Although OYE isn't my favorite of their numerous styles it's a

put to rest any rumor that the classic epics are not extinct.

Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I get a TON of survey results from the
LSOAR homepage, and a lot of them want "up to the minute" info about DT,
bios, images and stuff like that on the page...is it just me, or does this
TOALLY defeat the purpose of the ring??? I guess I could throw current DT events
on there, but to me it seems kinda pointless. Anyone have any ideas?

    Message-ID: <34D17B12.2604@goodnet.com>

Hi all. I couldn't wait for the phone line replacement... I'm that
addicted to the net... so here I am at 2400 baud. And boy, you all
better hope this never happens to you. I can fix myself a sandwich while
web pages load. Thank God by 5pm on 2/3/98 (can you tell I'm counting
the minutes), I'll be back with a new line.

And what do I see on the Ytsejam but a post of humor at my expense from
Lars Hellsten. Lars, you probably meant it all in good humor (though I
doubt this by the tone and rhetoric of your post) but if you were in
front of me right now, I'd fucking kick your ass. I don't know how
public it had become, but the difficulty Melissa and I are having trying
to get her pregnant is NOT public joke material. I have to
optomistically assume it was a stab in the dark, but the realist in me
knows that gossip has ways of getting around. The rest of the post was
mainly directed at my own foibles, which I can take because I'm used to
being shat on in public, but when you poke fun at my wife, you're toying
with a demon, dude. As Neil Peart himself said once, "That had NO class.
That was NOT moral, and it was NOT funny." I have to hope to assume that
you're just some punk kid, because every adult knows that you just don't
toy with other people's married lives in public. It simply isn't done.

And finally, given as how I sell Lie singles for whatever the market
demand will bear, I fail to see how you can twist such a thing into an
insult directed at me. Everyone and their dog wants a Lie single.
They're rare as hell. They seemed common a few years ago, but just try
getting one *now*. Good fucking luck. When I offer one at $25, and about
50 people offer to buy it, I know that the price was too low comparable
to demand. If I offer one at $30 and only five people offer to buy it, I
know the price is just about correct, comparable to demand. The fact
that you don't understand these simple economics makes me believe even
more firmly that you're just a punk kid.

As for Kevin selling his Subcon disc... good for him. He'll get paid
whatever demand warrants. Subcon is the oldest of the 500-disc boots,
and is thus quite difficult to find as an original silver. You can bet
there is a hardcore DT collector in Japan or Europe or South America who
will gladly pay Kevin the $100 and will be happy they didn't have to pay
$200 for it!! I know these people, and I know how they think. The
Europeans, Japanese, and South American collectors are incredibly
dedicated; they want EVERY CD, every piece of memorabilia they can find,
whether it's tickets, guitar picks, T-shirts, etc. And they will pay
whatever they have to in order to get these things.

Finally, about me saving the DT Lie single to my hard drive. I want to
make this clear here and now. I have not, do not, and will not ever,
pirate any of DT's material. I have an original Lie single in mint
condition and you'd better believe I'm keeping it. I will never copy any
official DT CD for anyone, ever. Period. End of story. For most people,
nobody would care. But since I've been a vocal proponent of bootlegging
as opposed to piracy, this matters here. DT themselves know that I, like
the collectors I spoke of above, want each and every CD I can get.

Sorry to everyone else that my only post this week will have been one
of flames and bullshit, but hey, at least I didn't have anything to say
    about METALL!CA!!!! :) :)

            Take care everyone!

Chris, this is the THIRD time in less than a month that a big debate has surfaced on the Ytsejam about my bootlegs, COMPLETELY independent of me (I didn't even have net *access* while THIS one started up) and once again I see you're at the center of it. I thought you were going to do the honourable thing and drop it. I already have. All this stuff is starting without a peep from my side of the fence and you're jumping in there with guns a-blazing. And I'm sure it's pissing everyone off. You look for the slightest thing posted about anything I do, and then you start a flame war over it, whether I'm there or not. This is so totally sad... I don't know really what more to say at this point other than that I know I can't trust a damn thing you say anymore, particularly when you're agreeing not to start shit on the Jam. I would have thought that you could at least honour a promise you made less than two WEEKS ago to let this shit slide.

    LISTEN UP!

This last thing Joe and Pat and I were arguing is 2 things: 1). NOT IN ANY WAY RELATED TO THE ISSUE OF BOOTLEG PRODUCTION (i.e. Mike Bahr) 2). NOT worth arguing about.

All I was doing was saying that people have an OPTION to save some cash by looking into getting CDR copies of "now out of print" bootlegs and such that some of our "more capitalist" ytsejammers are selling at "interesting" prices. That's it. There's no reason that there should be a debate over that. My views on what's important in a cd/package and someone else's really have no bearing on each other. I was just offering a suggestion. I've already gotten mail from people who think I'm starting the Bahr debate again... and this is not the case. DO YOU HEAR ME, MIKE BAHR? :) Okay... that should clear that up.

    > From: Rick Audet <Ytse@cris.com> > Subject: Re: To Ptacek... > > Aaron High wrote: > > Hey Ptacek, > > How about cuttin' heads, cyber-style? > > Make a short (30-60 sec.) LOL Thanks Rick. I would have skipped that message altogether, because of the weird HTML shit (and that's nothing personal to Aaron... it's just general policy on my part). I have not said anything about my guitar playing except to tell Bafu that I learned a few new tricks, and to tell everyone else that I was undeserving of Bafu's compliment (I thought Bafu was at least as psycho, if not a good deal more solid of a player).

About cutting heads: I'm not into that sort of thing. I'll be happy to offer you the clip I spoke of in my last post, or any newer material I make, but I just don't see value in playing a 30-60 second shred lick to attempt to burn someone down. There's no way that anyone on this list can play everything that I do, and there's no way in HELL that I can play everything that someone else plays. If you're that interested in hearing me play, catch me on IRC, and we'll set something up... but let's kind of take issues of MY GUITAR PLAYING and move them to MY PRIVATE E-MAIL box. This is not a forum in which I'm comfortable discussing what "Chris Ptacek" can play. Whether you realize it or not, there are members of famous bands that you guys all listen to who read this list regularly (we're a musician's soap opera)... I'd have to be a moron to try and attempt to claim some kind of guitar mastery on this list when there are guys here who I still idolize. It's embarassing. Take it to private e-mail.

The ones who know me, know that Im a fanatic keyboarder. Now I heard that Keith Emerson should be really good. I went to the local music store, and the only thing they had got, was a double-CD of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. A bit too much for the beginning. Now I'd like to know, which album, where Emerson plays, would be the right thing for me...

Early last summer I did a net search on Chaos Theory and came across a page with sound samples. They were... Rap / hip-hop or something. I'm not sure exactly the proper term, but whatever they were I couldn't figure out why a mailing list of DT fans were raving about them. Hmmmm...

Well, as a *music* listener, I totally agree. But in this case the collectors want what they want. And they want first-printing, original etc etc. As though it were a basketball card, etc. Those with the means...

I'll say this. I'd pay up to and including $200 for a mint-condition unopened Dream Theater 3" Tears CD from Japan. Not even Mike Portnoy has one. Why should I do this when I have Xmas CD '96 and Tears is right there on it? Because I want that original CD. For reasons totally illogical and irrational.

Well, uh, exactly. My point was that all this shit came up on the Jam, and not only did I not "bring it up", but I had no net access at all! And yet somehow I log on and there you were at the center of it. It may be just a big mistake, but you gotta admit that it had the same look and feel to me as when you see a kid standing next to a kool-aid spill. I'll back off and assume you meant no harm.

For some reason, there is a really high value on silvers... this is nothing I generated myself, for indeed wouldn't my business be better off if nobody cared whether it was silver or CDR... so to them it's not a matter of saving cash, but a matter of getting an authentic item. Personally, I am always bewildered to see ANYTHING I've made sell for more than its original asking price. After all, they're *bootlegs*. But supply and demand works. And people will always buy what they want.

    > Respond to this. You have to see eye to eye with me on this > (whether you agree with what I said, or somehow, disagree).

Fair enough. I'll look at it as a mixup and a crossed signal, and retract my previous statements. I'll go ahead and drop this now (especially since I won't be online again for another 5 to 6 days). :)
