In a message dated 98-07-20 22:38:03 EDT, you write:

    << Abt >>
E# does technically exist... when you alter a chord and need to sharp the E,
it is proper to (even though rare) to refer to it as an E# when within certain
key sigantures... most intermediate theory books will tell you the same.
There are many reasons why you would not name the note F (this is all theory,
practically you are playing an F).

A couple of jams ago someone discussed the JMP-1 and said that the tubes are
there just for look and that the "real" distortion came from a solid state
circuit. Just making sure that's what was said. BTW who was this? They
also added that they knew a tech that opened up the JMP and poked around
inside and found this to be true. How can I get ahold of the tech? Thanks!

As usual Mike Portnoy rocked the house. I really recommend seeing one of these
clinics because you can see how amazing he really is. You can really tell MP
is more than a drummer. He impacts the song and adds lots of stuff. I was
literally right in front of his kit, no more than four feet away from him. He
played, Paradigm Shift, Universal Mind, Erotomania, the middle section of
Metropolis and a kick ass drum solo.

Besides being able to bash the drums, MP can count like a mofo. He was
counting and showing the crowd how to play lots of weird time sigs. I'm sure
MP could pass one of those legendary Frank Zappa auditions where you have to
transcribe a section and play it altered in a thousand ways and a million time
    sigs.

The only disappointment of the night was that I did not get a cymbal, which I
should have won twice. The first time was a joke. I had to leave my front row
seat to turn off my car's lights just as he was about to begin the last song.
He said he was about to give me the cymbal but ... Then as he was about to
sign some of my stuff he asked a trivia question for the cymbal. I blurted out
the correct answer, but a store employee conspired to give the cymbal to
someone else. YOU OWE ME PORTNOY! :)

Other cool stuff from the clinic:
    - Before the clinic began the new live album was playing. It sounds great.
There are no vocal overdubs. JL is sounds stroing, but he's not perfect. I
like it that way. If I want to hear perfection, I listen to studio albums. It
has a cool, primal feel, much like Pantera's Official Live, which I consider
to be the best live album.
    - The video should be coming out. MP said he has to sort everything out and
meet the deadline. Hopefully it will be released in october.
    - MP talked about himself and the other three from LTE wanting to make another
    album.
    - MP is the coolest. He loves to talk with the fans. He remembered people's
names from clinics years ago. He was also sharp to point out that the pics I
had him sign (featuring him on his five piece kit) were not taken from the
show in Ft. Lauderdale because he did not have that kit until the second leg.
The pics were from NY last May.

I have no idea why anyone would want to take a crappy quality encoded
file like Real Audio and convert it to a .wav file, but that's just me.
Someone on here asked in one of the latests jams, and ask and ya shall
    recieve.

    http://mercury.gmsnet.com/~shadow/dsi_ra14.zip

I'm not tech support so if you can't figure it out, you're on your own.
As far as encoding a RA file from a .wav file, you can download an
encoder from www.real.com or for those of you that are serious about it,
you might be able to talk me into Real Publisher.

Anyway, I do not recommend RA for quality, because the quality blows. If
you want a quality encoded file, go with MP3, it's CD Quality audio at
    about 1MB/minute or better compression.

Any questions, let me know.... later.

(and, yes, I am working on the FAQ... new changes are online without
being announced here, once I have a more final version, everything will
be official, so don't worry. Email with more questions, etc...)

    That's what he said.

Yesterday, my brother has bought Angra's new single "Lisbon".
    It's a 3 track maxi CD.

    1)Lisbon
    2)Make Belive (acoustic version)
    3)Angel's Cry (original demo version)

In "Lisbon" which is half ballade like "Make Belive", I can hear a full

If you are approached by Joel Anthony (toneadd9@aol.com) for a trade, ignore
him. I sent him $30 worth of xerox tab in March. He failed to send my videos
(in exchange for the xerox tab). Not only did he fail to send it, but he
admits he received my tab and will not finish his part of the trade. I have
constantly sent him Instant Messages stating "Send me my tapes". Today he
responded. This exchange via Instant Message will show you why you should
never enter into a trade with toneadd9:

Calvin 6S: Send me my tapes
    Tone add9: U R SUCH A FUKKIN WHINER
Calvin 6S: And you are a fucking scam artist
Tone add9: SEND MORE TAB BOOKS
    Tone add9: AND CASH

It is one thing to have disputes over mail getting lost during a trade - but
to admit you have received your end of the trade and then openly say you will
not complete your part of the trade is inexcusable. I know I will never
receive my end of the trade from Joel (lives in San Antonio, TX), but I
thought I would let the other traders out there know about this loser.

    Sorry for wasting bandwidth

Another way is/was to order Dead Air from Fight Evil Records.
I pre-ordered though, I don't know if they are doing it anymore.

Regarding multimedia on cds, I probably have about
10 cds with mm on them and most I have looked
at only once and some never. It's not a big incentive
for me to buy the disc. I buy a cd for music. They
should either sell the mm seperately or include it
on a second disc so there's room for the music
like Alan Parsons did on his last one.
    My 1.5 cents,
    Trevor

Dear Simon and jammers who responded my post about Japanese scene.
    Thanks for your warm reply!!

    >didn't know X-Japan wasn't `respected' in Japan. This is very
    >interesting.

It is hard to explain the situation in Japan. I told my opinion on music
scene already, but most Japanese HR/HM fans strictly listen to American
and European bands including Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Iron
Maiden, Shadow Gallery, Symphony X and so on. Most such people do not
like X-Japan, IMO. Maybe my opinion might contradict. I am one of very
few people who listen and enjoy both domestic (Japanese) and foreign
bands. On the other hand, there are some Japanese listeners strictly
listen to domestic music only. Then such people look down foreign bands.
This is pretty complicated situation to explain. Some people respect
foreign music alot, but others worship Japanese pop and rock music.

Before I came to US, I was a fan who only listen to American and
european music (except for some great Japanese hard rock bands I
listened are Loudness, Earthshaker, and Vow Wow). Because Japanese
musicians and groups borrow the musical ideas from Americans. And 80s
Japanese pop and rock music was not always good quality. But after 90s,
there are some great bands like X-Japan and Bz. If you are curious, I
    will continue discuss this topic.

    >`Hide with Spreading Beaver' (or something). Is this another one of
    >Hide's side projects? It seemed very popular (along with the band
    SMAP,
    >which seemed to be everywhere on tv ha ha ha ;) ).

Yes, that is Hide of X-Japan!! I think Hide with Spread Beaver was
supporsed to be his main project after X-Japan broke up. But you know
what happened to him tragically!! Then of course, most Japanese HR fans
    hate SMAP.

    >Is Dream Theater really popular in Japan, or just an underground
    >phenomenon like here in America?

Ok, what I can say is that Yngwie Malmsteen and Mr.Big and Bon Jovi are
extremely popular bands in Japan, oh and Aerosmith and Van Halen. Such
bands on the above probably are popular among both two sides fans that I
mentioned on the previous paragraph. However, Dream Theater never hit
top 10, but top 20. I guess Angra hit top 20 in the album chart. I guess
Images and Words sold pretty well and Awake also sold well. But compare
to selling of X-Japan and Bz, their selling number is not enough.
Simply, not many people know Dream Theater. For example, if you ask
Japanese people on the street, most people know Bon Jovi and X-Japan,
but probably more than 90% people have never heard of Dream Theater.
Funny thing is that Dream Theater is way more popular than Poison and
Warrant. Dream Theater is inbetween Popular states and Underground
States. In the case of practicing Japanese Musicians, 90% people know
Dream Theater and DT is way respected.

If you are curious about Japanese music scene, I will continue
discussing this. Thank you for replying me.

I keep asking myself this question for some time. FII is by far the most
commercial album of DT and DT wanted to attract a new fanbase. So why
did they release only one single off FII? And why asking Desmond Child
to make the song You not me more radio friendly while not giving it a
change??? I think that song would do well as a single. Other
possibility: Peruvian Skies; this would attract Pink Floyd fans and
    Metallica fans!

So why bothering all those commercial songs on FII, while releasing only
one of them as a single? I think a majority of the DT fans rather hear
more progressive songs, like I do. I think Metropolis II will do ;)

actually, what they said was the exact opposite - the real
distortion does come from two 12ax7 tubes running at full
voltage. Mike Blevins said it, he has a JMP-1 in his rack.

marshall JCM 900s used some solid state parts to provide some
of the distortion, since this design did not get really crunchy
    until you cranked it up.
