    Greetings ye 'jamanoids...

Yesterday's Mike Portnoy drum clinic in Marietta, GA was OUTSTANDING. I broke all speed records getting from Athens to Marietta so I'd have a spot up front.

Mike was in fine form, starting off with a five minute drum solo that just basically left the crowd with dropped jaws. It is so much fun to watch Mike play because you can see he's having so much fun playing!

After the solo he talked for a bit about odd time sigs and mathematics and how all musical signatures and groupings can be broken down into groups of numbers. The typical stereotype of "dumb rock musician" or "dumb drummer" goes right out the window when you listen to Mike. This guy is smart and he knows what he's talking about. He explained how he can get away with playing in 7/8 for several measures while his bandmates are playing 5/4 and so on and so forth.

He played "Paradigm Shift" from LTE and stopped to expand further on musical horizons and pushing the envelope. Then he played "Kindred Spirits" and awed us further. He then went on to play bits of the middle section of Metropolis Pt. 1, explaining as he went what time sig he was playing in, and counting out loud as he played to show us. Then he played the entire middle section, drawing it all together, with audience members providing vocal accompaniment for the various instruments. (I provided the keyboards; the bass and keyboard solos were very interesting :) ).

After astounding us with Met Pt. 1, he did a question and answer session, then played Erotomania. After Erotomania, he answered a few more questions and then finished up with "Universal Mind". After taking a break to towel off, he hung out for a long time signing autographs and talking with everybody.

A few interesting things (from the Q&A sessions and chats):

-- I asked him if there would be any more LTE discs, possibly with Jens Johannsen and Billy Sheehan (whom he'd mentioned the possibility of working with in the LTE liner notes). He said he'd still love to work with those guys, but the current lineup *is* LTE and any further stuff from them will be with that lineup. He says he would be delighted to record more LTE stuff and to tour in support of it; it just depends on everyone's schedules.

-- He apologized for the DT/ELP/DP tour not coming anywhere near us; unfortunately it was "their" tour not DT's, so they can't really make the decisions.

-- He is now using a special snare constructed by Tama, which allows him to adjust its tension while playing for different sounds. It's on his kit at home, so we didn't get to see it in action, but the drummers in the audience were drooling over that one.

-- He went over the syncopated beat toward the end of "New Millennium" and mentioned that Kevin Shirley called it the "Octo Surprise", since much of the beat is played on an (octablock? octagon? Not sure of the term here).

-- Two guys near the front were wearing hats they'd had made up that said "Portnoy: Chops on Loan from God". Mike saw them and wanted to see one. The guy tossed it to him, and he read it and went "Cool!" He then wanted to know "Did you get one for me?" and the guy just said "It's yours." Mike thanked the guy and then saw to it that the fellow got one of the drum heads they were handing out in the contest. Class act.

Mike, if you happen to read this, thanks again for the clinic. It was a lot of fun and we all look forward to seeing you (with or without DT!) again soon.

Anybody who gets an opportunity to go to one of the clinics: Go. Go now. Go yesterday.

    Ta, Phil

    Hi there,

Now that's a thread I can jump into...

I personally have a problem with Moore solos - most of them or too fast and are played for the sake of playing... Two Moore solos made into my list: - Learning to Live - Scarred (definitely the best Moore solo)

Derek solos: - Trial of Tears

Jordan Rudess solos: - Masada (off of RMP) - Paradigm Shift (the first one - not the oriental sounding one)

Mark Kelly solos: - She Chameleon (I'm pretty sure it's a keyboard although it may be synthesized guitar)

Keith Emerson solos: - Most of Tarkus and Karn Evil 9

    Chick Corea solos: - Spain

Okay, I'd like to add to this thread a sub-thread: Bass solos.

My favourite one is Pete Trewaves or however he spells his name in Margaret from the B'sides Themselves CD.

    Cheers,

There was some talk a few months ago about instituting a penalty for people who posted in HTML and/or MIME formats. People still do this and it still messes up people whos mail readers do'nt support those formats (MIME especially). In many cases in Eudora 4.0, EVERY message after a MIME post is unintelligible. Needless to say it's hateful when one of these people gets a post as the first message of a particular digest. The whole Jam is crap.

So I'm just curious to know if there's anything that can be done about this. In case people don't know they're doing this, a few recent MIME posters are:

What needs to happen, is one of the mainsteam stations needs to be brave enough, that for a trial period of time, say a day or a week, all it plays is music music (ie. prog, classical, jazz etc. yeah ok, flame me). Then, just see how the listening figures change, if at all, and what the usual mainstream listeners thought of it.

Yes, I know this is incredibly unlikely, but why don't we all target a station.

    It's time to rise.

Or use the cute 'lil URL I posted earlier :

Months ago when everyone wrote about his favorite guitar solo of all time, nobody said something like "This is a DT mailing list and you shouldn't ..." Actually, I myself have send my favorite guitar solo's.
