I've already seen this question posted, but haven't found a clear answer
(unless I missed it): Does anyone know how long and what is Dream Theater's
set list on this tour? I'm interested in going to see it (Hartford, CT) but
if it's going to be short I don't want to pay the any of the prices that the
    Hartford Meadows usually charges.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Well,
I have to agree with a few of the gripes some people brought up. I
was dissappointed that there was no 2 cd case, and that the covers were
slightly bent up in shipping. One thing that pissed me off is that the rear
tray card is made to fit in a "chubby" "2-cd" case, rather than a slimline.
Now I know, 20 bucks is very cheap for a 2 cd set of extremely high audio
quality, but it just seems like Mike throws everything together. You know
what I wouldn't mind seeing? Mike should have some high quality bitmaps of
the covers available for download on his site, so maybe if some of us choose,
we could save them and have them printed at kinko's or something, to have them
look slightly more professional. I'm gonna have Mike Portnoy autograph the
cover, and its embarassing how flimsy it is.

Well, anyway, I have to say, it is a great sounding boot, if not the best
    looking!

Hey, did anyone have problems getting the RealVideo thing to work on that
broadcast? My parents have a Compaq Presario with 233 MHz Pentium II and a
big HD and a 56K modem, and 32m RAM and all that fast sh*t, but I had a hell
of a time trying to get it to happen. I had the real video connection going
before the show started, but then I lost it and couldn't get it to work. Then
I couldn't get the real audio to work either and when I did, the sound sucked
and it kept going out like a distant radio station. I have realaudio player
5.0 along with some Microsoft download that supposedly gets rid of some bugs,
but it obviously didn't help. The only thing I can think of is the fact that
due to crappy phone lines in the area, I guess, I can't connect any faster
than 28.8Kbs (yes, I have AOL properly set with 56K phone numbers and it knows
I have a 56K modem and all that), which I understand is the minimum connection
speed for real audio or video to work properly. Is that all that was holding
    it back?

You fucking sucking and if you don't agree that you fucking suck, then you
fucking suck !!!!!! :o) And DICKHEAD, we weren't complaining. How do you
fucking complain about something that hasn't happened yet? No, what took
place was a discussion about a PREFERENCE for a single slot 2 CD package. And
why discuss it here - maybe because Portnoy reads the jam. That doesn't mean
we expect Portnoy to make an effort to "take care of this". Why would you
dare ask for an autograph at a concert? Can't you be happy that they are in
your town playing? The autograph is a nice little bonus - but not getting an
autograph wouldn't spoil the day. Just as not getting a single slot CD case
wouldn't spoil the album. Instead it would just be a neat little bonus. Do
you think we really would bitch and moan if it came in a bulky 2 CD case? I
wouldn't. The point was to state a preference before the CD is actually in
print. Now complaining after the fact would in fact be BITCHING.

Dumb ass. You act as though we are attacking the band. WE WEREN'T ATTACKING

inclusion of "long-time" supposed to add weight to your rant? Your rant reeks

It's always good to start with the best. :)

"Flying" is also the one I always skip.

Somewhere in my video collection I have a recording of Joe and his small
touring ensemble playing "Only the Future" on Conan O'Brien. Sweet.

If you like Night Music, I'm pretty sure you'll like Heaven and Hell, his
latest release, and first release on Sony Classical<!>. Everything before
these two is in the pop/adult contemporary vein, but the best pop you ever
heard. By his Blaze of Glory album, Joe had pushed the envelope of pop
music as far as it could go.

Joe is one of the few artists with whom I would recommend becoming
acquainted in REVERSE chronological order. This is because Joe just gets
better and better. :) I fell in love with the Man's music through his
"Live 1980/86" set. A perfect scrapbook of his career thus far. One
album, "Blaze of Glory" is recorded with no spaces between tracks. Very
    cool.

Now, I've heard the CD and I've even seen a picture of an Ondes Martenot,
but could you maybe tell me a little more about it? Private email is
    fine.

    EVERYONE:

    1) Go get JJ's "Night Music,"
    2) Love it,
    3) Go get "Heaven and Hell."

    Simple. :)

Get away from the piano! :) E# DOES exist! Say you're playing in c#
    minor and want to play a V7/ii, or you want to end on a Picardy third;
both of those chords contain the MAJOR third of a c# scale: e#.

As much as E# exists, so does B#, as well as Fb and Cb. And for that
    matter, Fx and Ebb. :)

    > -E#

okay - just so you know - E# DOES exist as a note. It is the same pitch as F
    - but not the same note. If you understand music theory, you know what I
mean. To make my point - the notes of the F# harmonic minor scale are:
    F#, G#, A, B, C#, D, E#
well, there it is - E#. If you said the notes of the F# harmonic minor scale
    are:
    F#, G#, A, B, C#, D, F
then you are wrong and should take a music theory class.

Okay, so I am being picky - but you should beat the crap out of any teacher
that tells you the following notes do not exist:
    B#, Cb, E#, Fb

If your teacher tells you these notes do not exist, run. That teacher is not
    helping you.

    <<Hey all
I introduced my son to DT when he was 6. He grew to really get into the
music, howling along to CiaW and IF at the top of his lungs! Then he
asked me to play Operation Mindcrime one day. That has now become his #1
request. I try to limit his exposure due to the rather dark subject
matter (he is 10 now, and the questions never stop!) Iron Maiden soon
followed, along with Rush and many of the other classics. On his own he
has discovered the Spice Girls and much of the other pop currently out
(Matchbox 20, Ben Folds 5, etc.) I don't own ANY of this stuff. He gets
turned on to it by other kids at school.
My point is that we can introduce our kids to any kind of music, and if it
is of an enduring quality (DT, QR, Rush, etc) it will likely become part
of their own music libraries as they get older. We've ALL got some flash
in the pan DOGS in our collections, which I feel helps to contrast against
the music that truly moves us. What we like may be subjective, but it is
useful to have a point of reference from what we DON'T like.
On music and intelligence: my son has been reading well beyond his grade
    level from the start.
    His current top request? LTE!
    Rock on, Little Man!>>

Ok, interesting thing here. My dad took me to see genesis in 93, and even
though it isnt the linup I am into now (Gabriel stuff) it had a very big impact
on me. I still remember that i knew all the words to their 20 minute song
Suppers Ready when I was in 4th grade! Most of the music at that time, my
dad turned me on to. ELP came shortly, and by that time I had picked up
guitar and he turned me on to Eric Clapton (although I no longer listen to him).
I was NEVER influenced by any other kid my age to listen to c-rap and
alturnative. Yes came along a few years later (when I had heard all the stuff
Genesis and ELP had to offer ;-). Heres where it gets weird. A friend of mine
who worked in a comic store suggested Pink Floyd to me. You'd think my
dad would have liked them....no, he thinks they suck. Ok, Gilmour is my new
guitar god. The same guy suggests Rush. my dad hates them too. After
listening to ELP for a bit, I picked up Greg Lakes' King Crimson album and
got into them too. My dad isnt very fond of them either. OK, a little less than
a year ago I got frustrated that I could not find any new prog bands. All the bands
that I liked at this point were 40+. My friend on AOL, Perk1994, suggests
Dream Theater to me. I go and buy FII. Cool. a new prog band! Maybe pops
will be interested. WRONG! He went with me to see them and he found
Portnoy to be dull (of all things) and the rest of them to be pompus and "all
flash." Now my dad is buying Hole and Garbage CDs. As well as condeming
the prog that he once loved. Middle age crisis to act young? Eh. All I'm
saying is that it turned out backwards between us. I got into all the prog, HE
got into all the mainstream. BTW, he hates LTE too.

According to the email I got from KNAC, the show was postponed due to
Maiden's singer being ill. The thing that really sux is that according
to the Dio web site, his last performance with the tour is going to be
Saturday night in San Diego. I have no idea if he'll be performing at
the 8/2 show or not. It certainly is annoying as hell to get to a venue
only to find a sign saying the show is postponed. I'm just glad I only
    live 5 minutes away! :-)

Just wanted to clear up the arguments about who wrote what in TTT:

    1st Verse: Portnoy
    2nd Verse: Myung

Chorus: Portnoy ("It's time to take the time")
Moore ("You can feel the waves coming on")

    3rd Verse: Petrucci

Bridge: Moore ("I can see clearly now, I'm blind")

    Outro: Portnoy
                Moore

A newer version of the FAQ has been online for about a week now. I would
have announced it on here already, but I'm still restructuring and adding
new stuff in. I've gotten some good questions in email, so keep them
    coming.

I have not understood this one. First, it is hard to imagine that the CD
cases are that different in size. Second, if the case is a different size
then the person has a white border around the image (if the case is larger)
or has to crop the image (if the case is smaller). I would have loved for
mine to have been cut and insert into 1 of the 2 cases (this is a point of
a little gripe. I just purchased a package of 10 slimline 2CD cases for $7
at Computer City. That's only $.70 a case. I'll bet you can beat that
price in quantity.) As it is, mine arrived wrinkled all to shit and folded
across the image instead of the white part of the paper. I have since
scanned the image and reprinted it. It looks better than the original.

I guess I sound like I am coming down on Mike but I really do not mean to.
I know there were problems that caused the late CDs and it doesn't bother
me. I know for a fact that Mike WILL NOT rip me off. I do not like to
wait for my CDs but I will. Its not that big a deal. I will continue to
purchase all of his Dream Theater releases because the audio quality is
usually excellent. However, the packaging of late has really gone to shit.

My $0.02 worth that no one asked for. :)

***OK yall, I'm sure you've all heard about the experiments that were done
    that
proved that children who grew up under the influence of classical music were
slightly more intellectually capable than children raised on "normal" music.
So I was thinking...why could this be? And I came to the conclusion that it
must have to do with the complexity of the music itself. Which leads me to
my thesis. Prog is undoubtedly quite complex, so...I think we should
organize a little experiment... Anyone who plans on having a kid or is in
the process of raising one, let em listen ONLY to prog. And then, have
another kid, and play them Green Day. Then in ten years, compare the two
kids and then post your findings.****

I completely disagree. I'm a student at Boston University, and I can tell you
that there are thousands of Green Day fans and maybe 10 DT fans. All you would
be doing by raising a kid up entirely on prog is creating a prog snob. You
know one of those people who can't stand if a song has than 12 time changes
and any note is slower than a 16th note. I have a friend who studies jazz at
college and listens to technical jazz music, but he also likes pop music like
Green Day and No Doubt. He can't stand prog. Some people want to listen to
challening music, others just want to feel happy when listening to music. No
type of music is better than another. They all have different ideas and
messages. I love DT's do-anything idea of songwriting and virtuosity,
Pantera's aggressiveness and groove, Steve Vai's experimentation, Jimi
Hendrix's innovation, Pink Floyd's relaxed psychadelic atmosphere, Stevie Ray
Vaughn's expression, The Beatles sense of melody and harmony, and John
    Coltrane's genius.

I personally think someone who is exposed to many different types of music
would be more "intellectual." Although I don't consider myself to be too
    intellectual...

Here's a cool quote from Helmet's Page Hamilton, "A punk snob might as well be
a classical snob or a jazz pinhead."

Well I have to admit I really don't care too much for power metal. A few
months ago I was really into Angra, but now when I listen to Holy Land, I'm
not as impressed. Even though the music is technically good, I become bored
with it. So far I've listened to some Angra, Symphony X and Stratovarious.
Angra was the only one I initially liked, and they are getting less rotation
    in my CD player.

    Re: Symphony X's lyrics-
The one problem with their lyrics is that it seems that every song uses the
same key words like "sins, shadows, mirror, light." The lyrics get old as does
the music, for me. I feel like I'm listening to the same song I don't like for
    70 minutes.

    Re: Michael Romeo-
His ability is great, but I feel he is one of the worst guitarists in my CD
collection. And I do own some classic rock, alternative and pop discs. I think
that his solos lack direction. They sound like a string of licks rather than a
coherent solo. None of his solos are memorable for me. David Gilmour is the
master of phrasing. Then regarding his accentuation, listen to a Petrucci
speed run and a Romeo speed run. Petrucci's notes stand out more, while Romeo
    seem more slurred.

    Re: Russell Allen-
I think he's one hell of a vocalist. His voice is great, and he can do metal
growls to some crystalline clear passages. He's my favorite member of the
    band.

    Re: the keyboardist-
I don't like him. Part of the reason is that he and Romeo seem to always trade
blindingly fast solos. None of which I care for.

Oh and why I said I was preparing for flames was not because I expected loads
of flames, just one from Mark Metzger. But I guess I'll see him in a mosh pit
in the near future. (Not at DT show for all you anti-moshers :) )

Hi, Jeff. Thank you for your responding. Besides my American friend,
Dennis Phillips, you are the second person (actually including Matt) who
seems to know X-Japan. I thank you for mentioning X-Japan. My Latvian
friend, Uldis Shen, also likes X-Japan.

In Japan, X-Japan is really huge band. They are like Metallica in Japan.
However, they broke up. I do not know exactly why they broke up...
Maybe, Toshi (lead vocalist) wanted to do more simple melodic pop rock.
He had a his solo project called Toshi with Nighthawk. Nighthawk is more
simple melodic syle. I am not sure you like or not.

X-Japan has two guitarists (Pata and Hide). Hide is the person who
commit suicide. He looked excentric, but I read the article that He
donated money for patients suffering bone disease. I was very shocked
when I heard he died. At least, he is one of most talented rock musician
in Japan. His solo singles did not sound anybody....
Pata is like more Hard rock guitarist. He used to have a few solo albums
which feature Tommy Aldrich (ex-Whitesnake) and James Christian (House
Of Lords). Kind of little bit of Kings-X.

Bassist is called heath, but I do not know him much. But Taiji Sawada
(ex-member) joined Dirty Trash Road. Actually, Yoshiki
(drummer/keyboard) is actually main composer of this band. He went to
music school. Yoshiki is very unique person, but he is like an narcist
(which reminds me of Prince, but not so bad..) Yoshiki put some
symphonic element on some songs, such as Rusty Nail and Endless Rain.
Well, if you have any comment, please let me know. I am glad to answer
    about X-Japan.

Yes, I think ytsejam is pretty interesting discussion place for prog
fans. Unfortunately, X-Japan is not so progressive (they have symphonic
element a little bit though in some songs). Nothing but melodic speed
metal. But for a few years, they made ballad songs. Thus, I got bored a
little bit. Sometimes, they covered Loudness and Kiss. Oh, have you ever
heard of Kiss my A** tribute album which featured Extreme, Garth
Brookes, and others. X-japan covered Black Diamond. Gene Simmons and
Paul Stanley mentioned that their cover song has feeling of movie
soundtrack, such as ending roll of the movie...

I was curious if X-Japan made a release in United States, it would be
successful IMO because they had contract with Atlantic Records. It is
very unusual how they got a deal...Because most talented Hard Rock
artists of Atlantic Records were already dropped off....

If you want to hear different styles, then you might find out that they
wrote lots of ballads.. Sorry, I can not exactly answer your question
precisely. I usually do not buy their albums, but I have several songs
    on tapes.

Actually, everybody says different stories (his cause of death). One
person said he was practicing tying towels around his neck for his show
(it sounds wierd, but that is his character..), then accidentally, He
could not help untieing.... The other reason was that He was no way out
after X-Japan broke up. Mind you, X-Japan does not exist anymore..

    >Well, once more, welcome to the Ytsejam. Looking forward to hearing
    >from you.

Thank you for your warm letter, I am really glad to hear from you. Lunar
Crush sounds interesting. Do they have elements of Fear Factory? I can
enjoy Fear Factory. I also love technical/melodic based music.
I am looking forward to hearing new Dream Theater live CDs. Fates
Warning is also my favorite band.

In the indie scene of Japan, Vigilante is one of brightest hope. Some
people mentioned that Vigilante sounds like Queensryche meets Lethal.
Wow, I want to hear them. Besides such bands, Japanese scene are almost
dead. We do not have many talented domestic progressive bands. Some
people mentioned that Sahara (from Korea) is very good. I know Tang
Dynasty (from China) has little bit of Progressive feeling. I think both
band's guitarists learned music in United States. Just coincidence. Oh,
Feel So Bad is my favorite new Japanese generation band. Feel So Bad has
modern sound cross between Pantera, Steve Vai, and Alice In Chains. It
    is pretty interesting band.

Ok, I enjoy your comments. Take care, Jeff!! =)
