I have to disagree with that. I'm only a 'casual fan' of Fates.

weird. And what's that triangular necklace KevMo wears? I beat all three

Hi,
Revolver Records ruled when I was two weeks in NY in 96.
It's West 8th, No. 45, 2nd floor.
It had DT, Satch and I dunno what boots and we spent lots a money there.

Hi guys!
I knew something was wrong with mi post (you know the E# stuff), from
the very moment I hitted the "send" button.
I just got one thing to say:
You are right, I was wrong...
I NEED to take music theory lessons.
Anyway, I still think that E# is a cool signature -but it would be even
cooler if the note did't existed (you know dealing with the
"unrealistic" stuff). ;)
-E# (not a member of the Be-Sharps)
PS: KrogX3: eesharp IS an endangered species. This is a very serious
matter and nothing to be joking around. ;)

I was just informed about "AntiMaxim", a new webZine
dedicated to all of the bands that you KNOW deserve
to be noticed (to quote their webpage).
Derek Sherinian has agreed to do an interview for the
first issue, and you're all invited to submit questions
for it (please mention if you want your name and
location included when they use your question).
You can check out their site (which is being worked
on as you read this) at the following URL :
http://www.gravy.net/~antimaxim
And you can send your questions for Derek to :
This is also the address for any other questions you
may have about the "AntiMaxim" webZine. Soon they will
also have their own mailinglist.
Sounds promising, so check it out. :)

Remember most double Cd's coming out now a days cost the same as
singles (as they well should have from the beginning). So considering
Fates Warning's dedicated fan base, it should sell more or less like
their other albums. Same with DT.

Someone has alerted me to the reappearance of a certain Jeremy Haynes
who many of us remember from past boot trades gone bad. He ripped off a
bunch of people on the jam and then he came back later after a sex
change as Sue Moscardini and ripped some more people off...
Well apparently this addy "jeremy.haynes@home.com" (I guess he has
undone his sex change...) is on the video list that Charlie Dominici has
got going... So beware of anyone named Jeremy Haynes or Sue Moscardini
who lives in Wallingford CT....

Hey!
Where do people get their Age Of Impact discs from. I preordered it from CDNow and their page says it won't ship until the 29th or something like that. The info on Platypus, that it's already released in Europe, is also wrong for what I know. Damn, damn, damn!!! I want those records now! BTW: Did anyone get a good copy of the original broadcast of the latest Liveconcerts thing. This one was butchered I reckon, anyone got it on tape from a good feed and willing to make a copy? Trade? Mail me privately.
On the debate small labels/big labels Chris Cornell said something good along these lines: It's a misconception that people think small labels don't interfer and have opinions on your music and soforth, the difference is that they're know what they're talking about. I find this to be true. While a major label *could* get your music all over the place, they have the money to push it onto radio/TV, advertise in the glossy magazines and working with promotional activities of all kinds, plus they've got an organisation all over the world. The catch is *could*. I have friends in bands that has been signed on major labels and have witnessed, when I working with a music mag over here, how badly things are run.
The majors give the impression that they are very selective and are only looking for the safe successes. At the same time they sign, at a whim, all sorts of artists, talented or not. They throw it all against the wall and see what sticks. Unfortunately people who think they're in the hands of some big, nice, powerful company can just as well have their career starts ruined. I've had friends who sold more demos on their own, not working at it very hard, than later when, for instance, EMI, released a single by them.
A lot of people, not all, at the major companies offices are there, not because of their professionalism or track-record in the business, but because they either ass kissers, good looking and think it's cool to work with rock stars. I seriously doubt that they have a well-thought out marketing plan for the smaller projects they get into, or even that some of the marketing directors have a clue of good marketing policies. All journalists in the field, that I know, feels this way about the situation, and many bands too. You often take a small label representative, who's calling you to talk about a new band and can actually talk about the music and be convincing, more seriously than a person who in the same call tries to sell you Yngwie Malmsteen and Boys II Men citing them both as fantastic. (I'm not saying they ain't, but you get the picture...)
I think it could be reasonable for Fates to release such an album. The don't have to advertise it much, recording is relatively cheap... it's just simple maths, the returns are better. A major company thinks they have to hire the trendiest web bureau to create www.insertbandnamehere.com, and target the advertisement, promotion (interviews etc) wrongly. The costs are enormous, the band is seen as a disappointment for not returning as much as the label has spent, they're dropped and laughed at in the press, or just forgotten. Think about it: Would Rush have been able to continue in today's climate had they released their first couple of albums today. No. They found their form (yes IMO) after a couple of hits'n'misses affairs, that's natural, but not the way it works nowadays.
This is getting extremely long and boring, and I'm jsut venting my own frustrations with the business, but I could continue the discussion by private email. I wonder what other people in bands think. I've been playing for the last 3-4 years in various outfits based round the same group of people. We've built it from ground-up, learning to play our instruments by doing gigs, writing songs and are now planning to release an EP independently, of course. We've had some favourable reviews at raw-indie-zine and others have said they liked us, (no, we're not progmetal - more a kind of conceptual band based round some kind of Voivodish stories, with some Bowie/Floyd/etc influences) and don't really know if we should just give up, or fight. I'd like to hear from people who has marketed their own music - prog or not - on and off the net, and has had some success in it, or not, doesn't really matter. I maybe plan to set up a web site afterwards with the gathered know-how from this and other sources.
That's it. I'd better not proof-read this, cause I'd just find it way out of line and erase it all. There goes the wasted bandwidth.
/Mats

Thats probably St. Marks Place (2nd ave between 8th and 9th streets). Its a really fun and freaky place to be at night..all these guys and gals with blue neon mohawks...it rules! Anyhow..this small street has about 3-4 tiny used cd shops in which I have found GOLD in terms of hard to find used cd's..just be ready to search, and look, and search, and look.
Also check out SLIPPED DISC RECORDS in Valley Stream (about 25 minutes from the city out on Long Island)..I met Portnoy there once shopping with his wife and buying some Reservoir Dogs stuff.
cheers, Carlo (Fates)
