    - An ATCO promo picture of the band - from I&W days. Has Kevin, John,
James, John, and Mike. Mike is wearing a Carpe Diem shirt in a font
that looks real similar to the old Dream Theater font.

    - An ACOS promo press pack with photo and press release. Photo has band
members standing in rain puddles in city street intersection with big
warehouse-looking building and bright streetlights in the background.
Band members are doing the standard cool bad-ass poses. Photo credit
Joseph Cultice. Press release is typical record company "this is the
best band ever" type-nonsense. It is printed on heavy bonded paper
      with Elektra letterhead.

Both items came sealed in plastic with cardboard backing. The bootleg
vendor had them both in some yellow plastic bag, so they've never even
collected dust. I've never opened them, so they are in mint condition.

Available free to first person to send me an adequately groveling email
explaining in 3000 words or less why you'd want this stuff. Limited to
US mailing addresses only. (Sorry) The interested party must be
willing to pay for shipping. Mike Portnoy is only eligible if the band
    plays my backyard. :-)

A couple of years ago at a record show, I stumbled across someone
selling The Dance of Eternity bootleg which I had been seeking for
a long time. He wanted $50 which is probably more than the market
rate at the time, but he threw in these two memorabilia items,
ostensibly as some sort of bonus. I think he just couldn't sell
them individually. I think I've looked at them two times (once the
day I bought the CD and again today when I found the stuff behind
my CD cabinet.) I am not a memorabilia type person, so this stuff
does nothing for me. Really, I regret the whole purchase. I hardly
ever listen to the CD anymore.

Anyway, I thought that there would probably be at least one crazed
fan who would enjoy this memorabilia stuff a lot more than me. Chucking
it in the trash seemed like such a waste. Still, if no one is
interested, that's where it will go.

Again, respond to me in e-mail. Not to the jam.

so while you boys and girls yap about combo amps, there's another i'd like to
add to the mix of lovable combos. anyone else here own a fender deluxe 85?
don't it have the sweetest distortion you've ever heard? i've seriously toyed
with the idea of having it drive my marshall.

and i've arrived upon a puzzling question, ladies and not-so-gentle-men. why
is it that when i look at pictures of kevin moore, i think of david boreanaz

    Jammers,

Not so long ago someone enquired about some orchestral recommendations
to which they received many a post in reply with more recommendations
than you could poke a stick at :) - anyway, since I am also somewhat of
a novice to this rather large and intimidating genre I now ask what
brands/labels, among the many out there, are the one(s) to go for when
    buying?

Naxos seem great because they're so cheap, but I'm unsure about the
performance and sound quality. Then there's EMI redline, cheap too, but
same concern. Then there's Sony Classical, more expensive but better
    quality? It's rather intimidating.

I don't if anyone here on the jam can help me with this query, but any
    feedback would be appreciated. :)

    Cheerin'

    Luke.

PS. Sorry about the major way-off-topic NDTC.

IMHO, it's NOT what brands or labels, it's the music.

What artists? What concertos? What music hits that emotional center?
Go for that! It's not the sound quality (although it's nice to have),
    it's the listening experience.

Someone might have posted this before me, but since I haven't seen it
yet, I might as well pass on the sad word to the Jam.

Neil Peart's wife, Jacqueline Taylor Peart, just died of terminal
cancer. This barely a year after his daughter Selena Taylor died. (The
story should be in today's Toronto Sun). Neil himself has gone into a
deep depression, the exact words were something like "mental breakdown".
This event was both shocking and saddening to hear about, and
immediately my sympathies and condolences go out to Neil during this
    difficult time.

So the official word from Anthem is that the new live album will still
come out on October 6th, but that until further notice or a change in
Neil's condition, neither of which they're going to try to hurry along
in any way, Rush is no more. They've already confirmed that Rush will do
absolutely nothing for the next two years and that they will take the
next step from there, if any.

I assure you all this is not a joke. One of the cornerstones of my life
up until now has just crumbled... and I imagine many of you may feel the
    same way.

"And if the music stops; there's only the sound of the rain...
All the hope and glory, all the sacrifice in vain.
But if the love remains, though everything is lost
We will pay the price, though we will not count the cost."

Hi, gang. Now that I'm away for the weekend, I have some time to read mail. :) Syrinx and I traveled from Philadelphia last night to see these three bands in Fort Washington, PA. In an American Legion hall. It was great for us, to see three bands for 15 bucks, in an *extremely* intimate setting, but you can't help but wonder if this is what Anekdoten thought playing the States was like.

OK, so first up was Dark Aether project. Three guys - stick, drums, and guitar. This had all the makings of a great band for me, until they started playing. They're all quite talented, but the music simply didn't move me. Think Discipline-era KC (Oh, sure, he has two albums and now he's a Crimson expert! :), but with far less going on. Most of their songs had only one section. (So, is it one long verse, or one long chorus?) I kept waiting for the drummer to break into a fill, and the band to kick it up a notch and do something else. It rarely happened, however. One good thing about their set was the guest vocalist. His name escapes me, but he sings for a Baltimore-area prog band called Emerald Tiers. He's got a really sweet voice, and at times made you forget how monotonous the music was.

Next up, Almost Still Echolyn. Brief history lesson for those that don't know: Once upon a time, there was a spectacular prog band called Echolyn. They opened for DT in the summer of '95 (that's how I discovered them). Jazzy, fusiony, proggy, and just downright dangerous. Heavy and melodic, often at the same time. So, the keyboard player, Chris Buzby, quit the band and started yet another great proggy fusiony dangerous band, Finneus Gauge. Echolyn's bass player, Tom Hyatt, also quit, so that left the three guys standing before us last night, under the moniker Always Almost. Here's the mental image I had while they attempted to play old Echolyn tunes: imagine trying to peel an apple, throw the fruit away, and make the peel reatin its old shape. You just can't do it, and you shouldn't try. It was pathetic, trying to watch these guys reclaim some past glory, like a 35 year old man trying to show his son he can still play football like he did when he was 17. And the originals -- er, the originals that Buzby didn't write -- were typical standard blues-rock. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but Always Almost is a prog band in history only. They shouldn't have been on the bill last night. (Hey, where's Big Wreck when you need them?)

So, finally we come to the last band of the evening. Before we left for the show, Syrinx played me approximately two minutes of their second album, "Nucleus," and I couldn't wait to get to the show. I don't even know how to describe these guys. Imagine Black Sabbath and Primus, both on crack, having a street fight, while someone plays Mellotron. (I'll get to her later. Mmmmm.) I once heard Led Zeppelin described as "loose but tight," and that description fits Anekdoten equally well. They have a lot of fun on stage (when their equipment works), and seem to be sort of jamming and horsing around, until they immediately shift tempo and rhythm -- without so much as a wink or a nod, mind you -- seamlessly into another staggeringly complex, yet fun to listen to, section of music.

Four players in this band -- bass/vocals, drums, guitar/mellotron/vocals, and cello/mellotron. Damn, can they play. It was quite evident that most of the crowd was there to see them, and with good reason. This was one of two shows they're playing in the US any tim ein the forseeable future. I consider myself lucky to have gotten their autographs on my new copy of "Nucleus." Especially because that afforded me the opportunity to talk to the cellist.

Anna is a goddess. There's no two ways about it. Now, I would find myself hopelessly attracted to any female that owns, and can tune and play, a Mellotron. That's just cool as shit. Where the hell do I meet a woman that plays Mellotron? (Sweden, I guess.) She also looks really good playing cello. I don't know what it is, but it's a lot of fun to watch. OK, OK, so already I'm intrigued. But on top of all that, she's freaking gorgeous! I mean, the deepest blue eyes, jet black hair, and this air of innocense and wisdom all at the same time. (I almost lost my train of thought just now, listening to Anekdoten's first album.) I think I have to move to Sweden. :)

So, to pay $15 to see Anekdoten, Dark Aether Project, and three comedians was a great plan. It turned out to be a great night, especially to see a band as amazing as Anekdoten, get their autographs, and share it all with an audience of about 50 people. Go buy something from Anekdoten. You won't be disappointed. -d
