Depending on who you ask, he's either the guitar player that saved Yes or
destroyed them in the early 80s. Thank Ged the rest of the band has finally
come to its senses and gotten Steve Howe back. (Clearly, I'm in that second
    category. :)

You Yes fans that don't have Open Your Eyes yet, go get it. This here's the
    good shit.

You Yes fans that have OYE and KTA I and/or II, are they worth it?

Well, I think that it is a fine movie. Not the best one that I
have ever seen, but a fine movie, worth hearing the last movement of
    Beethoven's 9th symphony (the famous Schiller's coral).

The message the movie gives is also nice. Go see it. You'll also
be pleased to know exactly which excerpts Dream Theater used in their
    song.

You know, whenever I hear Korn fans talking, they always mention how great the guitarist is because he uses a seven-string to get an extra low sound. I've heard quite a bit of Korn, and I gotta say, sure, it gives him an extra note, but what's the point when all he does is make a bunch of loud, garbled noise? He could do that just as well on a kazoo run through a pitch shifter and fuzz box. I don't get it....

Yes, the whispered "Carpe Diem" is definitely from the movie, when the "Captain, My Capitain" Robin Williams was showing his students the people who studied in the school. He whispers to them the "carpe diem". I won't tell you more because it will spoil your fun if you haven't see it yet.

Being at the University far from my discs suck, but I think that there are more than 2 samples from the movie in the song. Maybe 3 (but I'm not trusting my memory anymore)...

I don't know. I just don't HEAR it as a change, which is why I said the "A Farewell To Kings" thing. It's a progression, and a more towards a direction they would eventually assume, but I think there's a reasonably large difference between "Wind and Wuthering" and "...And Then There Were Three." I do see the point you're making, though.

    >Similarly, I wasn't sure where I'd put the ELP changeover. It was beginning >with the Works albums, but "Love Beach" is a whole lot more obvious.

I'll go with you there. I think your "Works" hypothesis is a good one. That's where I'd go with it.

    >As far as Rush goes, I didn't find any particular change in direction with >"A Farewell to Kings," which I still find in the same vein as "2112." >"Signals," however, was a complete turnaround, even more than with >"Permanent Waves."

See above. Yeah, I'm on record here as thinking that "Signals" is the biggest transition the band has made. But I also think "Counterparts" is a bigger break from "Roll The Bones" than "Presto" is from "Hold Your Fire." So perhaps "Wind and Wuthering" is better compared to "Permanent Waves." Hell if I know at this point...

    >We will have yet to see if "Hear in the Now Frontier" will belong in the >list. It could be the last album QR does, instead.

I LIKED the album, which does separate me out a bit here (Adam playing his own press agent: I think my review of the album in _Bass Frontiers_ reflects that), but it IS a little constrained a sound for a band that's historically been pretty expansive.

    >> You ever heard of something called a collectors item? > > Sure do, but as much as you may like the guy, why would you want to >collect Mike Bahr memorabilia? The music is what is important.

My feelings exactly, so how am I, some normal schmoe who loves DT, gonna get the cool recordings that mike has? I dont have a DAT, so I cant get digital copies in trade. I dont HAVE anything to trade even if I did. I could send him cassettes and ask him to record stuff, but he doesnt have the time and I hate cassette quality. Nor do I have the time or energy to hunt down the same recordings from other people. Mike is the easiest source I have, plain and simple.

So where does that leave me? NOWHERE. So my only choice is to pay my $20 ($25 in the heyday) and get a well produced CD full of the music that I want.

Plus, I can say I have something that in some cases, only 499 other people have. And to me, thats cool, worth the $25.

    > Well, visual and music art are different, ya see... you're NOT >GETTING the original copy of the music, no matter how much you beg. >You're destined to only get a copy, whether it's cd, tape, minidisc, >mp3 or what.

Boy, what a profound statement. Of course its a copy. Everything you ever listen to from a radio or stereo is a copy. Its the only way to escape hiring the band to play in your back yard is to play the CD. So why do people go out of their way looking for a Lie single when they could just get someone to copy it? Why buy a FII when you could just get a CD-R from the guy down the block?

Cuz you want the real McCoy. Now youre gonna say that buying a FII supports the band. Just remember that if the band wanted to stop Bahr, they would. Therefore, you dont have a leg to stand on when you say what Mike is doing is wrong, using DT's music for his own profit. If DT doesnt have much of a problem with it, I dont see why you have to bitch and moan about it.

    >Some people consider cd liners to be WORTH the extra $90... I tend to point and >snicker at those people.

Im sorry you dont have the passion that would make it worth it to you to go the extra mile, for at least something. Thats all collectors are doing, spending a little effort (and if needed, money) to satiate the passion that drives them. If you look down upon that passion, I can only feel pity for you.

As a huge Queensryche fan, I feel the need to express my views on where Queensryche will go without Chris DeGarmo.

Can they survive without DeGarmo? Yes, they can. You don't believe me? Who wrote the songs Revolution Calling, Speak, Spreading the Disease, Screaming in Digital, Roads to Madness, Empire, etc.? There are a lot of songs which Wilton has written for the band. The past two albums have been dominated with material by DeGarmo, and frankly, I believe that the newer material he has written isn't the greatest stuff from QR. Michael Wilton has written about 10-15 songs which haven't been used on the past 2 albums, and look for some of those to be on the next album.

And, look for the next album to be _very heavy_. Heavy in the terms that it will very hard rockin'! The new album is about 50% already and _might_ be a concept album.

Lyrically, QR will always be strong. They have Geoff Tate, and I would venture to say that he's one of the best lyricists out there.

And, whoever the replacement for DeGarmo will be, it doesn't matter too much. Queensryche has always been changing their sound, and a new mind in the band will make them that much more diverse. I'm sure they will make the right choice as to who would make the best chemistry for the band.

    Hi there,

I know we're in a DT list but the following is a not confirmed setlist for the new album, Virtual XI.

This checklist was taken in the Iron Maiden Chilean F.C. and according to the F.C. president it's confirmed by Blaze Bayley in an interview during his visit to South America.

Blaze also said to the Brazilian MTV that the new album isn't "dark and down" as the X Factor. Dave Murray confirmed Dave Lights as the new stage producer, so there's gonna be special effects and a giant stage for concerts in big places again.

I don't know if this setlist is real or just an invention by Mr. Bayley but it's what I've got.

    1. FUTUREAL (HARRIS/BAYLEY) 3.00 2. THE ANGEL AND THE GAMBLER (HARRIS) 9.51 3. LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE (MURRAY/HARRIS) 4.49 4. THE CLANSMAN (HARRIS) 9.06 5. WHEN TWO WORLDS COLLIDE (MURRAY/BAYLEY/HARRIS) 6.13 6. THE EDUCATED FOOL (HARRIS) 6.46 7. DON´T LOOK AT THE EYES OF A STRANGER (HARRIS) 8.11 8. COMO ESTAIS AMIGOS (GERS/BAYLEY) 5.26

yeah, but *anyone* could whisper "carpe diem" into a mic in the studio and it would be a lot easier than a sample, while sounding pretty much the same...

Ah man Roger, you made me go consult the FAQ. how could you? :)

anyway, the only DPS sample noted is the "gather ye rosebuds" poem. the line "gather ye rosebuds while ye may" is *sung* late in the song, but that's not a sample. and the "carpe diem" whisper... well, maybe we should ask derek. if we can pry him away from his womanizing. :)

    - the guitar solo of BACK to the FUTURE is done by Tim May not Eddie

    - anyone who knows what Vito Bratta and Jake E. Lee are up to currently?

    - MATt you have that UAGM 2/3 tracks? I'd like to have them! Is one of them this jazzy tune I heard at the end of the German shows

Trevor Rabin was the guitarist for Yes from 1982 (I believe) until 1994. Though he moved Yes into a _very_ commercial-sounding band for an album or two (Everyone remember "Owner of a Lonely Heart"), he's a very talented all-around musician (Guitarist, Keyboardist, Vocalist), and his last album with them, "Talk", has some greats moments in it. Of course, his positives have to be mentioned in conjunction with the fact that, yes, he did write the music for the movie "The Glimmer Man," a crime which is punishable by death in some states. :) Later

To Mike Bahr, I have a copy of Garage Days Rerevisited that I'd be willing to trade. The CD itself is in mint condition, but I no longer have the Jewel case insert (eother front or back)> A friend stole the CD a long time ago and I was left with an empty Jewll box so after 6 month's of not being able to find it, I threw it away. I'd be happy to place it into a new Jewell Box.

Email me back if interested. As qa bonus, I'll throw in the Nothing Else Matters CD single.
