I think that the song you're refering to is "Carol of Bells",
which Savatage recorded under the name "Christmas Eve".
BTW, if I'm correct, I think it's obvious why the band put that
bit of that song there: they started playing this version in the "Fix for
96" tour, which started on December of 1996. So, nothing more appropriate
than playing that...
BTW #2, I think that this song ("Carols of Bells") is one of the
most beautiful things that I have ever heard. It always gives me chills...
Absolutely incredible. And the Savatage rendition is very good. The first
time I heard this version was when Marcelo brought me the CD "Dead Winter
Dead". I almost had a heart attack.

Okay, I know Dream Theater has a built up quite a srtong fan base that they can now release a double live album and not suffer from a lack of sales.
But how is Fates Warning able to pull this off? Seriously, I don't see a whole lot of sales for their double live album.

Ok, we've all heard how Mr. Big, DT, and many other bands with musicians in them are popular in Japan. So out of curiosity, is there something like MTV there that plays prog metal videos? If so maybe we can all get bootleg tapes of these "gods in Japan". Or maybe they suffer with the same mindless stuff we get here. Enquiring minds want to know....

Finally got to listen to that Platypus sample. What a refreshing change.I was expecting to hear prog metal in the vein of LTE or DT.Instead I got a nice song which mixes nice grooves with odd times(actually, it´s the odd times that makes it so groovy.Well... Rod Morgenstein helps too. :-) ) and even some blues.I noticed that Platypus is Kings X´s Ty Tabors project. Is all Kings X this good?

neither do they. They're on a minor label, Metal Blade. That's why they can do this. You think Dream Theater would be allowed to release an album that's a 52 minute song? On Electra? NO WAY. The label wouldn't let them. IMO, Fates Warning does what they know is best for the music and the fans. To me, they have the most musical intergrity of anyone out there.

If you have the chance to get out to LI, you must check out Music Arcade in Westbury. They have a buttload of "imports" from just about anyone you'd want to find it from, including many of the prog-types frequently mentioned here. Wantagh Pkwy, Old Country Rd. west, go about two blocks, shopping center on the right (north) side of the street.
Unfortunately, I don't know any of the good places in NYC, and I'd appreciate reading anyone else's answers for Eric. -d

Anybody who has Stream of Consciousness......
Aside from the few sound dropouts that Mike Bahr mentioned in his e-mail (I counted something like 6 on disc 1) - I'm wondering if anybody else has a moderate "hiss" in the background? And yes, I realize that it's a boot, and not a studio release - but after listening to Static Progress, I noticed that had no hiss..... so it made me wonder.
Also, does anybody else have a REALLY OBVIOUS sound dropout at approx. 6:44 of Voices? Right when James is singing "....lost the truth to quicksand" it jumps right into where he's belting out "voooooices!" Like I said, it's painfully obvious.
Please reply, so I can know if my discs are screwed up or not.
On a positive note: aside from the above, the general quality is pretty high. Also, it's a great setlist. My favorite track (after 1 1/2 listens) would have to be the killer version of Ytse Jam. I'll post a review once I give it a few more listens.
Thanks, - Joe D.

I just wanted all to know that this has got to be a bogus rumor. In fact, whoever read this must have seen it in the Finnish equivelant of "The Star" or "Weekly World News" because "it ain't so!". I for one, saw Mike Portnoy this past Wednesday night (which helped spawn the discussion about the live album here on the jam) and he said, after being asked what DT's plans were for next year; "Well, the live album will be out in the fall, then we'll probably take a break from it all for a little while, then start recording again!" To much applause he said this. Mike has been home from Finland for a while, so I know you have nothing to fear. Chill. J

Hello DT Fans!
The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Here are some snippets from it that are of special interest to DT fans!
We have some new members that I'm extremely proud to welcome to The Artist Shop and one of them is former Dream Theater keyboardist, Kevin Moore! Kevin Moore's Chroma Key album can now be found at <http://www.artist-shop.com/newlabel/index3.htm>. Chroma Key is a solo project by Kevin Moore, former keyboardist and songwriter for New York's Dream Theater. Kevin Moore left Dream Theater in June of '94 after eight years with the band in order to pursue his own musical direction. In the fall of that year, he relocated to New Mexico where he began writing and recording new material. Four of the songs on the new record, "Dead Air for Radios" ("Even the Waves", "S.O.S.", "On the Page" and "Mouse") were written during this period, all of which incorporate excerpts from interviews Moore recorded with some of the people he crossed paths with there.
The following year, Moore moved to Los Angeles to begin working the songs out with drummer Mark Zonder, whom he had known since the early days of Dream Theater. Moore called on two additional musicians whom he had come to know through Zonder's rehearsal studio - bassist Joey Vera and guitarist Jason Anderson =96 to record 9 songs on modular digital gear both at the rehearsal studio and at Moore=92s house in the Angeles National Forest. The result is "Dead Air for Radios", an album that goes well with long stretches of interstate highway, or with headphones, or both. Kevin Moore formed Fight Evil Records in 1996 to handle Chroma Key and future project releases. Chroma Key's Dead Air for Radios, is the label's first release. Again, you'll find graphics and soundbites for this release at <http://www.artist-shop.com/newlabel/index3.htm>.
]From Magna Carta <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna>, the much anticipated Attention Deficit and Explorers Club CD's will be out around the end of the month. We now have graphics and soundbites up for both of these. Attention Deficit is another of Magna Carta's wild experiments in which they throw together some truly great instrumentalists, lock them in a studio for a week of wild improvisation and see what comes out. This formula yielded intriguing results with Black Light Syndrome and Liquid Tension Experiment. And with a lineup of Alex Skolnick/electric and acoustic guitars, Tim Alexander/drums and percussion, and Michael Manring/four, six and ten string basses, loops, Attention Deficit promises to generate just as much= excitement.
Age of Impact from Explorers Club is a classic, Progressive rock masterpiece the likes of which haven't been heard in years. With the services of a rhythm section to die for, Terry Bozzio's drums (Zappa, UK, Missing Persons, Bozzio/Levin/Stevens) and Billy Shehan's bass (Talas, David Lee Roth, Mr. Big) lay the bed for a five part journey. Guitars are represented nobly by a core contingent led by Dream Theater's John Petrucci, fresh from the kill with Liquid Tension Experiment, and Magellan's Wayne Gardner. Other soloists lending power to the cause include none other than Yes' Steve Howe and Death's James Murphy. Keyboards are mostly composer Trent Gardner's domain while Dream Theater's Derek Sherinian and Matt Guillory of Dali's Dilemma also contribute. Explorers Club's vocal army is just as impressive. Dream Theater's James LaBrie, Royal Hunt's D. C. Cooper, Dali's Dilemma's Matt Bradley and Cairo's Bret Douglas deliver Garner's evolving, revolving tale, often underscoring the tough, progressive metal aggression of tracks that are arranged like the classics - Yes' Close to the Edge and Relayer, Genesis' The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tale springing to= mind.
Progression Magazine issue No. 27 is now available at <http://www.artist-shop.com/progress.htm>. This is by far the biggest and best issue yet, with 148 pages, full-color cover, glossy inside page stock and square binding. Contents include the following:

as far as that being charlie d, it's old news. someone came across his e-mail address a while ago and posted some of his messages, and we pretty much decided that it was him (at least i did). the majesty video, on the other hand, is news to me and sounds very cool. i can see why someone would do that. i have plenty of footage of me with my old band, and a lot of it is funny as hell. i'd release it if i thought people would enjoy watching it. sure. in fact, i've already made a few small releases for friends and the like. Got some new CD's ........
"Steinway to Heaven" - For anybody unfamiliar with this Magna Carta release, it has Rick Wakeman, Jordan Rudess, Keith Emerson, Chris Ingles, Mark Robertson (Cairo) and a whole slew of great keyboardists playing classical songs, like "Moonlight Sonata". In a word: "It kicks ass!" Wait a minute, that was three words. Oh well. Go pick this disc up!
Gamma Ray - "Somewhere Out In Space" - I haven't listened to this in it's entirety yet, but so far - so good. Anybody who's into the Stratovarius/ Helloween type thing should like it (and correct me if I'm wrong, but Kai Hansen (vocs./guitar) used to be in Helloween). One cool thing is that they have little notes from the band describing each song, what a cool idea! Probably the one thing I DON'T like about this kinda stuff is those big, rapid-fire double bass runs they do (am I using the correct terminology?), which (to me) usually sound pretty shitty. Is it just because I don't have some mega-awesome sound system?
Cairo (self titled) - One again, I haven't heard the whole thing yet (I have yet to tackle the big 22 minute "Ruins at Avalon's Gate"). So far I really like my first exposure to Cairo. Good vocals and great keys abound on this disc!
Okay, what's up with this,? It just struck me that of these three discs I ordered from CDNOW, two out of three have Egyptian themed artwork (plus obviously, the name Cairo). Plus I just listened to Sym. X's "Pharaoh". What's goin' on here?
Later, - Joe D.
