I just got back from the Cornersotne Fest today. I must say that Saviour Machine was flat amazing. Beautiful and intense. Thankfully not plagued by the sound problems they had during last year's daytime performance. Galactic Cowboys also put on a killer set. Played some new tunes that are on an upcoming album (due in September, I believe). Great energetic set. I talked a bit with Ben (vocals for thsoe who don't know) and he noticed my FII shirt and said "Hey, it's the buds" and said some stuff about Platypus. I'll try to get more details about the sets later, but both were damn good. Also, for anyone who might be interested, Saviour Machine will be playing Chicago on, get this, Halloween Night this year. I'll have to find the flier for details, but believe me, I will be there.

What's a good starter album for Van Der Graaf Generator?

Are Living Colour's non-'Vivid' albums worth getting? I would assume so, but...

And now a recommendation for you folk. Go out and rent a movie called "The City of Lost Children". Friggin' awesome.

Ok, even thou im pretty much theory impaired, i think its when you notice they play notes lower than the E in 6 string guitars, or in some cases D when they drop d-tune it , although ive never heard of jp using drop D or other detuning methods. Other than that.. he can be doing the type of chord hes doing when doing puppies on acid on the LiT video. ( he shows the "trick" on his instructional video )

it's tough with DT since Myung doubles the low stuff on the 6 string bass. i think JP used the 7 on LITS in the studio to fatten up the low end, but with Myung playing the low D live, he just plays it on a regular 6.

another song like this would be 6:00 - there are heavy low notes doubled by 6 string bass on the recording, E, D, and low B, that i bet he overdubed with the 7 even though the petrucci-edited tab book and live performance is on a 6.

I'd suggest "Animals" as your next choice. It's probably the closest you'll find to those albums, though it has it's own style. It's one of my favorite PF albums. You might also want to try "The Final Cut" which has more Roger Waters' influence. "Momentary Lapse of Reason" is not bad, but without Roger Waters. I also like Meddle, which is the album before DSOTM. It shows more of the psychedelic influences of earlier Floyd. I don't like the albums before Meddle very well.

If you end up really liking "The Final Cut" and Roger Waters' influence, try his solo album "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking". It's a concept album about a man's dream and is rather bizarre. It's a bit hard to get into but I've come to love it.

Well since Powermad is basically Friday 6pm-1am, Saturday 2pm-1am and Sunday whatever hours, Powermad is the gathering. It is in this old veterans-water buffalo type hall. The bands play on the stage and the cd venders are on the sides and food (although nasty) and drink served in the back of the hall.

    Hi all

    more reviews, recommendations and comments.

OPETH - My Arms, Your Hearse

Weird title, weird but excellent music. I'd listened to Opeth's first albums "Orchid" and "Morningrise" and found them interesting but not quite good enough to buy. Perhaps I'll have to go back and listen to them again in view of this new album. This is black/death/symphonic/progressive metal and is a real surprise. The album starts with a short piano prologue, and ends with a very floydesque epilogue. Sandwiched between these two tracks are 7 very original and very individual songs. There are dramatic changes between quiet acoustic passages and hard, fast riffs, there is some great drumming and a range of vocals that includes both clean styles and a bass cookie monster. This album needs listening to closely - it reveals more and more layers and subtleties each time you play it. I'm sure it will be spending an unfair amount of time in my stereo. 9/10

    MONSTER MAGNET - Powertrip

This is Monster Magnet's 4th album and the first one after Dave Wyndorf quit drugs. Do you notice it? I think so - I feel this album isn't quite so spaced out as the older stuff, but that makes it possibly a bit more accessible. The typical huge stoner riffs are still there, the distortion is still there, Wyndorf's threatening voice is still there - all in all, an album that I would rate up there with Fu Manchu's "The Action Is Go" if it wasn't for the last track 'Your Lies Become You'. This sort of band simply shouldn't play boring rock ballads that you would normally associate with Bon Jovi. Loose 2 points. 8/10

    SENTENCED/ALASTIS

I received a split sampler from Century Media with 2 songs from each of the forthcoming albums by Sentenced and Alastis (both of which will be released on the 20th of July). The Sentenced tracks sound just like they came from the 'Down' sessions, although just a little more melodic. The lyrics remain as dark and negative as ever. Alastis now have a new bass player, which has led to the sound opening up and becoming rounder. The melodic black metal they play is well planned and thought out. They still sound a bit like Samael without copying them, but must now be viewed as a serious challenge as one of the best black metal acts. No ratings until I get the full length albums in my grubby little hands. Sentenced - Frozen. Alastis - Revenge.

More on Bill Hicks - get stuff by this guy. I just got his album "Arizona Bay" at the weekend. Very dark and bitter, but very intelligent and funny. Listen to this, and you will hear Tool's "Aenima" differently.

Parting shot: anybody who watches Jay Leno gets exactly what they deserve.

Ok, thanks for all the reply my LitS question got. I have bought the book by now, but I like the E|--------------------------------------------------- B|----3---3----------------------------------------- G|----2---2-------0----5--------------------------- D|----0---0-----------------5----0----------------- A|----0---0---------------------------5-----0------ E|--------------------------------------------------- fingering best. Nevertheless I have to make some comments, not complaints, regarding how the jam is used to work and I hope that somebody (one would be enough) would answer (on the jam or privately). When I first joined at about January I burned my fingers and got flamed because I answered war mails I shouldn't have without knowing everything. Apparently it was all ironic and I was the kiddo. That used to be the times of Stone Cold Schnipp (I guess I'll start to use not only my initial as signature - maybe that is why nobody answers.). But - I do have an opinion, questions and maybe even answers although I'm usually too late for answers: in Germany we cannot use the line for free so I only get digests and in most cases somebody else answers the questions. I was just wondering why I get no answer most times I have a question. I got one this time, but why did nobody post before that the Tab-book is available. I guess at least 1/6 th of the jammers play a little guitar. IT IS also available in Germany but I guess that's relatively "new" news. Doesn't matter. I know now that the ppv Japan-Video is the WOWOW thing, but nobody has answered whether there is a transcription of the Platinum record ceremony or where to get it( it is definitely not in the FAQ). Maybe a Japanese jammer can provide that. Or, why is in the mirror image on Tour-shirt back the year not reversed??? Any ideas? Is it not in America? I hope you do not misunderstand me: I am just eager to get information about my favourite band. If you all know this, damn I'm sorry, but I thought that is what a fan forum is for. Ok, one last question repeated, than I'm open for your flames. Regarding the drums of Hollow Years (I am no drummer) I have a question. They sound real acoustic, with room. But the click in the beginning. I dunno, to me it sounds like an overdub click, also because MP starts DURING the click-doing(sorry, I'm still trying to learn this language) with the snare. Any comments.?? I have other questions, but I'll write another mail. take care that's the bottom line, because... schnipp
