How does one promote a band that seems to fly in the face of the
industry's conventions? Long song lengths, technical proficeny, lyrical
substance.....it's like looking at one of those workbooks they'd give you
in kindergarten showing a baseball, a football, a basketball, and a house
and ask you which one doesn't belong. DT's the house. Even the so-called
"commercial" songs on FII are only commercial in comparison to the band's
catalog, not to the unfamiliar ear. In the 80s and early 90s, Hollow Years
would have been HUGE (think "Silent Lucidity"). I guess my point here is
that considering that DT is such an outlier, any major label would have a
tough time marketing DT. Does that mean that DT does not belong on a major
label? Not necessarily. All that means is that any major label they are
going to be on is going to have to work twice as hard to "break" them. And
if you're in the promotions or marketing department and you only have
8 - 10 hours in a work day, who are you going to be encouraged to work: a
relatively unknown bunch of un-hip proggers, or a flavor of the month
alternative or dance group? Of course the upside to the majors is that if
people want your album, chances are they can get it, not to mention
their pull with radio and MTV.

Agreed. The climate has improved drastically over the last couple of
years. Melody is actually beginning to creep back into the mainstream. But
we still have a long way to go.

You hardly hear bands like Nirvana and Hole on the radio anymore, why?
because they suck and people and the music industry is smartening up.
    >
I don't think it has anything to do with smarts. Nirvana has been history
for a long time, but their influence is still very present (Bush, Days Of
The New, etc). And I heard Hole is putting out another album. I
wish Courtney would stick to acting.

I totally believe that the music industry will start promoting bands

    Hello again, people:

It's quite interesting the way that a song with a somewhat North
African theme or melody turns out to be a kick-ass composition in
the end! Not only these two, but I find myself like in trance when I
listen to Blue Murder's 'The Valley of the Kings', Led Zep's
'Kashmir', Rainbow's 'Eyes of Fire' or 'Stargazer'. Maybe it's got
something to do with the repetitive riffs and constant rhythm. Does
    anybody remember other similar songs?

    On DT lyrics:
    >>I even read an article where Derek Sherinian said one of the biggest
    >>differences in the new DT material is that the lyrics aren't as
    >>"Dungeons & Dragons" as the older stuff.

    >OK, let me commit some blasphamy here. The biggest problem I have
    >enjoying FII is the lyrics.

I think that the main difference between FII and pre-FII DT albums
is that the new lyrics are punctual and thus, easier to understand,
whilst previous lyrics are more ethereal and could mean whatever the
listener wanted them to. So, it depends more on the receiving end.
No problem with a content like Peruvian Skies but, I feel I'm not
'forced' to 'think' as I was before.

I see there's a double live album coming. Couldn't it be triple?

Something else, I lost all my jams from 3962 to 4001, both
inclusive. Could anyone be so kind as to send them to the following
    address?
    ldbp@rivernet.com.au
    Thank you in advance!

Actually, I think the breakpoint of most label albums is about 60,000 albums.
Parallel's actually got airplay on certain radio stations, and that reached
sales of 150K units in the U.S. By the far the biggest selling Fates album.

Well, Fates IS coming out with a double live album.

Ashouriha didn't really want to take a survey, but wanted to start a new TOPIC/THREAD, and used the wrong word. I guess we would have to ask him, though. I think it's a great thread, being an amateur keyboardist myself, and think it's as relevent as fave guitar solos, which we've done in the past, unless you've got something against keyboardists in general, in which case we could start the guitarists/keyboardist debate again, that, to my nipples, was boring as hell. Anyway, I like reading the responses to the "Survey" right here on the Jam. IMHO, Trevor ps Calvin is a good trader.

I have to disagree with most of this. Granted, Big Wreck may have more talent than your average 90's grunge band, but as to Creed and MB20, I don't hear it - what I hear is Bush. :)

You hardly hear Nirvana and Hole simply because they are no longer the "flavor-of-the-month". I think that bodes POORLY for prog on the radio, simply because by the time they *do* play any of it on there, it'll be on for a few weeks, then on to the next "big thing". Blink and you'll miss it.

It's *never* safe to say the music industry is "smartening up". The only way they'll ever cater to prog fans is when they realize that they can exploit them to make more money.

No, you can't. Make that GOOD traders list! Calvin is a VERY reliable trader. I sent him $60 for an I&W tab book he had to buy for me (and several others) from Japan - get them mailed to himself, and send to each of us he did the great favor to. Not only did he do the job. He informed us about the progress of the order from Japan. I have only good things to say about Calvin. And, I don't hesitate to believe that the little Instant Message gig he posted to the jam is legitimate... Toneadd9.. send to Calvin what's part of your deal!

    The best keyboard solos:

    - Tom Scholz "Foreplay / Long Time" (not technically a solo, but the song ROX, heh) - Jordan Rudess "State of Grace" (along w. pretty much everything else from LTE) - Anything by Kevin Moore or Derek Sherinian

Hmm. I just realized that many of the CDs in my collection feature either stellar bass work or guitar work, but no drums/keys. Maybe this thread will help me branch off into a new direction.

    Greetings one and all

After a lengthy absence from the jam, I find myself looking at recent posts about the trend in music on the radio today. Here in San Diego, there are several excelent radio stations. But to my extreme dismay, all attempts to have ANYTHING prog (other than Rush) played on the radio are effectively ignored. Is it my imagination or are the radio stations too scared to play prog? I believe this is the case. Prog is, to most radio stations to "Out there" to be played on a regular basis. I realize there are exceptions, but for the most part, prog and radio are not a happy couple. So all of our favorite bands must suffer through the indignity of having great music, but not being allowed to have the "common" people hear it. So my question is, what do we, as prog fans, do about it? I do agree that there is a change coming, as is right and proper, but will this change truly inculde prog? Possibly. The way I see it, prog will be played as long as the songs are sis minutes and under. Again, there will be exceptions, but I seriously doubt you will hear ACoS on mainstream radio anytime soon. Or APSoG either. Well, that's my Point of View. Take it where you will.

    Hey everyone...

Actually the problem is related to billing issues with InterNIC. I'm working on having this resolved by the end of today.
