I just found out that the 7/27 clinic at Mom's in Louisville, KY is $5
    also.

Hey, if that's what it takes to keep all the people who have nothing
better to do on a Monday night than take up space at the clinic, that's
    fine with me.

BTW, are any 'Jammers going to the Louisville clinic? If so, e-mail
me and we'll meet up there.

Hey, someone on this list listens to (or has heard of) ICP. For all you
who have not heard these guys they are extremely funny, I suggust you
all try to give it a listen sometime. As a disclaimer it is rap, so its
not something I could spend days listening to, and I'm not gonna play it
for a hot date, but it's a riot once in a while. BTW Jason, where you
from? I'm from Ann Arbor, Mi, so ICP is close to home. Anyhoo dont want

If you're a prog-metal-only head or just don't like jazz, you most
certainly will want to skip this post.

If you enjoy jazz, various members of the Saxophone family, the Fretless
Bass, that Electric Rhodes keyboard sound, have heard Frank Gambale
amaze you on Guitar or Dave own you on Drums, you may still want to skip
this post; but go out and buy the disc anyways :) (Adam 'Sociology Bud'
Barnhardt, are you still on the list? Yeah, Dave is still a quite scary
    drummer :)

There's actually quite a variety of musical genres represented on the
disc including R&B, fusion, funk, straight ahead jazz, and a song that
might remind you a little of the Mission Impossible tune.

My favorite tune so far is Someone's Watching. From the liner notes,
    Dave says:

"[Working title: 'Sting'], as is reminiscent and perhaps a bit inspired
by one of his sultry jazz melodies. This is a mood piece which was
written around a continuous, hypnotic keyboard motif. Frank Gambale
plays some great stuff on 12-string electric guitar and a wonderfully
tasteful 'sitar' solo. Very fitting for this cool vibe, hope you like
    it!"

The sax definitely gives it that 'Sting' kinda feel (DTC: I also hear
simliarities with the end of Another Day. Not surprising they'd sound
similiar, it's a sop sax and Jay Beckenstein is considered a jazz
musician). Dave is so humble he doesn't mention himself, so I will.
There's some cymbal work in there which I can only describe as magical.
The sound of the fretless bass on this tune is sweet! There's no
question about this being a mood piece. You'll go "Sting? Who's that?"
    afterwards... or sooner ;)

The slowest song on the disc, they pick it up a little towards the
middle after the sitar solo, modulate (hope that's the right word :) a
few times, then take it back down and the song leaves as quietly as it
    arrived. It's just a 5 1/2 minute soothing, goose-bump inducing, hook;
yet the song could go on for another 10 minutes and I wouldn't tire of
    it.

Some will just not be all that impressed with the song, dismissing it as
too simplistic. For me at least, this is such a well constructed song
from start to finish. Throughout it shows how very few notes played in a
particular measure can still make a song work. There's all kinds of
little things going on in there with accenting and trading off where one
instrument will be up front in the mix. That is what has always
impressed about jazz musicians: their uncanny control of volume and the
ability to play off each other. (DTC: The guys in DT exhibit this
ability. Is this something they teach at jazz schools?)

Yeah, there are more upbeat, higher speed, kick ass grooves elsewhere on
the disc (Big B Little B is a song where you'll find Dave going nuts for
a couple of minutes. But Someone's Watching completely takes over me,
and without so much as one lyric! Oh wait, there aren't any lyrics on
    the whole disc :)

His web page has more info on the new disc (somewhere inside
http://www.daveweckl.com/indexdw.htm). Looks like he's doing some
    clinics.

    Regards,
    Jon

I have not heard much mentioned about Vanden Plas here on the jam. To refresh your memory, Vanden Plas was one of DT's supporting acts for the European FII tour. These guys are awesome! If you have not heard Vanden Plas yet, treat yourself to a listen. Download this MP3 file from VP's home page. Go to the sound samples section and download "You Fly." Here's the link: http://www.inf.fu-berlin.de/~goebel/vp/ Use Internet Explorer to grab the file, Netscape may give you a little trouble with MP3 files. If you don't have an MP3 player, and you are using a Pentium class processor, download Winamp 1.9 here. http://www.winamp.com/main.html Seriously, these guys rock... Kinda reminiscent of DT's I&W stuff.

Dammit, don't just keep scrolling.... Download that MP3. NOW! Yeah I'm talking to YOU.

ditto on this post. i just wanted to add another endorsement of this fine musical product. actually, i bought it because someone right here on the jam mentioned it, so i know there are at least 3 of us who own this sucker. anyway, even if all you are is a raging prog-head, you should try to broaden your horizons by picking this album up. there's definitely a lot of musicianship going on here.

i'd have to say my favorite track is the first one, called "the zone". like the title implies, this thing just flat out grooves. plus, dave sends out props to ringo starr in the liner notes...

everybody has his/her own opinion about the best solo, which is very individual. i prefer orgasm like solos, and melodic solos, such as david gilmour provides us with, BUT WHO CARES!!!!! so stop filling the digests (and my trashbox) with that boring best solo, best instrumental stuff, just lets talk about the solos individually, if you want. why someone likes this one, why someone dislikes that.. im getting bored reading Re: BEST F*+# i have ever had ;) but, talknig about it already i think most of the best solos ever produced on earth do come from gilmour, especially on animals! :)

could someone help me to find the mp3 version of eve (one that really is LOCATED somewhere :-| )

although i dislike the idea of transferring music on to other instruments i really enjoyed listening to ytsejam for piano, this one really rocks!

As for Fave Bass Solos: 1) Anything by Stuart Hamm including his Vai, Satriani, and Solo album work. 2) Billy Sheehan's bass work on Eat'em and Smile by David Lee Roth. It absolutely RIPS ASS!!! And don't forget his Mr.Big songs like "Addicted To That Rush". 3) Any and all John Myung basswork. (not many solos to choose from, eh?)

As for Fave Key Solos: 1) Space-Dye Vest and Eve, of which, I consider some of the best DT-piano compositions/KevMo stuff around. 2) Derek Sherinian's work in "A Change Of Seasons" 3) Any of Jen's Johannsens(sp) sizable catalog with Yngwie Malmsteen.

All of this of course is IMO. So There!

Someone asked a two-part question about the Laser's Edge Cd store. Reliable? Yes. Quick? No. Maybe it's because I placed orders with a credit card (he has some ridiculous policy about only taking c/c for orders over a certain amount, which surely violates the law), but I had to wait about two months for each of the orders I placed. He isn't going to rip you off, but you might wait awhile.

Speaking of cds from the Laser's Edge, I got my shipment the other day. Included were:

    Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly

Well, this is not as good as "Control and Resistance" - IMO. The singing is not as good (Jason McMaster vs. Alan Tecchio), the guitar-playing isn't as good (Billy White vs. Ron Jarozembek), and the songs suffer. Overall, it's not too bad...

Blind Guardian - Nightfall in Middle-Earth

I think some people have already reviewed this. I like it, but anytime you have a 60+ minute cd based on one concept, you are talking art vs. casual music. The music is lush and thick, but the lyrical content in odd - fantasy- based, and sometimes those German accents make me laugh. Eye-Ron for iron. That sorta thing. I am not sure I like this disc as much as "Imaginations from the Other Side," but time will tell.

    Conception - The Last Sunset

Boy, do I like Conception. This band is just outstanding. The guitar work is exceptional. I have all the rest of Conception's cds, and this is no disappointment. Each cd has its own character. Especially note-worthy is track ten. I don't have the case handy, so I can't tell you, but it's ten minutes of prog metal heaven.

    Mercury Rising - Building Rome

Whoa! I thought "Upon Deaf Ears" wasn't bad, but it seemed a bit bland and derivative. Clarence's vocals were in too high a register, and he sounded like the dude from the first Toxik album. The guitars were non-descript and I could barely sit through the cd in one sitting. This is the opposite. I cannot get this cd out of the cd player. The recording is crystal clear. Where did they record this? In Maryland? Mike Blevins, take Division to this studio, and hire this producer. The guitar tones are brilliant. Clarence has kept his forays into the stratosphere to a minimum, and he shows a nice middle range that complements the music. Their use of dynamics is much-improved. I have to say that I wasn't expecting much from this cd - I had seen them recently live (down one guitarist) and I couldn't really grasp the new material. This has been the best surprise of the year, and if they don't watch out - the best cd of the year.
