn, that little 3 inch CD is soooo cute !! Hear how TAMP is *supposed* to sound. And, hear Speak to Me.

Let me know how fun it is to be in ACK mode ........
