hmm, now that I think about it, the slimline case I tried was from a Fish
Import CD, could be the case. But the rear tray card does fit *perfectly* in
a double chubby. And for the bmp's being posted, thats true, they would be
awfully large. It was worth a shot. But either way, great CD, Mike, you'll

    > 3. Technical skills- you listen to DT for the first time and you say

I agree with all these things, and in a perfect world these would be THE
reasons why DT was the ONLY high-profile prog-metal band.

However <and I'm going to play devil's advocate here> this is NOT a
perfect world and most people don't listen closely enough to distinguish
DT from "just another hair band." Because of this, there are a few more
reasons why DT is badass and other prog wannabes are just bad.

1.) James fucking LaBrie. Listen to the man's voice. Outside of
classical singers, there is no singer ANYWHERE with a voice with harmonic
content as rich as James's. His voice is huge--it's like a weapon
that not even he can control when he opens his mouth. Partials all over
the place. His voice was created to be recorded. He was meant to be heard
on the radio. With different management, he could have been marketed like
    a George Michael.

2.) LOOK at them. I'm not gay or some kinda hootenanny <not that there's
anything wrong with that>, but these guys are cute. What teenage metal
chick could resist John Petrucci and Kevin Moore in that Take The Time
video? Derek isn't a bad looking guy for that matter. James has nice
eyes no matter what his hair or 'stache are doing. <Just kidding, James!>
Mike Portnoy is an all-American, beer-drinking, fight-watching guy
with whom anyone can identify. Throw in a John Myung to keep it
politically correct. Metal or not, these guys are A&R gold. And speaking
    of which...

3.) These guys were found by a major label that would offer them SOME
<not a lot, mind you> support, and one that knew how to market them. We
heard about all the other great non-DT music through DT, because DT was on
the MTV or the radio EVEN THOUGH WE SAY WE DON'T WATCH IT OR LISTEN TO IT.
Suprising what sinks in and what goes in one ear and out the other.

I know it doesn't give the band much credit, and it doesn't make me feel
any better either, but this is probably how it happened. I do, however,
give the band credit for their sticktoitiveness :) in not giving up. They
EARNED all the success they've acheived and more.

All you die hards who say "yeah, well i've been with them since they were
majesty and i don't need mtv to tell me how gret DT is" need not flame
because you're in the minority, believe me.

Just a remark: I re-read this post and it may sound like a flame.
Let me explicitly state here that it's *NOT* a flame and wasn't intented
to be one. Sorry, but my limitations in expressing myself in another
language are quite disappointing. Now, to the post:

On Sat, 18 Jul 1998, Deedlit wrote:

No. Chicks are never stupid, nor annoying. At most, they are
    slightly misinformed. :-)

    > Anyway, I was wondering what you all would think about some multimedia
    > stuff on a DT album.... You see, I know some of the fans have talents

    > free....

Perhaps I'm a "defective" computer science student :-), but I
really don't care for those multimedia presentations. And I dislike even
more the fact that if the CD had multimedia, then it would have three
    major drawbacks:

            * the multimedia presentations would be designed for windows and
    not everybody has windows running on his/her computers;
            * the multimedia presentations wouldn't be playable all the time
-- only when you have a computer with all the bells and whistles installed
-- so you won't be able to play the multimedia using your Discman or your
    main stereo, which limitates the fun;
            * I'd love to get more music instead of having the multimedia
track. BTW, just to put a filesystem on the CD, that is, to make a mixed
mode CD, with both audio and video, you'd be wasting a lot of precious
space (required to "separate" the portions of the disc).

Some of the arguments above are a bit subjective, but at least the
first two are objective. Now for a completely subjective argument: I
really can't see what's the point in having a CD with multimedia. Just to
have the ego fulfilled with the thought: "Ah, my computer can play these
things" or to show your friends?

I have on Emperor CD with two extra tracks ("Anthems to the
Welking at Dusk", the Century Media release -- yes, Emperor is that band
which only plays noisy things, but that I happen to like :-) ). Besides
the extra tracks, it also has the video to the song "The Loss and Curse of
Reverence". I'm honest to say that I only watched the video 5 or 6 times.
After playing the video that amount of times, I thought: "Am I silly or
what? Using a computer that could be searching for the next Mersenne
primes just to play that video." Well, you get the idea. Most multimedia
presentations are just reinventing the wheel: a video would be more
welcome (and would certainly require less power from our computers), could
be longer and with higher quality...

As I said earlier, this last paragraph is a bit subjective, but I
expect you will see where I'm coming from. After all, it's just
    philosophy.

            I'd appreciate any comments.

            []s, Roger...

I know, I think Geddy and Alex should release an album with Mike on drums while Neil's out of the picture.... Except who would would write the lyrics? They could release that album on the same day too, and maybe have the Pink Floyd-Roger Waters reunion album, the Fish rejoins Marillion and kicks H's ass ten CD box set of new music, and the Metallica regains some balls and starts playing GOOD stuff again album all released on the same day also. That way, not only will there be splooge in my shorts and a coronary, but I think I'll start uncontrollably leaking every other bodily fluid while convulsing on the ground biting my tongue and yelling "11/16 time signature" uncontrollably over and over.

Hey, you've forgot Fates Warning's double live album "Still Life" which also will be released in October too.

    - Yngwie Malmsteen will release a new live album in October/November :-))

    - Also Savatage will release a DOUBLE LIVE ALBUM later this year along with a live video.

    - Royal Hunt have just released "PARADOX LIVE" in Japan. The limited edition box includes also a live video of their incredible Paradox tour. Is there anyone from Japan who have more information about this box ?

Well, this is exactly my opinion.

In the new bluesy section, you can hear Savatage's (trans.. Orchestra) "Christmas Eve".

I've also noticed that the riff in "Just Let Me Breathe" is like Steve Vai's riff in "Still My Bleeding Heart" ! Check it out.

that might work, but remember - any space used for multimedia is not used for audio. With your typical pop band, that's fine, cuz they usually use like 45 minutes of the CD for audio anyway. But DT tends to pack their CDs to the gills, so if you put a multimedia thing on there it'd mean losing music - like maybe 10 minutes worth, depending on how big the multimedia is. Moo.
