Phil, thanks alot for the info about MP's clinic, I sure wish I could
have seen it, Mike has got to be one of the best drummers out there, and
is certainly one of the classiest and nicest entertainers out there.
Being more of a horn man, I'm usually of the attitude(wrong of course),
that drummers seem to always get in the way. Listening to guys like
Mike Portnoy and Buddy Rich certainly prove how you can show incredible
skill while still complementing other players....

    >does anyone of you know how to decode into mp3? >what do i need how does it work? >(man im too stupid for computers......)

Here is Bogie's very quick guide to MP3 decoding/encoding:

To decode an MP3 file into a .WAV file:

    1. Download the latest version of WinAmp 2. Under Output preferences, choose to output to a file (So, when you play the MP3, it will be output to a .WAV file which can then be plopped right onto a CD-R.)

To encode a WAV file into an MP3 file:

    1. Download WinDac to rip a track from a CD (This will give you your .WAV file) 2. Download L3Enc 3. If you are 3733t, find a registration code for L3Enc to encode at 128kbps. (Otherwise, you'll have to encode at 112kbps by default) 4. Follow the instructions to encode a WAV file as an MP3.

So, basically, when in doubt, RTFM!

    Hope I helped a little...

    Take care, Bogie

Oh-oh! Using WinAmp isn't the best way to convert an MP3 file to a WAV file. Certainly, it's the fast, but not the best if you're concerned about quality. The best way to decode is to use l3dec.

    What does 3733t mean??

I just got back from the drum clinic in Dallas, and all I can say is wow!!!! I got there really early and got to hear him mess around on the set before he went to the hotel to rest. I asked him if he was going to rock tonight, he said "I'll either rock, or suck!" and boy did he rock!!! They were having a little trouble with the sound at first, and then some trouble with the CD player, so he ended up playing Paradigm Shift about 3 times. I'm guessing he did the same thing that he has done in his other clinics, talk about math, play to some tracks, answer questions. Alot of the questions being asked really surprised me, like about the pattern in "Fortune of Lies" first of all, the guy thought it was something with paradiddles, and he couldn't figure out the pattern. Maybe I'm just being a jerk, but...hello!!! try listening to it more than once!!! It's not that hard. It was cool to see Mike play everything, though. His opening solo was probably the best one I've ever seen him done. I was also happy that I won a drum head and got him to autograph it!!!!! If your reading this, Mike, YOU ROCK!!

    Hey everybody!

I went to the drum clinic tonight at Guitar Center, and it was incredible to say the least.

I got there around 6:20 (40 minutes before it started). Already all the chairs were taken, but I was in the first standing row behind them all, which gave me a good taping position. I got it all on DAT, and it sounds really crisp and clean.

Brief highlights included: 1) Before Mike ever came out, they were, as you already know, playing some of the tracks from the live album. It sounded really cool except for the fact that the nimrods there had the CD player on top of a monitor, and it caused the songs to skip like a little kid. 2) Some guy asked him why he bangs his head during drum solos. =) 3) At the beginning there was an annoying buzz in the PA. Being the creative guy he is, he made a Buzz Jam. =) 4) He had to start Paradigm Shift three times. The first time he started, there was no music. The second time, the music was fixed, but a little while into it the CD started skipping. Showing his ability to compensate for live errors, he kept playing along with it until the CD started skipping so much it became pointless. The third time he played through the entire thing. "This is the last time I go to my hotel to skip sound check," was his response. 5) He stressed the importance of having melodic drumming, stuff that's memorable and just as identifiable as guitar parts, etc. For the first time in a few years he did a 20+ song montage of various famous drum beats to demonstrate that fact. 6) Some guy who obviously didn't really know Mike before the drum clinic called him Mark. =) 7) Summary highlight: This man's a genius.

Can't remember much else, I saw a few other Jammers there (Jason Skewes, Jan-Michael Souter), so they'll probably fill in the holes. Great meeting you, Jason! Also, it was cool seeing Jan-Michael again. =) I heard Glen Brooks being called up to receive a drawing prize, but I never actually saw him.

After I waited around an hour in the autograph line, I forgot the three questions I was going to ask him. That sucks, but it was cool talking to him about other things, though. =)

Nobody e-mail me about trades for this DAT just yet. I'm so busy it'd just about be impossible for me to ever get around it. In case anybody's interested in the future, I'll post a note to the Jam when the time comes. I also have the May Lubbock and San Antonio shows on DAT (the only known copies of those two shows), but it'll be awhile before I'm able to trade those as well. It'll all be available sometime.

Take care, everybody, Ryan Whitaker Scarred Records http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236

    > Okay, I'd like to add to this thread a sub-thread: Bass solos.

I don't know if it qualifies as a bass solo, but the crazy lead lines Stuart Hamm plays in Steve Vai's "Blue Powder" always give me goosebumps. (Let alone what he does in YYZ on Working Man.)

Sean Malone's solos in "Textures" by Cynic and "Red Barchetta" on Working Man. The stick solo in "Fisher's Gambit" also makes my day.

Laugh at me, but I really like Frank Bello's simple solo thing in the Joe Jackson cover "Got The Time", by Anthrax in 1990.

Plus any solo by Raul Vaigla, that guy goes really apeshit on his 6-string fretted and fretless basses, whatever the music style.

    Raitz, more of pointless rambling

You're being ripped off. Call the Guitar Center and complain. None of the clinics thus far have been charging admission, to the best of my knowledge. The one in Marietta didn't charge, that's for damn sure.
