Has anyone heard of Aztec Jade? I heard a sound clip
of them and they sounded pretty good. Is it worth it getting
    their latest CD?

    Thanks,

A thousand monkeys in Trevor W. Hoit's basement typed:

I'm not saying that keyboardists are an inferior race. I'm simply
reminding Arash (and everyone else, indirectly) that the Ytsejam as a
whole decided a while back that this list is no place for a collection
of survey answers. I, too, am interested in what other people think
about the greatest keyboard solos of all time -- but we (at least the
majority of us) decided that we'd rather wait to see one post with the
results of the survey, and not everyone's opinion individually. I'm
not suggesting that Arash is a bad guy, or that you're going to hell
if you post your thoughts, or that anyone deserves to be flamed. I'm
just reminding everyone that there is a Ytsejam rule (right up there
with the Top-10 lists) against this sort of thing. Now, if a majority
of us wanted the rule changed, that would be a different thing. But
in the best interests of those of us who pay for net access, that's
    the way things currently stand.

    Greetings ye 'jamanoids....

After reading my Portnoy clinic review, Matt J. remarked:

    >Love that saying (from the latest clinic review) -- Portnoy: Chops on Loan
    >from God. I just found a place that does 9get this) custom calculators.
    >What better merchandise for Mike than calculators...
    >ahhh, fergetit. ^_^

Actually, that was one thing I forgot to mention. Mike said that when he's
sitting there writing with the guys and they're bouncing ideas off each
other, he sits there with a calculator thinking how he can break up several
measures. I.e., if he's got four measures of 4/4 or 16/16, then he has 16
quarter notes to play with, so he can break it up as 3-3-4-2 or 4-4-3-5 or
whatever. So he sits there with his calculator working out possible
combinations and permutations and different ways to play the four measures
    (or whatever).

So.....maybe he does need his own calculator. What say you, Mike?

    Brian H. wants to know:
    >Has anyone out there ordered discs from The Laser's Edge? How are
    >they? Reliable? Quick?

Reliable yes. Quick no. They have great prices and a great stock and almost
always have what you're looking for -- but it'll take some time to get to
you. I ordered nine discs via credit card once and it took a month and a
half for the order to get to me. My advice is to pay by check; I got my
discs in two weeks when paying by check.

    Ta,
    Phil

I think Official Mike Portnoy merchandise would kick. Of course, every
member would need some sort of clever merchandise.

James LaBrie's signature Green Bay Packer Cheesehead...

John Myung's magnetic poem creator with words like inflexible...

    John Petrucci's "Killing Hand" backscratcher...

Derek Sherenian's pocket keyboards (you remember those, don'cha?) that
use the sample of that nasty-cool sound from Lines in the Sand...

Kevin Moore's imprint of Doc Martens... (special edition collectable!)

    Whaddya think? ^_^

    Here's my picks:

Stu Hamm: Quahogs Anyone, Moonlight Sonata, and Blue Powder

For those of you who haven't yet experienced one of the most incredible
bassists of all time, catch Joe Satriani live. Stu does an extended solo
section that will drop your jaw to the floor, guaranteed. As if that wasn't
enough, he also played on Steve Vai's Passion and Warfare, which should alone
ensure him a place in musical history.

    Hi there everyone,
Well, I was contemplating whether or not to order
Charlie's early DT video, and decided to ask mike not only
about the validity of this "Charlie" character, but also
his personal thoughts/feelings on the whole thing.
With Mike's permission, I'm going to forward his reply-
under the subject of: Your Blessing.

Maybe this has been standard operating procedure, but has there been a
charge for all (or any) of the Portnoy clinics? The Indianapolis clinic is
charging $10, which I'll gladly fork over, but it seems totally stupid to
let people sit there and videotape the things if they are charging
admission. Plus, isn't this paid for by whomever he's endorsing? Am I
    missing something?

I think I'll do that too - have a Portnoy party at my house and show my
video, charging all my friends $5 a head. I love the smell of capitalism
    in the morning...

well, i thot since i was the relayer of his original announcement of this
video, i'd send you guys this one too (and a LOT more promptly this time)
posted wed. july 22nd at 7 21 eastern:

    Hey gang!
I cant tell you how hard it is to keep up with all the email inquiries
about the "VINTAGE" video I'm putting together...some of you are asking lots
of questions in the emails..I cant really take the time to answer them, but I
promise I will after the initial barage of email dies down(if it ever does)
any way...The video will be at least an hour long(probably more) and I have to
    say..Its been a while since I watched it..it's F*&%CKIN HILARIOUS!
By that I mean..we were horsing around alot..the musical stuff consists of
some jams..and actual rehearsals of songs for the WDADU album(although we were
still called "MAJESTY" at the time). I Promise you..the thing will be a
collector's item..I will only make a few hundred of them..and they will be of
HIGH QUALITY..since I was shooting the film myself(I have the original tape).
I will tell you that the cost is getting a little out
    of hand(Editing,copies,mailing,labels,quality control..etc.) I really want to
keep the price reasonable (mailing costs will be included) but I'm sure you
guys want the thing to be clear and with good sound..so...thats the trick,I
guess. Everyone who has already responded is on my Email list..and will be
getting an email from me with ordering info and price as soon as I have it
    together.
I hope you all will enjoy it as much as I have..and still do!
                             Peace
                                    CD

    hope you enjoyed
and whenever i notice Charlie "Chuck" Dominici posting stuff to the aol
boards, i'll (not to overuse the word, but:) relay it to the jam

    Dear Alex!

Hi, I saw your posting about Japanese music show.
Except for Osaka and Tokyo, we seldomly watch prog metal video clips on
music show. We lamented how come Japanese broadcast did not play such
videos like Dream Theater, Queeensryche, Savatage, and so on.
If someone has a satelite TV program, such as WowWow and MusicBox, then
he/she can check out some great videos. But not many people can see the
    HR/HM shows.
Since I left Japen about three years ago, maybe the situation changed a
    little bit better.
I heard that some viewers in Tokyo and Kanto basin areas can watch the
videos like Royal Hunt, Dream Theater, and so on.
In my life, I only watched some power metal and prog bands, such as
Savatage, Queensryche, Testament, Dream Theater, Vicious Rumors,
Annihilator, and so on (which I love all the time, and I was lucky to
    tape..=)
However, most Japanese fans are still happy to catch the songs on the
    radio.
I am not sure I could answer your question or not. Situation in Japan is
not so good in most areas. When I was in Japan, I always try to see my
favorite Hard Rock bands as much as possible, but most video clips are
    almost pops and dance music.

    Hello, Metasection

Yes, I agree with your opinion.
When I came to here, I expected to see better programs in the United
States. I think early 90's on MTV Headbangers ball is still great as
    well as late 80's.
However, Nirvana and Seatle bands hit the music scene. MTV became emptyV
(somebody mentioned this expression, so I borrowed this word).
But, problem of MTV Japan is that only Tokyo and Kanto basin viewers can
watch, but not most Japanese viewers.

Luckly, my cousins lives in Kanto area, so I could ask them to send a
copy of MTV Japan. In late 80's, I enjoyed watching such great bands
    live show and video clips.

As well as MTV Japan, there are a few great Japanese music shows for
American/European bands called Music Tomato and Guitar World. MT and GW
featured some guitar heroes and the bands which you guys love to see.
But I have never senn such shows. If I go back to Japan, I want to ask
my cousins to send and make a copy. Then I will post how I feel these
    programs later on this post.

Hi, i know that this was discussed about 2 months ago, so ill ask for
private email instead. My brother is taking music lessons, to start
playing keyboards/piano, we need to buy a keyboard for him, of course,
we tried out the Trinity and fell in love with it ( who wouldnt ) but of
course hell never convince my parents to shell out the money in this
stage of his "career". So im asking for suggestions, for a good
keyboard, in the 800-1000$ limit. Basically were focusing on the
"quality" of the sounds on it. ( although other extras well.. you know )
So if anyone can point me in the right direction... the one we were
most likely to buy before i got the idea to write here was an Alesis
QS6... Any help would be greatly appreciated..

    Thanx..

Just got home from Mike's clinic in Dallas. Mike was awesome as usual. The
clinic set was the same as posted for Atlanta.

Get to the clinic early - I heard most of the live album. It sounds great.

The beginning of the clinic got off to a rough start thanks to the
numbskulls at Guitar Center. They put the CD player on top of one of the
monitors, so as soon as Mike fired up Paradigm Shift and the bass kicked
in - the cd started skipping all over the place. Mike was a little
    hacked...

Also - some funny notes - before the clinic - the head dude at guitar center
came out and told us 'Chad' was about to come on. The last drum clinic at
Guitar Center was Chad Smith from the RHCP. Everyone got a kick out of
that. And then to top that some guy later in the Q&A session called him
'Mark'. Yes - we have a lot of idiots in Texas...

The clinic was packed. I think they had counted on 100 people, but about
    300 showed up.

Also - Mike confirmed that the label has green lighted the home video! He
eluded to 'unreleased songs' making the video (i.e. Speak To Me, Cover My
Eyes, etc.) NO - he did not name these! Anyway - he said that he just
received the footage yesterday and he's going to try to put something
together before the deadline so that it can come out when the live album
    does.

I had Mike sign my 1997 fan club cd and he said they would be doing some
kind of fan club cd again this year.

I also got to meet Ryan Whitaker - very nice guy.

All in all a great evening!

    Later!
    Jason

    OK,

In the event one of you out there are intending on renewing your membership
and live in the U.S., be warned that now you must send cash directly to
    England/Neil.

This bites my ass because I sent mine via money order to the "new" New York
address and in ONE MONTH it was sent back to me saying the P.O. box
    was closed.

I e-mailed Neil and told him my situation. It would appear that the
New York end of things quit doing the New York end of things. The P.O.
box is CLOSED. So now I must cash in my money order and figure out a way
    to send CASH to England.

I don't know about any of you out there, but sending green backs over seas
seems a little risky and a bit of a crappy situation.

If it wasn't such a cool investment, I would say the hell with it. But, it
would appear that my green bills will be travelling the deep Atlantic; One
    way or another.

    -Jeff E.
