    Joe,
Well, I'm one of those people like Scarred and OAN, though I offer a
solution to your trading woes. I have a Master list of EVERY DT show
known to man that I'm working on (see the "Tourdate Archive" URL below),
though it's not quite complete. It will have Setlist info, supporting
acts, reviews from people who attended, and whether or not an audio/video
tape of the show exists. What I REALLY wanted to do was include E-Mail
addys of the people who actually OWN these audio/video tapes, so that if
you're looking for a particular show, you can just E-Mail that guy and
ask for the trade. I've met with some resistance, mainly because either
the people are afraid of having their names in plain view (You might have
read that a Springsteen TRADER was recently taken to court because he
owned a page dedicated to Springsteen trading), or they don't want to be
bothered by "newbies". If I could get some volunteers, I'd DEFINATELY
add that option back into the archive, and let everyone who wants to be a
part of it get in. Take a look at the archive (only through 1993 is
really done, I'm still working on it) and see if you want to be part of
it. I want to make it a "One-Stop" place, where people can see reviews
of shows, setlists and pick up a few new tapes. Maybe I'm just expecting
    too much....

    <<Jam,

Can anyone explain the difference between Overdrive and Distortion? Is a Distortion pedal worth getting and if so, what is a good pedal?

    Thanks

    Mark>>

Well, there are basically 3 kinds of "gain" sounds you can get, listed from least gain to most are:

    overdrive, distortion, fuzz

Overdrive can only be TRULY reproduced by cranking a tube amp, which is why many new Overdrive pedals will have a tube in them. This sound is mostly used by blues players. Distortion, on the other hand, is more grittier, and is used everywhere from rock to metal, to whatever. Fuzz is an even more distorted distortion sound, and makes the distortion sound (you guessed it) fuzzy. Henrix used Fuzz a lot, and so does David Gilmour. If you want a bluesier and not so distorted sound, I say get the Tube King by Ibanez. It has an actual tube inside, to get a "true" overdriven sound, plus mid, treb, and bass EQ controls. For a more rock or metal sound, get a BOSS Metal Zone. They're inexpensive, and gets you one hell of a crunch/lead sound. For the Hendrix Fuzz tone, get either a Jim Dunlop Fuzz Face, or a Sovtek (or Electro Harmonix if you can find em) Big Muff. By the way, even though Fuzz is more distorted than distortion, due to the "fuzziness" of its sound, I find that it does not work well for a crunch sound, nor does Overdrive, since its not distorted enough to get a crunch sound. I use a Fender Twin Reverb amp and (with settings I got from Petrucci's lead amp in the DT Help thingy for windows, its on Under a Cyber Moon) using the metal zone, I can get a pretty good lead/crunch sound without changing the settings. Also, in case you dont know, reverb will take away from the "crunch" and make it sound muddier, so if you get reverb from a soruce outside your amp (pedal, multi, rack unit) I would suggest not using reverb for the crunch sound. If youhave a multi FX unit, you can program a crunch patch without reverb on it, and a lead patch with reverb.

    Hope that helps.

    Neil Peart

Okay first off, This stuff with Neil Peart really sucks. First he lost his daughter last year, and now this. Did I miss anything? I hope nothing else befalls this poor guy. His music and his lyrics have always seemed like they came from the heart, and there are not many musicians, or people for that matter, that do that anymore. It's a rare commodity and that makes his work all that more special to me. To hear about him going through this....well....my prayers are with him.

    MEGADETH

Moving on now, we get to talk about my favorite band. I thought that Nick Menza fit Megadeth like a glove. His time is great, his fills are good, he's a good showman, and he can do all the double bass work you could ever ask of a drummer in a thrash band. It kinda hit me like a ton of bricks last month when I heard he was going to have knee surgery, and now to hear that he can't play anymore really got me down....almost as down as when I heard about what happened to Neil Peart's wife. To be a talented musician and to have the ability to make your music stripped from you has got to be one hell of a horror, and as with Neil, my prayers are with Nick Menza and his family...and with Megadeth. I hope Megadeth chugs on through this, finds a permanent drummer that suits them, and uses this as motivation. They'll never really find a "replacement" for Nick, but I hope they find someone good.

    YIIIIIING WEEEEEEEEEEEE!

"Who? Yngwie fucking Malmsteem, that's who!" That shirt is so dumb! Anyway, I've never bought any Yngwie albums before, so I decided to run out and get his new one a few weeks ago, and after listening to it alot, I REALLY dig it. About the only thing I don't like is the guitar sound. His playing, however, and the music are just incredible. Very fluid. I've just never been a fan of using a single coil pickup with a heavy metal rhythm sound. Single coils have their uses, and to me, that's not one of them. Especially through a Marshall (bleh!), but that's a whole other thread :) Yngwie's music sounds like a watered down version of Symphony X :) However, it's still very good, and I recommend this album to anyone. Heavier than Satch, Vai, and Johnson's music......well.....except for that ballbuster "Alien Love Secrets". Man, that was a nice heavy album :)

    Well, enough ramblings for now....laterz!!

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff, ~Vince

Hey, gang. Here's the announcement, for those of you that haven't heard. After 22 straight years, I have decided that being a student is no longer for me. So, I'm moving back to Long Island to get a real job (and make some real money :), and learn what it's like to enjoy a weekend. Anyway, you can still e-mail me at d-man@dreamt.org, although my "real" address is changing, from cmerlo@cs.wm.edu to cmerlo@mindstorm.com. Of course, that means that my web site has to move, and it already has -- URL is in the .sig, as always.

Chroma Key - go get it.

Rush - It's not completely selfish to hope that they get back together. You never know, it might just be the one thing Neil needs to get over the terrible tragedies in his life. Twenty-four years later, it's the one thing he still has. And don't forget to send the R&R Hall of Fame some hate mail if the boys aren't inducted next year.

Banks - You're better off keeping your money under your mattress. I almost got burned by my bank in Vermont, and now I have been burned twice by my bank here in Virginia. (Thank Ged I'm going home.) *ALWAYS* read your bank statements. Banks *do* make mistakes. Computers *are* fallible, because they're programmed by people (most of the time dumbshits).

OK, that's it for now. -d

The dude's under some serious stress. I hope he gets better soon. The world is missing out on one hell of a drummer and lyricist. Not to mention one hell of a great guy.>>

Not to mention the fact that some rapper dj just BUTCHERED Tom Sawyer for the Small Soldiers movie. I mean, first the guy's daughter and wife die, then some fat sweaty rapper decides to slaughter one of Rush's best songs? I sure hope those rappers wind up killing each other off. Daddy says every time a rapper dies an angel gets its wings. I wanna see a lot of angels flying around.....

BTW, anyone who has any bit of respect for Neil or Rush in general, please DONT see Small Soldiers. Tell your friends. I know its a small protest, but its something. If you respect Mr Peart and Rush, dont see this movie.

Ive been meaning to bring this up for a while, and i wanna know what the rest of you think. We all know DT is not exactly the most popular band around. And I also know a lot of you are trying to get them onto the charts. I know they are already popular in Japan (thems gots some VERY smart people living in that country) but think about it if they became popular in the states. Think about it right now...DT would be on MTV and sell out stadiums. Do we really want this? They are popular in Japan, but why would it make a difference if they became popular here? One reason: the American media. You know the American media would tear DT apart if they became popular. Over saturating them until they dried up like any other "popular" band in america. For some reason, most other countries DONT have a media that does this! You think a country like Sweden would over expose bands like America does? I do wish the best for DT, and it would be cool to see them become more well known, but not in this country. Opinions are open....

Exactly. I was a new trader a little over 2 years ago when I first got web and email access. The very first thing I did was join the Ytsejam, and I think my first post mentioned that I was searching for a live version of ACoS with James on vocals. Less than 24 hours later a kind person named Mape agreed to help me out, and I'm still grateful to him for getting me started. Thanks, Mape :) BTW, I'm sorry I wrote on the J-card of the tapes I sent you, but I didn't know any better.

I've been trading ever since then. A few Bahr discs and many trades later I've got a decent collection of DT-related CD-Rs, tapes, and videos. I consider myself to be a mid-level trader now. I have never, ever turned anyone down just because they had nothing but blanks to trade. I don't plan on changing that in the near future, either.

If you're new to trading and you don't know where to begin, feel free to check out my boot list. If you see something that you think would help get you going as a trader, email me and we'll set up a deal. I know I'm not the only one who is glad to do this; I'm just using myself as an example. http://www.auburn.net/~swifty/bootlegs.html

Speaking of Adam Pye, whom I quoted at the top of this message, I've traded with him before. I emailed him about a week before DT played Atlanta last December, and we swapped tapes after the show. Not only did I meet a great fellow 'jammer, and not only did I save postage, I got a kickass Rush tape that still gets more than its share of time in my tape player.
