/me raises his hand. "Present!"
Iced Earth is a kickass prog metal band. I saw 'em play for the first time
at this past year's Dragon*Con and they put on a *hell* of a live show
with lots of energy and high-quality musicianship.
Recent developments in the Iced Earth camp include the departure of
drummer Brent Smedley and guitarist Randy Shawver. According to the band,
Randy had been growing disillusioned with the whole music thing for some
time, but Brent's departure was a bit of a surprise; he left because he
didn't want to move up to Indiana with the rest of the guys. The band is
searching for replacements.
The guys are also moving ahead full speed with writing for the next album.
Jon Schaffer has mentioned a possible release date of June or July for the
as-yet-untitled album. Songs include "The Reaping Stone," "Disciples of
the Lie," "Melancholy (Holy Martyr)", and "Watching Over Me," which Jon
wrote about the death of a close friend.
Iced Earth deserves your support since they're very talented and play
great music. Drop by their site at http://www.icedearth.com/ for info on
what's up with the band. Listen to soundclips there too; if you haven't
heard their music you're in for a pleasant surprise.
Cheers,
Phil

Ben Affleck played "Buttman" in Mallrats, and the main male character (the
penciller of Bluntman and Chronic) in Chasing Amy. He's in a couple of
new non-Kevin Smith movies this season, Good Will Hunting (Will Hunting's
friend in that one, I believe), and another, rather bad movie that I can't
remember the name to.

Craig asked who Ben Affleck is.
Ben Affleck is a great actor. Check him out in "Chasing Amy", "Mallrats",
"Phantoms", "Good Will Hunting", and the upcoming "Armageddon" (which looks
SICK).
Craig also said, regarding the Spice Girls,
>Are those their actual personalities, or are they simply actresses with
great bodies that could sing, too?
You smoke pounds of weed every day. :)

BE---EEEEEEE Wrong! Okay, that's really gay, I admit it. But at least I
can agree with Jack. Since we're not going to have an objective third
side to the story, even with Kuba and the DT Rating System guy, then I can
never be told as a matter of fact that I'm wrong, and can never offer you
a matter of fact that you're wrong. You can question my understanding of

Well, I appreciate the humor, but I guess I was really trying to
allude to a more serious point (while poking a little good-natured
fun at the proposed ratings system). Now, I am sure that there are
lots of people on this list who will disagree with what I am about to
say, just as I am sure that there are many who will agree with it.
The point I was trying to make (in a round-about way) is that, IN MY
OPINION, Images & Words will one day be looked back on as (and to
some extent is already considered to be) THE defining album of the
prog-metal genre. And, again IN MY OPINION, I&W is just about as
damn near perfect as an album can get. Still, I'm NOT saying that
it couldn't possibly be any better. I think it would be even better
if they eliminated the fade-outs on Take the Time and Learning to
Live, and if they could have fit A Change of Seasons on the disc
without leaving anything off. But I easily place it among my top 5
albums of all time.
The upshot of all this is that I think Dream Theater really has had a
tough act to follow in Images & Words. But I also think that they
have done an awesome job of following it. Awake, A Change of
Seasons, Falling Into Infinity -- each one of these is a masterpiece.
But I look at these albums as equivalent to Pink Floyd's Wish You
Were Here and Animals. Both of these albums are classics, and are
filled with great music, but neither of them quite stands up to Dark
Side of the Moon. (Of course Pink Floyd went on to make The Wall, so
occasionally you can improve on near-perfection.)
Just my (lengthy) two cents; discuss among yourselves. :)

Days of Purgatory is phenomenal, but go for the 2 CD import. It's only a
couple of bucks more. They cleaned up the production nicely, but the main
thing is the addition of Barlow's voice on their classics (IMHO, anyway).
Looks like we can look for more of an evolution in the style of The Dark
Saga on the next one as well, because it looks like it will be 100% written
by Schaffer (of course) and Barlow.

Well, I downloaded the Lines In The Sand demo from the (probably hidden) site with five of the FII demos, and all I've got to say is "Wow! What a difference!" If Burning My Soul was neutered by either DT or Kevin Shirley, than this one got a couple of extra testicles (KevMo's, maybe?) grafted onto itself during the FII production. The FII version of LITs is as much better than the demo as the demo verson of BMS was better than the FII version. For one, at least on this MP3, the demo's um...about...5 minutes shorter. I don't know that this is the full song (the MP3 might have been clipped for "Internet considerations", i.e. the best modem most people have is a 28.8 or 33.6), but if it is, I can understand why the FII version didn't seem to "feel like a DT epic usually does." The song structure is closer to things like "Pull Me Under" or (stretching it a little) "New Millenium". However, in the expanding of the song, a few more verses (including some of the better ones) w! ! ere added, and a little more improvisation was done. Overall, much better.

Are these FII demos really demos, or live cuts from the Fix shows? I noticed that LitS on the CiAmsterdam boot is also not up to par with the FII version, with verses missing and some added parts that actually inhibited the song's flow.
Anyway, can we compile a full list of FII era material that the die hard fan has to have. I can't seem to keep up with it all, being that there are 6 or 7 unreleased tracks, plus now there's this talk of demo versions of some of the released songs.
Here's what I know of (some I have, some I don't). Correct this list if you see a mistake/omission:
Speak to Me (Jap FII) TAMP demo (Jap FII) The Way it Used to Be (HY single) You or Me demo (HY single) Cover My Eyes Raise the Knife inst. (on one of Bahr's CDs, and Spinning Years MP3 compilation) Raise the Knife with vocals Where Are You Now? LitS demo BMS demo
what did I miss?
