Why is it that a cool concert: Dream Theater / ELP / Deep Purple,
isn't coming to the South East. I just blew my bucks to get a ticket to MA
to catch it in Mansfieled, MA. Mike Portnoy is putting on a drum Clinic in
Hallendale, FL; but, no Dream Theater concert here. Its just not
fair.......

Okay, I'll comment. I have several albums of theirs on vinyl as well as CD, including the solo effort of Ken Hensley, Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf. I'm looking for Abominog and Head first on CD. Looking forward to Explorer's Club release, as well as another review of Attention Deficit to see if that's worth getting.
A double CD of DT... Hmmm. This implies that FII sold as well as the label expected. Why else would they give the green light now as opposed to a year ago? It would seem this album acheived what it was designed for-marketing the band. IMO, it's about friggin' time! Even if some people's nipples are opposite of this...

Okay, we know that "the whole band" alternated writing lyrics for the song (i.e., Mike wrote a verse, Kevin wrote a verse, etc.)... now, do we know who wrote what? I think now that we've heard more Mike lyrics, and we've already heard plenty of John/John/Kevin lyrics, we could in theory be able to pin certain lyrical moments to each member (each has such a distinctive style lyrically). Anybody care to speculate? ^_^
Here's my guesses: 1st verse (from Just let me catch my breath to I think it's time for a change) -- Mike
2nd verse (from There is something that I feel to I won't waste another breath) -- Kevin
Chorus (I think we all know this one!) -- Kevin

that's because the Floyd know how to write songs using cool time changes so well that you don't even realize they're doing it. Sting is great at this too... check out his "Ten Sumoner's Tales" CD for examples of this.
that's something the bothers me about alot of prog bands... they write screwy time changes just for the sake of writing them. where as the "good" (IMO) bands do it so smoothly you don't even notice it.

I think it's more that James performs how James CAN perform on the road. Notice how, normally, his diction only suffers when he's hitting relatively high notes. He "opens up" his larynx (I bleeve) to get more air flow and closed vowels (like the long "i" and "e"s) suffer as a result. He'd crack far more than he does now if he didn't allow himself to open up. The fatigue factor is just too great. James is a natural tenor tho'. People like Geoff Tate (and myself, in fact), on the other hand, are singing out of their range. Instead of opening up they "pinch" to hit high notes. That's why Tate occasionally sounds excessively shrill live. A side effect of pinching is that you can generally hit more clearly "closed" type vowels. The other side effect of pinching is that (in general) it puts more strain on your voice. Tate is a rare case that has done it this way for years and has just recently (last few years) suffered from it (and smoking). I think James has been much more consistent on the FII tour (as compared to Awake and I&W). He doesn't usually hit the screaming high notes he used to do live, but the benefit is that he doesn't blow his voice away on just one or two songs. He still has very off days occasionally, but don't we all? :) I'm curious to see how the vocals on the live album sound. Even on his best day James is not 100% perfect, so if the vocals are absolutely flawless you know it was an overdub (despite what Mike says). :) Take care all...

EXPLORERS CLUB "AGE OF IMPACT" --kicks big A. JP supershred!!
SYMPHONY X "TWILIGHT IN OLYMPUS" -needs a few more listens, but Romeo shreds on a par with Divine Wings
ARTENSION "INTO THE EYE OF THE STORM" -great keys, but I still like Vitalij Kuprij's 'solo' "HIGH DEFINITION" with Greg Howe on shred/production better
NARNIA "AWAKENING" -if you've never heard this, you might want to give it a try Definitely high on the shred list & great vox from this Swedish band. Definitely influenced by Yngwie & Blackmore. Recommendation/warning: they are a Christian-influenced band if you know anything about CS Lewis' Narnia series.

Storyhill: Echoes, the Final Show. Yah, it's not a bootleg, but it's about the only live album I can honestly admit to liking. I pretty much hate live stuff for the most part. (except videos) But then Yanni's live stuff kicks much ass, too.

I was checking their bios and Bill Stayley (guitarist) has John P. listed as one of his 4 major influences. =D (And yes, Vinnie, he uses Mesa Amplification). They have some sound clips up there, too. At $8 for a kickass CD, you can't complain! Just got the latest Metal Edge, and at first glance, we have some nice DTC in this one! First off, there's a VERY cool full page Sabian ad with MP in an intense drum pose with the caption saying stuff like "MY CYMBALS KILL!"
Ya gotta love our Mikey! :-)
Also, there's some pics in there from the HoB show with Bruce Dickinson on stage! <drool> I SOOOOOOOOOOO wish I was there.... but it's kinda difficult when you live on the East Coast. :-) Let's hope Westwood One takes care of us in the near future. They also mention something in the mag about the live album coming out in the fall.

it is run by the band (Ty Tabor, guitarist), and it is the most well informed. it was in a slump in getting up dated (from May until about a week ago), but it should be beneficial now and in the months to come. especially with so much new KX-related stuff coming out...a new KX album in sept/oct, a new Doug Pinnick (bassist) solo album in august, and the Platypus (Ty & Myung & Derek & RodMorg.) album in august.
as for my fav KX album... geez. i love them all. i really like "dogman" due to doug's vocals, and the personal side to the lyrics. other good ones are "ear candy" or "gretchen goes to nebraska." those are probably my top3 of kingsx. though, i love "faith hope love" "kings x" and "out of the silent planet" a lot too.
a good way to get a good taste of KX is through their "best of" CD that came out last fall. it's got songs from all of their releases, plus 3 new tunes, plus an awesome live version of "over my head."
