    answer: not very.

    >ACOS... Heh.

I thought he joined in the summer or fall of '94, but either way, the recording
of ACOS we all have is from January '95, so it's at least three years he's
    been the keyboardist.

Still, I also sometimes think of him as the new guy. I wonder how long you
older fans thought of James that way.

Again, Eckie, I know you're just trying to be funny, but there's a
fine line between smart ass and dumb ass :). There has been no
debate with Bahr since a few weeks ago, and I think he and I both
recognize a way to keep it off the list. We've mailed back and
forth, and we're able to be civil about that stuff. All I did now
was remind people that they don't have to pay the "market value" of
$100 or whatever for Subconscious, when people have CDRs. That
has nothing to do with Bahr, and I can't even BEGIN to fathom
why people would criticize me for mentioning it. Please read before
you throw (even hollow cardboard) bricks. :)

The Ytsecd people have been seriously discussing compiling is NOT A
DREAM THEATER TRIBUTE ALBUM. We've tried that several times, and it
doesn't pan out because everyone claims certain songs, and then
people cry about "I started the idea! I should be able to do
    whatever song I want!"
A cd of original music by jammers would be much more interesting, to
me, and would be far simpler to create. If you want to start a DT
tribute cd, please discuss that as a seperate issue from the Ytsecd
    idea. :)

If you liked to check out a real, live, breathing an example of a
tribute, go check out the web site on Gentle Giant:

    http://www.cs.umass.edu/~barrett/gentlegiant.html

or a feature on it (Giant Tracks) at:

    http://www.quackwatch.com/GT/

    Excerpt from the above URL:

"What happens when you mix Gentle Giant, 42 musicians, and the Internet?
The answer is Giant Tracks: a 2-CD tribute album of Gentle Giant
compositions arranged and performed by artists from four countries."

    It's real easy to come up with a bazillion reasons why it won't work;
but bear in mind that these people apparently were able to put aside
their egos and just get on with it :)

Granted these guys are pros, but you may find some ideas on there....

    Regards,

    Jon

ok.....i've been here long enough to remember how many times people have tried to put up a tribute- the silliest idea by any standards. some of you vets here might be able to help me out- is this the 3rd time it's been mentioned here, this talk of the tribute? i'll never forget my favorite, though- last time, people got so mad at each other, that we were going to have RIVAL VERSIONS of a dt tribute (jazzmin v. al, i think it was).

not that i'm going to say "aw, you guys are a bunch of assholes. stop talking about the tribute." that's only if my name were ryan skadberg (sp.?). but otherwise, i could really care less. but all this waste of bandwidth......*yawn*

as for you, mr. merlo, my furry cumquat-to-be: i don't know how "open your eyes" can be any good. i've dreaded the thought of buying. however, if you and new york newsday gave it apparently decent reviews, i might be inclined to.

as for the "keys" cd's. if you show up at the virginia version of tower records with only enough for one cd, PLEASE get the 1st one. i really dislike the 2nd one- it's that horrible. listening to the first one, my thoughts were "cool- they can still play, and the studio songs, though semi-cheesy, are decent." however, with numero dos, i thought:

    a) it sounds like 10 week old smegma b) their age is showing, which is bad. it hurts their live performance. especially a song like "close to the edge", where they played the ending down a step from the original. hmm, can jon be having problems hitting notes up there, or is it that steve likes playing on lower frets?

    gotcha all in check. ytsegoon

Hey I think this project could be succesful if it were seperate from the jam itself (as long as we're talking about a jammers original CD and not a tribute). There are a lot of people who don't want to read 10 jams a day with ytse Cd info. Keeping it on the jam would only encourage uninterested people to keep it from happening. This needs a seperate mailing list or a message board on the web.

This time things will be different... :-) It seems that the tribute won't be a tribute anyway... :-) It will be a "public" CD (or, at least, this is what I understood), with efforts from many people. And I really have faith in the collective work because it brought us one of the most revolutionary environments of our era: the Internet.

Think about it: we can do anything we want if we have enough discipline.

I'm sorry for my ignorance, Jeff. I don't understand your point here.

There were many times when I received many things in which I was not interested to read anymore from the list (see, how many times will we be reading the "funny" -- which aren't funny anymore -- posts of someone trying to "sell their Awake for the absolutely cheap price of $100,000.00"; it was funny for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd times they appeared here, but now they're sickening).

*BUT* (and here comes a big BUT) you're in a public, democratic forum where everybody has their right to voice their opinions, even if you don't want to read them.

I understand that as I don't want to read these "funny" posts anymore, you may be sick of the 10 'jams a day about the "tribute" CD. Everyone here doesn't like something at least from the 'jam (some may not be interested in hearing what Iron Maiden is doing nowadays, some may not give a shit about Moonspell's new album, some may not be interested in reading reviews of Dream Theater shows because they want to be surprised when it is their time to see the show etc).

Again, given those multiple interests in such a heterogeneous list (which, in my opinion, is the thing which makes this list one of the most interesting ones which I have ever subscribed), we have to respect the other's right to post.

I usually enjoy a lot the posts of people such as Mr. Ptacek, Mr. Bahr, Mr. Merlo, Mr. Abel (and others, whose names I'm sure I don't remember now), even if I don't agree with their viewpoints.

Summarizing: even if you don't enjoy those posts, please read them. We may appreciate any comments on the CD. Or if you really don't care about the posts, press the infamous skip key (PgDown or Space or ..., depending on which platform you're reading this :-) ).

    > P.S.: I don't know anything about laws, so, please, excuse my ignorance > here, but can the GNU Policy be applied (with some modifications, perhaps) > to music??

Not really. The reason the GNU Public License was drafted was to protect the rights of software users from greedy middlemen. It breaks down like this. I write a program and distribute it for free, granting everyone the rights to distribute or modify it. Dr. Mosh changes the software -- even in the slightest way -- and rereleases it as proprietary software. After all, he changed it. Now you can't get my software with Mosh's modifications for free, even though that's what I intended.

However, if I had released my software under the GNU Public License, Mosh would be obligated by law to continue to distribute my software for free, whether he modifies it or not.

Music doesn't really apply here, since we don't copyright music for the purpose of allowing others to change it. We copyright it so that if others want to use it -- even a part of it -- they have to acknowledge that it's ours (usually monetarily). Good thought, though.

Put me down as another person who thinks than Trevor CHANGED Yes, but did not RUIN Yes. But then I'm such an idiot that I absolutely love Drama, ABWH, and Union so what do I know about Yes?

Trevor is an incredible musician and a great composer.

I am aware of several other solo albums that he has done:

Trevor Rabin (AKA Beginnings) 1978 Chrysalis CHR 1196 Face to Face 1980 Chrysalis CHR 1221 Wolf 1981 ZCHR 1293

These have all been re-issued by One-Way Records and should be available cheaply from just about any of the mail order companies in Goldmine. I've never heard any of them.

He was also the leader of a band called Rabbitt: Boys will be Boys 1976 A Croak and a Grunt in the Night 1977 Rock Rabbitt 1978

I'm sure these will be re-issued for Yes/Trevor suckers everywhere who want to add to their 400-CD YES-related collection just for completeness :-P
